Materials for the game
- 1 game board
- 24 dice (6 each in red, yellow, green and blue)
- 4 dice cups
- 1 bag
Preparing for the game
The game board is laid out so that all players can reach it easily. All 24 dice are put in the linen bag and mixed up well. Depending on the number of players, each player takes dice from the bag and puts them in his dice cup.
- If 2 are playing each player receives 12 dice.
- If 3 are playing each player receives 8 dice.
- If 4 are playing each player receives 6 dice.
Rules of the game
When the "Start Ligretto" command is given, the players all throw all of their dice at the same time. Each player endeavours to place as many fitting dice as possible from the throw onto the game board. The rules for this are as follows:
- The dice must always be placed down in the row with the matching colours.
- The dice must always be put in ascending order (example: The yellow 2 may not be placed down until the yellow 1 is already in place).
- The players may only pick up and place down the dice with one hand.
Since all the players play at once, the following applies: First come, first served. If player A has placed down the yellow one from his throw faster than player B, player B must throw his yellow 1 again because he can no longer place it.
If a player is unable or does not want to place down any of the dice from his throw, he again throws all the remaining dice. Caution: It is not permitted to throw only some of the dice again.
As soon as a player is able to place down his last die in compliance with the rules, he calls out "Ligretto STOP". No more dice are allowed to be placed down. The dice not placed by this time remain lying open to view on the table until the scores have been worked out.
How to score
The player who succeeded in placing all the dice now receives a plus point for each die the other players have been unable to place. The other players receive a minus point for each of the remaining dice.
Example: Lukas ends the round because he was able to place down his 6th die. Nina still has 3 dice in front of her. Marie still has one die and Jonas still has 4 dice. Lukas receives 8 plus points, Nina 3 minus points, Marie 1 minus point and Jonas 4 minus points.
After the points have been awarded, the dice are all put back into the bag and mixed up well. Then all the players again take the same number of dice out of the bag as at the beginning of the game (refer to "Preparing for the game") and a new round begins.
End of game
3 rounds are played for each player in the game; therefore, if there are four players 12 rounds are played. The person who has gathered the most plus points after these rounds has won the game. If there is a tie there is more than one winner.
Tip: When playing with children the dice can be distributed differently. For example, the adults then receive 1 or 2 more dice.
