Moonbases Setup

  1. Rotate the Start Player token and give it to the player at whose position the central middle tip of the letter M points.

  2. Remove all green cards with rivers on them, then separately shuffle the 4 bonus card decks and count out cards from each deck equal to the number of players to form 4 decks. Deal 1 deck to each player (in 2- and 3-player games some players may receive more than 1 deck). Each player chooses 1 card and passes the rest to the player on their left, until every player has 1 card from each deck.

  3. If fewer than 4 players are taking part, remove several passenger tokens:

    • 4 players: remove none.
    • 3 players: remove 3 passenger tokens of each color.
    • 2 players: remove 5 passenger tokens of each color.

Return the removed passengers to the box.

  4. Each player takes: 1 Train, 1 Moonbase station, 1 Moonbase extension, 18 Track tiles, 1 Player board, 1 Steel robot, 1 Gold robot, and 1 Copper robot. The 4th player receives 1 robot of any color.

  5. Place all 14 stations in their places at the bottom of the map and place 1 passenger of the matching color on each station.

  6. Place the remaining Steel, Gold and Copper robots in the cloth bag.

  7. Draw the starting robots from the bag and place them on the empty spaces of the stations, as shown on the board, including the half-hex spaces of the Moonbase stations in each of the 4 corners.

  8. Sort the remaining passengers next to the stations.

  9. In reverse order, before the first turn, each player places their Moonbase station on an empty space of a Moonbase station, and places a robot and their train on it. If there are fewer than 4 players, remove all robots from the unoccupied spaces of the Moonbase stations.

On your first turn: (heading printed above steps 10–11 on the sheet)

  1. Place your Moonbase extension on the Reverse action space on your player board.
  2. Place your starting robots on your player board.

Moonbases Rules

Move

  • Trains move 4 units or to the end of the line (whichever is shorter) for 1 action unit; you may not be able to stop at stations in the middle of your line.
  • Trains always stop at the end of your line. They do not turn around automatically during the action, unless you have passed all permitted moves.

Free Brakes

  • If the Free Brakes action is active, you may stop earlier than with normal movement.
  • Free Brakes do not require actions.

Free Reverse

  • The Free Reverse action may turn your train around while it is moving.
  • Free Reverse does not require actions.
  • Free Reverse can be used at the end of your line when otherwise you would have had to stop.

Moonbase

  • Each Moonbase station can hold up to 4 passengers.
  • Refill refills only your own Moonbase station, regardless of where your train is.
  • If you Refill when your Moonbase station is full, all 4 passengers go into the bag before you Pick Up new passengers.
  • You may connect your track to any Moonbase, regardless of player color, and pick up passengers there.

Double Station

  • 2 central stations become 1 double station with two colors.
  • To build the 2nd central station, you must have track connected to the 2nd empty station.
  • If a player has 3 or more tracks connected to the double station (because the station was built there after they built their track), they must reduce the number of these tracks to 2 connected to the double station before taking any other actions.

Example (caption on the sheet): Green can build a station here, creating a lilac-copper double station. Orange cannot build a station there, because the orange track does not connect to an empty space.

Game End

  • The game ends when at least 1 station of each of the 4 passenger colors has been built, and at the end of any player's turn the bag contains no passengers.
  • Finish the current round and play 1 more round.

Mars Setup

  1. Rotate the Start Player token and give it to the player at whose position the central middle tip of the letter M points.

  2. Remove the black bonus cards that depict Embassies or Studios, and place them in the box. Separately shuffle the 4 bonus card decks and count out cards from each deck equal to the number of players to form 4 decks.

  4. Each player takes: 1 Train, 1 Martian extension, 18 Track tiles, 1 Player board, 2 Steel robots, 2 Gold robots, and 2 Copper robots. The 4th player receives 1 robot of any color.

  5. Place the Factory, Lab and Warehouse at random on the 3 spaces of the starting station.

  6. Remove the Studio and Embassy stations and place them in the box.

  7. Place the remaining stations in their places on the left side of the map, and place 1 passenger of the matching color on each station.

  8. Place the remaining Steel, Gold and Copper robots in the cloth bag.

  9. Draw the starting robots from the bag and place 3 of them on Phobos, on Deimos, and on each station space that has 3 robots printed on it.

On your first turn: (heading printed above steps 11–13 on the sheet)

  1. Place your Train on one of the 3 starting stations.
  2. Place your starting robots on your player board.
  3. Place your Mars extension on the Reverse action space on your player board.
  4. On the central space of the "launch" station, nothing happens at the start of the game, although a station can be built there during play.

Mars Rules

Canyons

  • Track costs 1 additional unit of track per canyon in each hex with 1 or 2 canyons.
  • Caption on the sheet: Building hexes with yellow circles requires 3 units.
  • Canyons count as rivers for bonus cards.

Horizontal Transfer

  • Track wraps around the planet horizontally.
  • No additional units are needed for a transfer.

Caption on the sheet: Green paths connect the Factory with the Warehouse and the Office, and blue paths connect the Lab with the Factory.

Move Backwards

  • Your train never changes direction (except when returning from Phobos or Deimos).
  • The Move Backwards action moves the train backwards without turning it around.

Phobos and Deimos

  • Use Launch when you are on the central station to set off for Phobos or Deimos.
  • Use Launch when you are on Phobos or Deimos to return to the central station.
  • Position your train in any direction when you use the Launch action in reverse from Phobos or Deimos.
  • You do not need to unlock coral or purple passengers for the Launch action, but you do need to unlock them to take these passengers.
  • Put coral passengers in the bag when the first player arrives on Phobos, and put purple passengers in the bag when the first player arrives on Deimos.
  • Drop off coral passengers on Phobos.
  • Drop off purple passengers on Deimos.
  • You cannot Refill on Phobos or Deimos.

Game End

  • The game ends when the bag has previously been filled with passengers of all four colors, and at the end of any player's turn the bag contains no passengers.
  • Finish the current round and play 1 more round.
