Mini Expansion: The Abbess

Setup

At the start of the game, place the Abbess figure in the Meditation Room, next to the Time tokens.

Abbess Placement

In each round, the first player who places a Novice in the Temple also places the Abbess on one of the corner spaces adjacent to their Novice. This corner must be adjacent to 3 Temple areas, so it is not permitted to place the Abbess on the edge of the Temple.

Scoring

At the end of the round, all Novices adjacent to the Abbess gain 1 additional influence point.

Mini Expansion: The Preacher

Setup

At the start of the game, each player receives 1 additional Novice figure, the «Preacher». Note that it is larger than the normal Novice figures.

Recruiting Preachers

Preachers enter the game with a normal Recruit action, and have these abilities:

  • When you take actions where the number of Novices is relevant, you may count your Preacher as either 1 or 2 Novices, your choice each time.
    • Example: The Preacher can Recruit one Novice or «Build a Shrine» on its own; move up 2 spaces on the Council of Priests; and, when traveling by Sailboat or using Herbs, it counts as 1 Novice.
  • When you take a «Promotion», «Sanctification» or «Sneak In» action with a Preacher, you may take the action as if you had spent 1 Bribery Favor token.
  • After entering a Temple, the Preacher is considered a «normal» Novice. It can be expelled, and at the end of the round you receive 1 point for it, as for any other Novice.

In other words: you may decide for each action whether the Preacher counts as 1 or 2 Novices. In the Temple, the Preacher ignores the position of the Guard.

Changes to the Original Rules

Bribery Favor Token (Additional Rules)

Sneak In: After being displaced, Novices may enter the Temple again. A Novice that has been displaced from the Temple and is waiting on the Landing stage may play a Bribery Favor token to sneak back into the Temple. It may enter any empty Temple tile, but it may not displace other Novices, and it does not gain any influence points for entering the Temple.

Book of Wisdom Favor Token (Replaces the Original Rules)

Return a Book of Wisdom Favor token to displace a Book of Wisdom in the Temple. Take a Book of Wisdom of your choice from an upright Novice and place it under one of your own Novices that has no book. Lay the Novice down on the book: you may not displace a book under a Novice that is lying down. At the end of a round, when preparing for the next round, stand all Novices up again. You no longer receive 1 point for placing the book, but you do receive 1 point for each book that has one of your Novices on it at the end of the round (regardless of the number of players).

Sidebar on the sheet, next to this section: «Your novices gain knowledge and influence by studying the Book of Wisdom.»

Advantages of a Book of Wisdom: A Novice cannot be displaced as long as it is on top of a book; and in the Scoring phase you gain 1 influence point for each Novice on a Book of Wisdom.
