Object

In the Land of Ooo lies the Candy Kingdom, ruled by the much admired Princess Bubblegum (PB).

PB is a radical dame with a passion for science. She thinks dating would donk up her research but her subjects think she's working too hard in her lab and needs to go out and socialize.

This is where you come in. You are a suitor trying to get Princess Bubblegum out of her lab and into the world.

Are you righteous, not wrong-teous? Do you have the goods to win the heart of Princess Bubblegum?

Components

Your game of Love Letter™: Adventure Time™ Edition includes the following*:

  • 16 Game Cards
  • 4 Reference Cards
  • 13 Tokens of Affection

*If this game is missing any components, please contact [email protected] for assistance.

Game Cards

The game has 16 cards. Each card represents a character from the Land of Ooo.

Each card has a value in the upper left corner—the higher the number, the closer that character is to Princess Bubblegum. At the bottom of each card, a text box describes the effect when the card is discarded.

Setup

Shuffle the 16 cards to form a face-down draw deck. Remove the top card of the deck from the game without looking at it and set it aside.

In a two-player game, take three more cards from the top of the deck and place them to the side, face up. They will not be used during this round.

Each player draws one card from the deck. This is the player's hand, and is kept secret from the others.

Whoever most recently watched an episode of Adventure Time™ goes first. Alternatively, the youngest player may go first.

How to Play

Love Letter™: Adventure Time™ is played in a series of rounds. Each round represents one day. At the end of each round, one player's letter reaches Princess Bubblegum and she reads it. When she reads enough letters from one suitor, she allows that suitor to take her on a date!

Taking a Turn

On your turn, draw the top card from the deck and add it to your hand. Then choose one of the two cards in your hand and discard it face up in front of you. Apply any effect on the card you discarded. You must apply its effect, even if it is bad for you. See The Cards section for the effects of each individual card. Likewise, if you have any questions about special cases regarding the card, you'll find the answer there.

All discarded cards remain in front of the player who discarded them. Overlap the cards so that it's clear in which order they were discarded. This helps players figure out which cards other players might be holding.

Once you finish applying the card's effect, the turn passes to the player on your left.

Out of the Round

If a player is knocked out of the round, that player discards the card in his or her hand face up (do not apply the card's effect) and takes no more turns until next round.

Honesty

A player could cheat (but should not) when chosen with "Guard", or fail to discard the "Lady" when that player has the "Wizard" or "Hero" in hand. We say, "No! No! Go sit in the corner, and think about your life." Or just don't play with people who cheat!

End of a Round

A round ends if the deck is empty at the end of a turn. Night falls on the Candy Castle. The person closest to Princess Bubblegum delivers the love letter, and she goes to her room to read it.

All players still in the round reveal their hands. The player with the highest ranked card wins the round. In case of a tie, the player who discarded the highest total value of cards wins.

A round also ends if all players but one are out of the round, in which case the remaining player wins.

The winner receives a Token of Affection. Retrieve any cards removed from the game. Shuffle all 16 cards together, and play a new round following all of the setup rules.

The winner of the previous round goes first.

Winning

A player wins the game after winning a number of Tokens of Affection based on the number of players:

  • 2 Players: 7 tokens
  • 3 Players: 5 tokens
  • 4 Players: 4 tokens

The Cards

Here are brief profiles of the cards in the game.

NOTES: By the value, there is a small series of pips that represent how many copies of that particular card type are in the deck.

Whenever a player guesses or names a card, always use the card title and not the character name. For example: You would guess, "HERO" if you think another player is holding Finn or Jake. If they are holding either Finn OR Jake, your guess would be correct!

8: Princess — Princess Bubblegum

As a millionaire nerd enthusiast, Princess Bubblegum immerses herself in every branch of geekdom from rocket science to turtle farming.

If you discard the "Princess" card—no matter how or why—she puts your letter over the flame of a bunsen burner and you are out of the round.

7: Lady — Lady Rainicorn

Lady Rainicorn is Princess Bubblegum's loyal and majestic steed and close friend. Her love of the viola makes her a perfect match for Jake.

Unlike other cards, which take effect when discarded, the text on the "Lady" card applies while it is in your hand. In fact, it has no effect when you discard it.

If you ever have the "Lady" card and either "Wizard" (Ice King) or "Hero" (Finn or Jake) in your hand, you must discard the "Lady" card. You do not have to reveal the other card in your hand. Of course, you can also discard the "Lady" card even if you do not have one of the two named cards in your hand.

6: Wizard — Ice King

Armed with a magic crown and an icy heart, the Ice King has only one goal: to secure a wife by any means necessary.

When discarded, trade the card in your hand with the card held by another player of your choice. You cannot trade with a player who is out of the round, or with someone protected by a "Companion" (BMO and Gunter) card. If a "Companion" card protects all other players still in the round, this card does nothing when discarded.

5: Hero — Finn and Jake (one card each)

Finn is a silly kid who wants to become a great hero one day. He might not look too tough, but if there's evil around, he'll slay it. That's his deal. Jake is Finn's best friend. He is a wise, old dog with a big heart. Jake has the magical ability to stretch and grow.

When you discard a "Hero" card, choose one player still in the round (including yourself). That player discards his or her hand (do not apply the card's effect, except in the case of the "Princess") and draws a new card. If the deck is empty, that player draws the card that was removed at the start of the round. If a "Companion" (BMO and Gunter) card protects all other players, you must choose yourself.

SUPER IMPORTANT NOTE: If a player plays Jake, and Finn is discarded by the effect—or vice versa—that player wins the round and a Token of Affection! It's great to get best buddies together!

4: Companion — BMO and Gunter (one card each)

BMO is much more than just Finn and Jake's roommate. BMO is also their friend, camera, alarm clock and video game system. Gunter is the Ice King's companion and personal servant.

When discarded, you are immune to the effects of other players' cards until the start of your next turn.

If a "Companion" card protects all players other than the player whose turn it is, the player must choose him or herself if possible.

SUPER IMPORTANT NOTE: If you win the round by having a "Companion" card in your hand, you gain an additional Token.

3: Gossip — Lumpy Space Princess and Marceline (one card each)

Lumpy Space Princess comes from the cloud-like kingdom of Lumpy Space. She acts like a typical spoiled teenager. Marceline is a wild rocker girl. Centuries of wandering the Land of Ooo have made her a fearless daredevil.

When discarded, choose one other player still in the round. You and that player secretly compare your hands. The player with the lower rank is knocked out of the round. In case of a tie, nothing happens. If a "Companion" card protects all other players still in the round, this card does nothing.

2: Royal Subject — Peppermint Butler and Earl of Lemongrab (one card each)

Peppermint Butler is the loyal butler to Princess Bubblegum. He has a mysterious past and an unidentified relationship with Death. The Earl of Lemongrab is the high-strung, stubborn heir to the Candy Kingdom. He was the first of Princess Bubblegum's experiments gone wrong.

When discarded, you can look at one other player's hand. Don't reveal the hand to any other players (this includes, but is not limited, to providing a thinly-veiled series of clues).

1: Guard — Banana Guard (five cards)

Banana Guards are Candy People who guard and protect Princess Bubblegum and the Candy Kingdom.

When you discard Banana Guard, choose a player and name a card (other than "Guard"). If that player has that card, that player is knocked out of the round. If a "Companion" card protects all other players still in the round, this card does nothing.
