Goal of the Game
The goal is not to laugh. Whoever laughs loses a life. Whoever laughs twice is out, but can still try to make the others laugh and so collect points toward victory. The game ends when only one person still has at least one life left, or when the timer has run out. At the end there are at least two titles to win:
- If only one person still has at least 1 life in front of them, the game ends and that person is the Champion of LOL. If the timer runs out, all persons who still have the most lives at that moment win.
- Afterwards the Joker of the round is crowned: whoever has the most laugh points lying in front of them is evaluated. Whoever made the other persons laugh most often may call themselves the Joker of LOL.
- If one person wins both with the remaining lives and with the laugh points, that person gets both titles.
Before the Game
It is best to tell everyone before the game evening, so they can prepare and bring funny costumes, gimmicks and jokes. In LOL, (almost) everything that produces laughs is allowed. The more unpredictably you behave, the funnier and therefore harder it gets for everyone else.
Game Setup
- Everyone chooses a character, takes the matching stands, places them in the stand feet and sets both in front of themselves. These are your lives for the game. Surplus characters go back into the box. Shuffle the Inspiration cards and deal 1 card face down to each person. Before you start the game, read your Inspiration card. It contains suggestions for how you can make the others laugh.
- Sort the Gong cards by their backs: blue (smileys), green (speech bubbles) and pink (microphone). Place each as a face-down stack in the middle of the table. Important: so that the game stays varied for as long as possible, do not simply read the cards. Let yourselves be surprised at the next game!
- Place the Gong chips with the gong facing up as a stack. Place the Laugh chips with the inscription "Last One Laughing" facing up and put the buzzer in the middle of the table, within everyone's reach.
- Also have a phone, some paper and pens ready. And now the game can begin!
Game Flow
Set a timer on your phone for 20 minutes.
The game begins when one person presses the buzzer. As soon as the sound rings out, the round begins and from then on nobody may laugh.
If you catch another person laughing or grinning, hit the buzzer. The round is then interrupted and the person caught loses a life. If you made a person laugh, you get a laugh point as a bonus. After the evaluation, you continue the game by having one person press the buzzer again.
Note: during the evaluation phase, laughing is always allowed. Only once the buzzer is pressed again may no one laugh.
If you lose your second life, you are eliminated from the game and are from now on considered a "passive person". As a passive person you can still cause plenty of trouble by trying to make the still-active persons laugh. You can also keep collecting laugh points and so be crowned Joker at the end of the game. Important: passive persons may of course always laugh!
What Counts as "Laughing"?
Laughing counts when you make typical laughing sounds, even if the corners of your mouth point downward. You also laugh if the corners of your mouth point upward (a smile); it becomes even clearer if your teeth are visible. To be safe, everyone should agree before the game what counts as laughing. It is forbidden to cover your mouth to hide a laugh or to hide in a corner in order to laugh.
Were You Caught Laughing?
Then you lose a life by returning one of your lives to the box. Important: this game is about fun, so honesty is the highest rule. If you laughed, admit it and do not argue! If you were caught laughing, work out together who made you laugh. In case of doubt, the laughing person decides. This person or these persons receive a Laugh chip from the middle. These are placed in front of them with the smiley side facing up.
Where Is It Played?
This is determined by whoever invited everyone to this LOL game round. As a general recommendation, do not use only the game table as the venue. If possible, everyone should be able to move freely in one or several rooms. This way you can avoid people, prepare for a new gag, or deliberately "target" certain persons because you absolutely want to steal a life from them. Within the play area, everyone may move freely!
How Do I Make Someone Laugh?
Here there are no limits to imagination. You may bring props, costumes and gimmicks to make others laugh. Slapstick, sketches, jokes: everything is allowed! LOL – The Game also offers many suggestions and jokes that help you make the other persons laugh. These ideas are on the game cards. The only thing not allowed is touching or tickling persons (or only when a card specifies it and everyone has agreed to it in advance).
The Cards
Inspiration: Each person receives one card at the start of the game. On it you will find ideas for how to make the others laugh. These are only suggestions: you may carry out the actions suggested on it, but you do not have to. They may also inspire you to other ideas.
Gong!
To trigger a Gong action, call out loudly "GONG!". Whatever everyone else is doing: when they hear the call "GONG!", they return to the game table and give you their full attention.
Important: passive persons, i.e. those already eliminated, may ring the gong at any time as well.
-
Take a Gong chip.
-
Courage is rewarded here: turn the Gong chip to the side with the smiley. This way you have scored immediately.
-
Then draw a Gong card from a stack of your choice and follow the instructions on the card. You have the choice between three different categories:
Read aloud! These cards contain jokes or funny sayings. You may choose individual jokes or sayings to deliver, or you may read the entire card aloud. Caution: you could laugh yourself!
Group game! All persons (including passive persons) take part in these games. Nobody may refuse. Here too, the rules are on the respective card.
You & Me! When you play one of these cards, choose one person (active or passive) and perform a funny mini-game or sketch with them. The exact rules are described on the respective card. The chosen person may not refuse.
Important: you do not win LOL by successfully completing the mini-games! A round of LOL can only be won by the person who has gone the longest without laughing or who has made the most others laugh. Do not forget this in the mini-games either.
Note: have you prepared your own jokes or sketches and want the undivided attention of the others? Then you can also trigger a free Gong action to bring in your own creative ideas. You take a Gong chip, but do not have to draw a card.
All cards in this game are intended for persons aged 14 and up. The free Gong actions also leave you room to adapt the humour to your game group. For example, in pure adult groups it is conceivable to make the jokes and sketches "more adult". We recommend agreeing on this in advance within the group.
End of the Game
When the timer has run out, or when only one person still has lives left, the game is over. Now evaluate, as described under Goal of the Game, which person or persons have won.
And now we wish you a serious face for the funny game!
