Nightmare Mode
You are playing Nightmare mode.
Forced: When the 'when revealed' effect on stage 2B resolves, also search the encounter deck and discard pile for each copy of Umbar Bridge and each copy of Inspiring Fury and shuffle them into the second encounter deck.
Forced: When the 'when revealed' effect on stage 3A resolves, also search the encounter deck for The Cursed Sword and attach it to the set-aside Captain Sahír.
Setup: The City of Corsairs Nightmare
Begin with the standard quest deck and encounter deck for The City of Corsairs scenario.
Remove the following cards, in the specified quantities, from the standard encounter deck:
2x Corsair Infiltrator 2x Fog Bank 2x Starlit Sea 2x Scouting Ship 2x Serpent's Tail 1x Streets of Umbar
During setup, players are instructed to set The City of Corsairs encounter set aside, out of play. After doing so, shuffle the encounter cards in this Nightmare Deck that have The City of Corsairs encounter set icon into the set aside The City of Corsairs encounter set. Then, use the encounter cards in this Nightmare Deck that have the Coast of Umbar encounter set icon to build the standard encounter deck and Corsair deck.
Finally, flip this setup card over and place it next to the quest deck. Its effect remains active throughout the game, which is now ready to begin.
Sailing symbol note: Some cards in The City of Corsairs Nightmare Deck have Sailing success symbols (Wheel) with an asterisk (*) next to them. This indicates that the card has a Forced effect which will trigger when the card is discarded during a Sailing test.
Encounter Cards
The Nightmare Deck contains 19 encounter cards, shuffled into the standard encounter deck of The City of Corsairs scenario as set out in the setup text above. Each entry gives the card's set number and copies as printed on the Hall of Beorn database (for example "#2 (x2)" is set number 2, two copies), its type, any keyword, its printed stats, and its traits.
Stats are given with the labels the Hall of Beorn card page shows (Threat, Attack, Defense, Hit Points) where it gives them. The engagement cost of each enemy is the large number at the top of the card; the database does not print it, so it is read from the card scan. The bracketed number on each location is unlabelled on the database page and on the card scan, and is kept in brackets as printed. The number in brackets is not one of the labelled stats.
Patrol Ship
#2 (x2) · Enemy · Engagement cost 41 (from scan) · Threat 2 · Attack 5 · Defense 2 · Hit Points 7 · Traits: Corsair. Ship.
Boarding 2.
Forced: After you shift your heading on-course, Patrol Ship gets -40 engagement cost this round.
*Forced: After Patrol Ship is discarded from the encounter deck during a Sailing test, cancel all Wheel symbols found unless you add it to the staging area.
Corsair Loyalist
#3 (x2) · Enemy · Engagement cost 28 (from scan) · Threat 4 · Attack 4 · Defense 2 · Hit Points 4 · Traits: Corsair. Raider.
While Corsair Loyalist has 4 or more resources on it, its attacks are considered to be undefended.
Shadow: If attacking enemy is a Raider, either add 2 resources to attacking enemy, or attacking enemy makes an additional attack after this one.
Walls of Umbar
#4 (x2) · Location · Stat line as printed: Threat 5 · (4) · Traits: Ocean. Coastland.
While Walls of Umbar is in the staging area, it gains: "Forced: After a player commits an ally to a Sailing test, raise his or her threat by 1."
*Forced: After Walls of Umbar is discarded from the encounter deck during a Sailing test, raise each player's threat by 1 for each ally he or she committed to that test.
Umbar Bridge
#5 (x2) · Location · Stat line as printed: Threat 3 · (6) · Traits: Umbar. Coastland.
While Umbar Bridge is in the staging area, cancel the first X progress that would be placed on the current quest each round, where X is the highest number of resources on a Raider enemy in play.
Travel: Reduce the engagement cost of each Corsair enemy to 0 until the end of the round.
Inspiring Fury
#6 (x2) · Treachery · Keyword: Surge · Stat line: none.
When Revealed: Deal Inspiring Fury to the enemy with the highest [crossed-swords icon], as a shadow card.
Shadow: Shuffle the encounter discard pile into the encounter deck and deal attacking enemy 3 additional shadow cards. During this attack, shadow effects cannot be canceled.
The Cursed Sword
#7 (x1) · Objective · Stat line: none · Traits: Artifact. Item. Cursed.
Cannot be discarded by player card effects.
The Cursed Sword counts as a Weapon attachment with the text: "Forced: After Captain Sahír attacks and deals excess damage, assign that excess damage to Captain Sahír as resources. (Limit once per round.)"
Umbar Patrol
#8 (x3) · Enemy · Engagement cost 48 (from scan) · Threat 3 · Attack 3 · Defense 4 · Hit Points 6 · Traits: Corsair.
Forced: At the end of the encounter phase, if Umbar Patrol is in the staging area, add 2 resources to the Raider enemy with the most resources on it.
Shadow: Add 1 resource to each Raider enemy engaged with you.
Raise the Alarm!
#9 (x2) · Treachery · Stat line: none.
When Revealed: Discard cards from the top of the encounter deck until a Raider enemy is discarded. Add that enemy to the staging area and place 3 resources on it.
Shadow: If attacking enemy is a Raider after this attack ends, add 1 resource to attacking enemy for each damage dealt by this attack.
Slave Trade
#10 (x3) · Treachery · Stat line: none.
When Revealed: Each player deals 2 damage to an ally he or she controls. For each ally destroyed by this effect, place resources on a Raider enemy in play equal to that ally's resource cost.
Shadow: Discard an attachment you control. If attacking enemy is a Raider add resources to it equal to that attachment's printed cost.
Transcription Notes
The following corrections and judgement calls were made against the source text. Each is either a fix of an obvious database or typing error, or a point where the source is unclear and is shown as such. None adds a rule.
- Missing quest card. The product listing gives "Quest Cards 1" and "TOTAL CARDS 20", which is the setup card, the 19 encounter cards and one quest card. The Hall of Beorn database lists neither a quest card nor a card-detail page for one, and the source does not give its text. No quest card is transcribed here, and none has been reconstructed. The one-card gap is unresolved and should be checked against a complete card list or a scan of the quest card.
- Setup card typos. The Hall of Beorn page prints "discard pule", "placr" and "to being". The card scan reads "discard pile", "place" and "to begin", so the scan wording is used.
- Enemy engagement costs. The database does not print enemy engagement costs. They are the large numbers at the top of each enemy scan: Patrol Ship 41, Corsair Loyalist 28, Umbar Patrol 48.
- Inspiring Fury icon. The database text drops the icon after "highest". The scan shows a crossed-swords icon, the Attack icon, and the card is transcribed with that icon named in brackets.
- The Cursed Sword type. The database page reads the type as "Cel". The card scan shows Objective, which is used here. The database's Polish-language trait labels (Artefakt, Przedmiot) are replaced with the scan's English traits: Artifact, Item, Cursed.
- Umbar Bridge and Walls of Umbar brackets. The bracketed numbers (6 and 4) are unlabelled on both the database page and the scan. They are kept in brackets as printed.
- Sources checked. Each encounter card was read from its Hall of Beorn card-detail page and compared with its full-size scan. The setup card was read from both sides of its scan.
