Goal of the Game
Be the last pirate in play.
A player is eliminated if:
- They make a pair during a Challenge.
- They are rightly accused by another player of having a pair.
- They wrongly accuse another player of having a pair.
Note: a pair is made of two cards of the same value. A card's value indicates its number of copies in the deck (so there is one 1, two 2s ... ten 10s). You therefore cannot have a pair of 1s.
Setup
- Deal 3 cards to each player.
- All players choose and play, at the same time, 1 card from their hand face up in front of them.
- The player who played the card of the lowest value starts. In case of a tie, the oldest player starts.
Turn
When it is your turn, choose one of the following actions:
- ATTACK: Play 1 card from your hand in front of another player, without making a pair with the cards he has in front of him. It is his turn.
- CHALLENGE: Draw a card without looking at it and place it face up in front of another player:
- If you do not make a pair with that player's other visible cards, the challenge is successful; it is his turn.
- If you make a pair, you are eliminated. Discard that card. It is the turn of the player to your left.
- ACCUSE A PLAYER: That player shows you his cards (to you alone).
- Your accusation succeeds if he has a pair among the cards in his hand and those in front of him. He is then eliminated. It is the turn of the player to your left.
- If he has no pair, you are the one who is eliminated. It is his turn.
- DRAW: Draw 1 card without showing it (if it makes a pair with the cards in your hand or those placed in front of you, say nothing; you have not lost as long as you are not accused). It is the turn of the player to your left.
The last player in play wins the game.
Variant: A tribord! (2-7 players)
Adapted from a game by James Ernest and Paul Peterson.
Goal of the Game
Be the richest pirate!
Components
- 10 betting tokens per player.
- 1 "Button" first-player token.
Setup
Choose a first player; he takes the "Button". Place 2 cards face up in the centre of the table to form the common hand. If the two cards form a pair, discard them. Each player puts one token in the pot to begin.
Turn
Starting with the button, each player decides to draw or to block.
- DRAW: Pay one coin to the pot, then add a card face up to the centre of the table. The aim is to draw a card that does not form a pair with the other cards. This is called a "successful draw". By making a "successful draw", you automatically eliminate the players who blocked previously. If the drawn card forms a pair, you are eliminated. Discard the card that formed the pair and remove yourself from the game.
- BLOCK: Announce out loud that you wish to block. By doing so, you judge that it is no longer possible to add cards to the common hand without forming a pair. To win the pot, you must block and hope that no other player makes a "successful draw" after you (in other words, that no other player manages to add cards to the common hand without forming a pair).
End of the Round
The round ends when the players have all been eliminated or have blocked. When only one player remains, he must block.
The pot is shared among all players still in contention, that is, those who blocked without having been eliminated by a "successful draw". If coins remain in the pot after the split, keep the surplus to form the pot of the next round.
The game ends as soon as one of the players has no tokens left at the end of a round.
