Before the First Game

Prepare the die by placing a sticker on each of its six sides; then it is ready to be used in the game!

Preparation

Turn all the cards with the flower picture sides facing up. Each child chooses a flower color and takes the set of 4 cards in that color. Any extra cards go back into the box.

Stack your cards on top of each other with the smallest one on top. The pictured flowers should be placed so that the flowers appear at the lower edge. So begin with the largest card, then the next smaller card, etc. The top card shows an egg about to break open.

Place the feed dishes in the middle of the table and keep the die handy.

How to Play

All players should first turn over their top, smallest card; this allows your chick to start to hatch from the egg. Now a little chick can be seen by each child. The chick looks out chirpily and curiously from the egg that he/she just broke open. Immediately the little chicks are hungry and would really enjoy being fed. The feed symbols on your emerging meadow will show you what the chick would like to eat.

Play in a clockwise direction. Whoever has the biggest hunger begins and rolls the die.

What Does the Die Show?

One feed symbol (worm, fly, berries, or seeds):

All the children look to see whether the corresponding feed symbol is pictured on their meadow, that is, whether their chick would like to eat the corresponding feed.

  • Yes. Great! These children may take one matching feed dish from the middle. Cover the feed symbol on your meadow with the feed dish.
  • No. Too bad! If children do not have the feed symbol rolled on their meadow then unfortunately this player cannot take a feed dish.

Two feed symbols (worm, fly, berries, or seeds):

All of the children look to see whether one or both of the feed symbols rolled on the die are pictured on their meadow.

  • Yes. Great! These children may take one matching feed dish from the middle. Cover the matching feed symbol on your meadow with the feed dish.
  • No. Too bad! If children have neither of the two symbols rolled on the die on their meadow then unfortunately they cannot take a feed dish.

Note: You always collect only one dish for each symbol pictured on the meadow.

Then the next child takes their turn with the die.

Growing the Chick

Your chick is full when you have collected all the feed dishes for it. Place all the dishes from your meadow back into the middle. Turn the card over and cover up the little chick with the pictured larger chick.

The chick has grown larger but it is still hungry. The feed symbols on your meadow will again show you what the chick would like to eat and which feed dishes you have to collect in order to help your chick grow!

End of the Game

The first child to turn over his or her last card and cover up all the other cards with the little bird pictured on it wins the game. His or her bird is now full-fledged and flies out into the world. It can happen that several children turn over their last card at the same time. In this case, these children win together. All the other children might like to play the game to the end and also have their chicks become big and strong.
