Objective
Be the first to reach 10 lives on your character sheet. Only then can you be resurrected and become the loyal servant of the Dark Mage. Once you have gathered the first 6 lives you can no longer lose them, as they are secured; however, until you reach 10, you have not won!
Setup
- Separate the 3 types of card backs from the large card pack (action, word and interruption). Shuffle them separately and place them face down in the centre of the table.
- Each player starts with 3 cards, one from each deck. Each player also places their character sheet in front of them, with a token on life number 1.
The starting player may be chosen at random. We recommend that the player with the most corpse-like face begins.
Game Mechanics
Turns proceed clockwise and work as follows:
- Upkeep (Mantenimiento): Draw cards until you have four. You may draw from whichever deck you wish, depending on your strategy. You must have at least one action or word card to use on your turn. If, when drawing, you do not see a clear play, you may pass your turn by discarding your hand and drawing one card from each deck.
- Action: Use an action card or a word card. If it is an action card, resolve its effect. If it is a word card, place it face up in front of you, forbidding the other players from saying that word. If you catch someone saying it, you automatically gain one life. You may not have more than 3 words in use. At the end of your turn, 3 cards must remain in your hand.
Card Types
Cards marked with * belong to the expansion and are therefore optional.
Action Deck (Mazo de acción)
Action cards may only be used on your turn.
- Gain life (Ganar vida): Add one life directly to your character sheet.
- *Giant Heart (Corazón Gigante): Add two lives to your character sheet.
- Transfer life (Transferir vida): Transfer one life between two opponents: remove it from one and give it to the other.
- Steal life (Robar vida): Add one life to your character sheet and subtract it from the opponent of your choice. If nobody has a life to subtract, simply add it to yours.
- Eliminate life (Eliminar vida): Eliminate one life from an opponent. If nobody has any lives, you may use it as "gift life" (regalar vida).
- Gift life (Regalar vida): Choose an opponent and add one life to their counter. You do not have to subtract it from anyone.
- *Eye for an eye (Ojo x ojo): You lose one life and eliminate one life from an opponent.
- Body swap (Cambio de cuerpo): Place your hand face down on the table, stand up and take the place of an opponent. That opponent will in turn take your place, and the turn continues from where it had left off.
Interruption Deck (Mazo de interrupción)
Use interruption cards whenever you least want to during your turn.
- Revenge (Venganza): Discard the hand of an opponent at any moment. That player draws one card from each deck and the turn continues from where it had left off.
- Instant free life (Vida gratuita instantánea): Gain one life during an opponent's turn.
- Plan ahead (Planificar): If you lose a life, draw a maximum of two cards. Remember not to have more than 3 in total.
- Eternal rest (Descanso eterno): If you have just lost a life, recover it.
- Mazazo: Prevent an opponent from drawing cards.
- Necrographic error (Error muertográfico): You may swap one word in play for another.
- *Lightning (Relámpago): Play any card in your hand as an instant. The card played does not change category.
- *Empty coffin (Féretro Vacío): Prevent a body swap that is being carried out.
- I remember now (Ya me acuerdo) (interruption): Discard one word in play.
- Deadly mirror (Espejo mortal) (interruption): Enchant the word of your choice. If its carrier pronounces that word, they lose one life; the other players may still say it. The enchantment cannot be discarded; only the enchanted word can be.
Layout note: the printed list continues at the top of page 3 without a repeated heading. The transcriber has grouped those items under the Interruption deck because they directly follow Revenge; only some of them carry an explicit "(interruption)" label in the print.
Word Deck (Mazo de palabra)
Play word cards on your turn. You may have a maximum of 3 words per player. You may play word cards on your opponents to occupy their slots, forcing them to spend their turns eliminating those words if they want to use better ones in their place.
- *Unforgettable memories (Recuerdos imborrables): An enchanted word cannot be discarded unless this card is discarded first.
- *Tribe chief (Jefe de la tribu): Whoever holds it must speak exclusively in the infinitive, that is, like an "Indio". Otherwise, each of the other players gains one life.
- *Deadly mirror (Espejo Mortal) (word): Play it on your turn, enchanting the word in play of your choice. From that moment, if its carrier says that word, the other players each gain one life. The other players may still say it.
- I remember now (Ya me acuerdo) (word): Discard a word in play, whether it is yours or an opponent's.
- Blank card (Carta en Blanco): Let your imagination run free: invent a word, draw it and enjoy gaining lives at the expense of your friends.
Silence rule: if you see that the other players are very quiet, you may ask them questions, since they will be obliged to answer by speaking. Answering with gestures or speaking in other languages is not permitted; otherwise, that player loses one life by popular acclaim. Let no one get comfortable in their silence!
Extra Notes
- The card categories are: Action, Interruption and Word.
- Words in play may be swapped while they are of the same type (words or enchantments). If a word is enchanted, the attached enchantments go with it.
- The maximum number of enchantments per word is ONE. A Deadly Mirror of the Word category may be enchanted like any other word.
- Deadly Mirrors and Unforgettable Memories cannot be swapped. If their original word is swapped, they remain attached to it.
