Setup: The Three Trials Nightmare

Stage A

You are playing Nightmare mode.

Each engaged Guardian enemy contributes its Threat to the total Threat in the staging area.

While the Trial of Intuition is the current trial, each Guardian enemy cannot be damaged, and each Barrow location cannot be the active location and is immune to player card effects.

Stage B

Begin with the standard quest deck and encounter deck for The Three Trials scenario.

Remove the following cards, in the specified quantities, from the standard encounter deck:

3x Spirit of the Wild 3x Grim Foothills 1x Tangled Woods 3x Turned Around

Then, shuffle the encounter cards in this Nightmare Deck into the remainder of the standard The Three Trials encounter deck.

Finally, flip this setup card over and place it next to the quest deck. Its effects remain active throughout the game, which is now ready to begin.

Transcription Notes

The following corrections and judgment calls were made against the source text. Each is a fix of an obvious database artifact or a presentation choice, not a change to the rules.

  • The "Quest Cards 1" row on the product page has no card entry in the Hall of Beorn card list, so that card's text is not in this file. It is probably the setup card's quest side or a non-rules card, but this was not verified. The card should be checked against the physical product before this gap is closed.
  • The source's stat lines (Threat, Attack, Defense, Hit Points) are reproduced as printed, with the stat labels kept from the source.
  • The source writes stat modifiers in bracketed icon form, such as "+1 [Attack]". The icon is rendered as the word, "+1 Attack".
  • The source's Sacred Forest text has no space after "gains:". It is kept as printed, with a space added before the opening quotation mark.
  • Each encounter card's quantity from the source is shown as "×N" after its name. The product page lists 19 encounter cards in total, which matches the 19 copies reproduced here (3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 3 + 2).
  • The Setup card's flavour quotation (Gandalf, The Two Towers) and the source's attribution are left out.
  • Setup Stage B's removal list is reproduced exactly as the source gives it.
