- 25 square tiles: 5x 0pt, 5x 1pt, 5x 2pt, 5x 3pt, 5x -1pt
- 18 green counters
- 18 red counters
Setup
Shuffle the bookshelf tiles and put them in random order on the table creating a 5x5 square board. This is board is called "the bookshelf". The bookshelf has 36 spots where a counter can be placed: the 36 intersections of the lines around each tile. Each player chooses a colour and takes all counters of that colour. The player who most recenlty have been into a library is declared the starting player. Otherwise determine the starting player randomly.
The Game
The starting player takes one counter of his/her colour and places it on the corner of one of the squares that compose the bookshelf. The other player places TWO of his counters on other corners. NOTE: On each corner there can be only one counter.
The starting player places one counter again, then the second player places one counter, and this operation is repeated, with the players placing one counter at a time taking turns, until a stone has been placed on all 36 corners of the bookshelf.
The game is then considered over.
Scoring
When the game is over, players check for each square of the bookshelf who has the majority on that square.
Majority is obtained having more stones of one colour than any other.
For example, if on a square's corners there are 2 red stones and 2 green stones, nobody has the majority so nobody gets the books in that square. 3 red stones and 1 green stones means that the red player has the majority on that square.
The player with the majority of counters on the corners of a square, receives the number of books on that square as victory points, or loses 1 victory point in case there is a mouse in the square, because it eats one of the player's books.
If a player not only has the majority, but also only stones of her/his colour are placed on that square's corners (this is called "total control"), the value of points he receives or loses is increased by 1.
This also means that an empty square (no books) grants 1 victory point when there is total control, and that a mouse grants -2 victory points when there is total control.
When all squares have been checked, the player with the higher victory points total is declared winner of the match.
Point Check
It is suggested to check the points one player at a time, passing slowly over all squares and checking how many points it is worth for that player.
Optional Tiebreaker Rule
From the publisher's separate "Libraria – tiebreaker" sheet:
You might have noticed that there is no tiebreaker rule in Libraria. This was a design choice, because it is a combinatory/complete information game, and we think that for players who competed at same level the draw is the right result.
If you prefer to have a tiebreaker rule, you can use this: in case of tie the first player wins the game.
This is because the "second player's first move is 2 gems" rule might, in some board's configurations, be a slight advantage for the second player.
In any way you decide to play, have fun!
