Before the First Game
Please carefully remove all of the game material from the panels before starting the first game! You can throw away the remaining parts of the panels.
You can find information on inserting the batteries and other user and safety information in the booklet's battery and safety notes.
Game Setup
- Place the light forest board in the middle of the table and press the green button to turn it on. All of the lights will briefly flash.
- Give each player a player marker. Players place their markers in the center clearing in the labyrinth. This will be what players use to move around the forest.
Tip: On each of the side panels of the box base, you can see illustrated one of the heroic characters from Luxantis. If you select the player marker that matches the color of the box panel facing where you are sitting, it will help remind you which player marker is yours.
- Place the castle board off to one side.
- Shuffle the 36 shadow creature cards and deal 8 cards face down next to the castle game board. These will be the 8 creatures that you need to vanquish in order to win.
Note: If you want an easier game just play with the 1 and 2 symbol creature cards; for more difficult game play use the 3 and 4 symbol creature cards.
Take the top four cards from this pile and place them face up on the bottom row of the castle board. These are the first four creatures you will face.
- Have the die and tree tiles ready.
The control panel buttons are: red ghost lights button, on/off button, black vortex button and blue fireflies button.
How to Play
Look closely at the one to four magic objects depicted on each of the four face up shadow creature cards. Examine the light forest closely to locate the magic objects. Discuss and agree amongst each other which player will head toward which object, which order makes sense, and which paths can be connected. The goal is to locate each magic object depicted on the creature cards and cover them with round tree tiles. Once a creature has all of their objects covered, then this creature has been successfully vanquished! He will not make it to the castle and is knocked out of the game.
Press the black button at the start of the round! The Black Vortex will randomize the light forest. So make sure you press it at the start of a new game. Once pressed it will show you which sections of the forest will be risky to venture into (red light spaces) and which sections will be safe (blue light spaces). As soon as the lights in the forest go out, the journey can begin.
Play in a clockwise direction. The bravest player is the starting player.
A turn always consists of two actions: A - move the play figure and B - roll the die.
Action A - Move the Play Figure
You may:
- decide on which side you will exit the clearing.
- move your play figure up to 5 path spaces during your turn.
- move vertically and horizontally from path space to path space.
- No diagonal movement is allowed.
- Not move over hedges and walls.
- Only move on open path spaces. You cannot move onto or jump over other players' figures.
Green = permitted movement. Red = forbidden movement.
Magic Objects
In order to be able to use a magic object in the fight against the shadow creatures (more about this on page 11), you have to end your turn with your play figure on the corresponding path space.
But you may also leave magic objects unused by moving past them.
Nothing can happen to you if you and your play figure are on a space with a magic object. You are safe here regardless of which color the surrounding spaces light up as and whether or not you need the magic object.
Action B - Roll the Die
After you have moved your figure, you still have to roll the die. What does the die show?
Red Ghost Lights
Now it's getting risky. Has someone led you astray?
- Press the red button: The red ghost lights mark the dangerous areas in the forest.
- All the players who are on a path space that lights up red now have to place their play figure back in the clearing and start again from there during their next turn. All other play figures can stay where they are.
Blue Fireflies
You're lucky! The blue fireflies show you the safe path through the forest.
- Press the blue button: All safe areas briefly light up blue. Remember them well so that you know which path may be safely traversed to the magic objects.
- All the players who are on a path space that lights up blue have the option to move their play figure exactly one path space.
- If a player thereby reaches a magic object, they can use it to fight the shadow creatures (see below).
Black Vortex
Watch out! The fireflies and all of the ghost lights are changing their positions!
- Press the black button: The red ghost lights and the safe blue fireflies light up now on completely different path spaces. Try to remember these new positions well.
- If a play figure is on a space that now lights up red, the player unfortunately is out of luck. The player must place their play figure back in the clearing.
- When the red ghost lights flash, you only have a few seconds to remember them. The lights go out again after that.
Shadow Creatures
Oh dear, a shadow creature is heading toward the castle.
- Think together about which shadow creature you will move forward one space. Move the card for this creature one open space further in the direction of the arrow on the game board.
Remember: If any one shadow creature reaches the castle, you will have all lost together.
Important: You have to immediately fill in the gaps in the lowest row on the game board with the cards from the draw pile until the draw pile is empty.
Then the next player takes their turn.
Beware: In the later course of the game! No gap may result between two shadow creatures in a column. The lowest creatures always move up.
How to Fight the Shadow Creatures
If a player ends their turn with their play figure on a space with a magic object, check whether one or more of the face-up shadow creature cards shows this object.
- No? Too bad, this object won't help you just now and nothing happens.
- Yes? Fantastic! You can use the magic object in the fight against the shadow creatures. Cover the object on each face-up shadow creature card with a tree tile.
As soon as all the objects are covered on a card, this creature is vanquished and disappears. Remove all the tree tiles from this card and place them back in the stockpile. Remove the shadow creature card from the game board and place it aside.
The card "gap" rule on the castle tower board also applies here. Players must immediately fill in the gaps that result on the lowest row with the cards from the draw pile. Gaps between two shadow creatures in a column will be closed by moving up the lower creatures. Gap fill-in continues until the stockpile is gone.
If magic objects are located on a card drawn from the draw pile and your play figures are on their corresponding path spaces, you may immediately cover the objects on this card as well.
Sample Move
In order to make the mushroom goblin (lower right) disappear, you need the magic chalice.
It's Paul's turn, and he first moves his play figure 4 steps (he skips the 5th step) and reaches the path space with the chalice.
He covers the chalice symbol on the mushroom goblin card with a tree tile. The chalice can also still be seen on another shadow creature card. It may be covered there as well.
The mushroom goblin has been successfully fended off, since all the objects on the card have been covered. Both tree tiles go back in the stockpile, and the card is removed from the game. Since a gap has resulted in the lowest row, the next card on the draw pile is turned over and placed on the open space.
The chalice can also be seen here. Paul may cover it immediately because his play figure is on the chalice space.
Paul then must roll the die. Unfortunately, he rolls the shadow creature symbol and decides to move the log monster forward. The creature below it likewise moves up, since there may not be any gap between the two creatures. Because the draw pile is empty, Paul does not have to fill in the gap in the lowest row.
It's now Kaia's turn, and she moves her play figure...
End of the Game
If you manage vanquish all eight shadow creatures before one of them reaches the castle, you have all won together. Congratulations! You are the heroes of Luxantis!
If one of the shadow creatures reaches the castle, you have unfortunately all lost together. This happens when you roll the shadow creature and a shadow creature has to be moved forward from the uppermost, fourth row. Why don't you try again? Good luck next time!
Important! After the game: Press the green button to turn off the game board again and save the batteries.
Playing Tips
- Agree on who will go to which magic object.
- Look closely at which magic object you need most urgently.
- Always think together about which shadow creature you will move forward. You should preferably move forward weak shadow creatures (with few visible objects), which you can quickly vanquish, or those that are a long way from the castle.
- When pressing the buttons on the control panel, note that the lights must be off before you can press a new button and initiate a new action.
- The degree of difficulty can be individually adjusted. If you want to make the game easier (especially if only two of you are playing), shuffle shadow creature cards that only have one or two objects. Use eight cards from these to fight against.
- To make the game more difficult, use only the shadow creature cards with three or four magic objects. You can also have the shadow creatures start one row higher on the game board; they then have a shorter path, and it will be more menacing for you.
