Setup: The Wastes of Eriador Nightmare

You are playing Nightmare mode.

"As the light grew stronger it showed a silent shrouded world. Below their refuge were white humps and domes and shapeless deeps beneath which the path that they had trodden was altogether lost..." –The Fellowship of the Rings

Begin with the standard quest deck and encounter deck for The Wastes of Eriador scenario.

Remove the following cards, in the specified quantities, from the standard encounter deck:

2x Northern Warg 1x White Warg 1x Sudden Darkness 1x North Downs 2x Eriador Wastes 1x Cold from Angmar 3x Biting Wind 1x Freezing Blast 1x Shrouded Hills 3x Rugged Country 2x Pressing Needs

Then, shuffle the encounter cards in this Nightmare Deck into the remainder of the standard The Wasts of Eriador encounter deck.

Finally, flip this setup card over and place it next to the quest deck. Its effect remains active throughout the game, which is now ready to begin.

Encounter Cards

The Nightmare Deck contains 19 encounter cards, shuffled into the standard encounter deck of The Wastes of Eriador scenario as set out in the setup text above. Each entry gives the card's set number and copies as printed on the Hall of Beorn database (for example "#2 (x5)" is set number 2, five copies), its type, any keyword, its printed stats, and its traits.

Stats are given with the labels the Hall of Beorn card page shows (Threat, Attack, Defense, Hit Points) where it gives them. The bracketed number on each enemy, location and side quest is unlabelled on the database page and is kept in brackets as printed.

Pack Hunters

#2 (x5) · Enemy · Stat line as printed: (45) · Threat 3 · Attack 2 · Defense 1 · Hit Points 3 · Traits: Creature. Warg.

While it is Night Pack Hunters gets -30 engagement cost.

Forced: When you engage Pack Hunters, search the top 5 cards of the encounter deck for a Warg enemy, and put it into play engaged with you (top 10 cards instead if it is Night). Shuffle the encounter deck.

Snowy Badlands

#4 (x3) · Location · Stat line as printed: Threat 3 · (5) · Traits: Arnor. Hills.

While Snowy Badlands is in the staging area, each enemy in the staging area cannot take damage.

Travel: Each player deals 1 damage to an exhausted character he controls to travel here (2 damage instead if it is Night).

Shrouded Wilderness

#3 (x3) · Location · Stat line as printed: Threat 6 · (4) · Traits: Arnor.

While it is Night progress cannot be placed on Shrouded Wilderness.

Travel: Flip the Time objective from Daybreak to Nightfall.

Shadow: Attacking enemy gets +1. Then, if it is Night deal attacking enemy another shadow card.

Cunning Wolves

#5 (x3) · Treachery · Stat line: none.

When Revealed: Attach to the current quest. (Counts as a Condition attachment with the text: "Attached quest gets +3 quest points. Each Warg enemy cannot be optionally engaged.")

Shadow: If it is Night deal attacking enemy 2 additional shadow cards.

Torrent of Hail

#6 (x3) · Treachery · Stat line: none.

When Revealed: Deal 1 damage to each questing character. If it is Night discard an attachment from each character damaged by this effect.

Shadow: Discard 1 attachment you control (2 attachments instead if it is Night).

Make a Stand

#7 (x1) · Encounter Side Quest · Stat line as printed: (-) · Victory 10.

When Revealed: If it is a Day, flip the Time objective to Nightfall, The Time objective cannot flip to Daybreak.

Response: After an enemy is defeated, place 1 resource token on Make a Stand. Then, if there are 2 resource tokens per player on Make a Stand, or if there are no enemies in play, add Make a Stand to the victory display.

Forced Off Track

#8 (x1) · Encounter Side Quest · Keyword: Surge. Stat line as printed: (8) · Victory 10.

Forced: At the end of the round, remove X progress from the main quest, where X is the number of Warg enemies in play.

Response: When this quest is defeated, discard a non-unique Warg enemy in the staging area.

Transcription Notes

The following corrections and judgement calls were made against the source text. Each is either a fix of an obvious database or typing error, or a point where the source is unclear and is shown as such. None adds a rule.

  • Sources checked. The setup card and each encounter card were read from its Hall of Beorn card-detail page. The stat labels on Pack Hunters (Threat, Attack, Defense, Hit Points) come from the labels the page attaches to its icons. No card was checked against a card scan.
  • Quest card not transcribed. The product listing names "Quest Cards 1", but that quest card is not in the Hall of Beorn card list. No text was available, so it is not reproduced and was not reconstructed.
  • "The Wasts of Eriador". The setup text on the source reads "The Wasts of Eriador encounter deck". It is kept as printed; the scenario is The Wastes of Eriador.
  • Make a Stand. The When Revealed text has a comma where a full stop is meant ("flip the Time objective to Nightfall, The Time objective cannot flip to Daybreak."). It is kept as printed.
  • Shrouded Wilderness. The Shadow text is printed as two lines, "Attacking enemy gets +1" and "Then, if it is Night deal attacking enemy another shadow card." Here they are joined into one paragraph with a full stop after "+1".
  • Cunning Wolves and Torrent of Hail. Neither card prints a stat line, so none is given.
  • Icons as words. Threat, attack, defense and hit point icons are written as the words "Threat", "Attack", "Defense" and "Hit Points" in stat lines. Attachments, resources and the Time objective are named in words as printed.
  • Stat lines. The bracketed number on Snowy Badlands, Shrouded Wilderness, Make a Stand and Forced Off Track is unlabelled on the database page and is kept as printed, including "(-)" on Make a Stand.
  • Flavour quotation on the setup card is kept as printed, with its attribution.
  • Setup text is kept as printed, including "Its effect remains active" and the removal list.
