Greater Animals

Setup

Randomly choose two Greater Animal cards. Place them face-up below the animal mat.

Gameplay

Each Greater Animal grants a one-time ability that all players have access to throughout the game. On a player's turn, they may elect to use the ability of one Greater Animal. When they do, they place one of their mushroom tokens on the Greater Animal to show they have used it.

Players may only use each Greater Animal's ability once during the game. Some Greater Animal abilities have specific activation requirements or costs.

Greater Animal Cards

The rulebook illustrates two of the six Greater Animal cards with their printed ability text:

  • Wolf: Once per game, you may discard up to 3 random animals from your Forest. For each animal discarded, gain 1 animal or draw 1 leaf card.
  • Elk: Once per game, after placing your leaf, you may flip all of your baby mushrooms on leaves that are adjacent to it to adult mushrooms.

Editor's note: the rulebook does not print the ability text of the other four Greater Animal cards; those abilities are printed only on the cards themselves and are not reproduced here.

Season Events

Setup

  1. At the start of the game, randomly pick one Season Event from each Set (A, B, C).
  2. Randomize the 3 selected Season Events and place one above each Frost line and the Winter line on the season track.
  3. Place 2 acorns next to the leftmost Season Event, 3 acorns next to the middle Season Event, and 4 acorns next to the rightmost Season Event.

Gameplay

Each Season Event has a unique condition. When the season marker crosses a Frost or Winter line, immediately check to see which player has best completed the condition of the Season Event.

The player who best completed the condition of that Season Event gains the acorns. The first Season Event awards 2 acorns, the second awards 3, and the third awards 4. If there is a tie for the condition, the tied players split the acorns evenly, discarding any extra.

Editor's note: the rulebook shows example Season Event tiles titled "Season of Climbing", "Season of Fungi" and "Season of Friends", but the scoring conditions are shown only as icons on the tiles and are not spelled out in the rulebook text. The conditions are not transcribed here.

Animal Allies

Setup

  1. Shuffle the cards and deal 2 to each player.
  2. Each player chooses 1 to keep and discards the other one.
  3. All players reveal which Ally they kept.

If playing with Season Events or Greater Animals, choose Animal Allies last.

Gameplay

Each Animal Ally brings with it a unique ability. Players will be able to use their Animal Ally's ability throughout the game.

Some Animal Allies have specific activation requirements, costs, or limitations. Most Animal Ally abilities can only be used on your turn.

Animal Ally Card Example

The rulebook illustrates one of the fifteen Animal Ally cards with its printed ability text:

  • Fox: During your turn, you may peek at the top card of the animal deck. Once per turn, you may discard 2 leaf cards to draw an animal.

Editor's note: the rulebook does not print the ability text of the other Animal Ally cards; those abilities are printed only on the cards themselves and are not reproduced here.

Animal Ally Draft

In this advanced variant, you draft 3 Animal Allies and add them to your forest throughout the game.

Setup

  1. Deal 3 Animal Allies to each player.
  2. All players simultaneously choose 1 Animal Ally to keep and pass the remaining Animals to the player on their left.
  3. Repeat until each player has chosen 3 Animal Allies.
  4. Each player chooses 1 Animal Ally to start the game with and places it face-up in their play area.

Adding Allies

At the end of the first two Frost steps, each player chooses 1 of their unplayed Animal Allies, and places it face-up in their play area. Players may use abilities from all of their played Allies each turn.
