Labelled parts of the board illustration: the rock island with viewing window and Kraken ghost (Felseninsel mit Sichtfenster und Krakengeist); the sea hole (Seeloch); the Glupsch ghost hiding place (Glupschgeisterversteck); the Glupsch ghost tiles; the sea lid (Seedeckel); the Kraken ghost tiles (Krakengeist-Plättchen); the starfish (Seestern); the die (Würfel); the deep sea (Tiefsee); the arrow for the direction of play, clockwise (Pfeil für Spielrichtung, Uhrzeigersinn).
Before the First Game
Take the game material out of the box and carefully punch out the cardboard parts. All cardboard parts that show a garbage bin are thrown away.
Now assemble the turntable: carefully push the turning base through the small disc, and then through the large disc. Make sure that the fish and the Glupsch ghosts face upward.
Game Setup
Before every game, set up the playing area.
- Place the turntable with the fish and Glupsch ghosts into the box insert and press it down lightly.
- Distribute all Glupsch ghost tiles on the large disc with the fish. IMPORTANT: The tiles must lie flat next to one another. They may not lie on top of one another, nor on the small disc with the Glupsch ghosts, and they must not tilt.
- Place the game board into the box insert and press it down gently until it clicks in slightly. Place the sea lids with their domed side facing up over the sea holes.
- Put the rotating figure onto the cross of the turning base. Turn the turntable in the direction of the arrow (but without pressing it down) until a Glupsch ghost appears in the viewing window.
IMPORTANT: Make sure the sea lids sit well in the openings so that they do not slip. The playing area should also be well lit.
The three Kraken ghost tiles are not used in the basic game. They are only used for the Kraken ghost variant (see "Variant: Mean Kraken Ghost" below).
Choosing starfish and seating: Place the die ready and let each player choose a starfish in one player colour (yellow, red, blue or green). Unused starfish go back into the box. Place the box with the game board between you so that each player sits in front of the corner of the hiding place of their own colour and has a good view of the rock island with the viewing window.
With 2 players: Each player receives two starfish. Player 1 plays with green and blue. Player 2 plays with red and yellow. Place the box between you so that each player has the hiding places of their own colours in front of them and a good view of the viewing window.
Goal of the Game
The first player to completely fill their Glupsch ghost hiding place (with 9 Glupsch ghosts) wins!
With 2 players: The winner is the player who first completely fills both of their Glupsch ghost hiding places (with 9 Glupsch ghosts each).
Playing the Game
Play proceeds clockwise. The youngest player begins.
Each round goes as follows:
- Roll the die and turn the Kraken ghost
- Search for Glupsch ghosts
- Place a starfish
- Fish for Glupsch ghosts
- Pass the die
1. Roll the Die and Turn the Kraken Ghost
Roll the die and use the Kraken figure to turn the turntable in the direction of the arrow. Turn it by as many Glupsch ghosts as you rolled eyes. If you roll a two, you turn the turntable by two Glupsch ghosts with the Kraken figure.
IMPORTANT: Count the Glupsch ghosts that appear and disappear again in the viewing window.
2. Search for Glupsch Ghosts
Look together to see which Glupsch ghost appears in the viewing window, and call out its name or ghost type (see page 1): Maggie (seahorse ghost), Lisa (jellyfish ghost), Don (moustache ghost), Luc (snail ghost), Bob (pufferfish ghost) or Al (eel ghost).
At the same time, but each for yourself, search the deep sea for the matching Glupsch ghost, without lifting the sea lids! With a bit of luck, you may find several Glupsch ghosts of the same kind under one sea lid.
IMPORTANT: Look through the sea lids from above or from the side. Change your viewing angle during the search to see more. But make sure you do not block the view of the other players!
3. Place a Starfish
As soon as you have found the matching Glupsch ghost, quickly place your starfish on the corresponding sea lid. Once all players have placed their starfish on a sea lid, the search is over.
If you find no matching Glupsch ghost, place your starfish on any free sea lid. With some luck, the Glupsch ghost you are looking for is hiding underneath!
IMPORTANT: With your starfish you block the sea lid for the other players. They may not place their starfish on your sea lid. Placed starfish may no longer be moved.
With 2 players: Each player places their two starfish on different sea lids.
Tip for Glupsch ghost experts: If all players except one have placed their starfish, you may end the search this way: while the other players count to 10, the last player must quickly decide on which free sea lid to place their starfish. When the time is up, that player may no longer place a starfish and is out for this round.
4. Fish for Glupsch Ghosts
Fishing is done one after another, beginning with the player who rolled the die. Take your starfish off the sea lid, lift the sea lid and look into the sea hole to see whether the Glupsch ghost you were looking for is there. If you discover matching Glupsch ghosts (one or more), fish them out of the sea hole with your fingers and place them in your Glupsch ghost hiding place.
In addition, you may fish for further matching Glupsch ghosts in the sea hole: move the Glupsch ghost tiles as you like and pull them out from under the sea hole. Any matching Glupsch ghosts you discover in this way are also taken out of the sea hole and placed in your Glupsch ghost hiding place.
You may fish in any case, whether or not you find a matching Glupsch ghost directly under the sea lid. If you find no matching Glupsch ghost, you unfortunately go away empty-handed this time. Put the sea lid back over the sea hole.
IMPORTANT: By moving the Glupsch ghost tiles, other Glupsch ghosts in the deep sea are also shifted. This can be good or bad for you or your fellow players. While fishing, pay special attention that the Glupsch ghosts you want do not slip away, otherwise you have had bad luck!
With 2 players: The player who rolled the die fishes first, under both of their sea lids, before the second player takes their turn. You may decide yourselves into which of your Glupsch ghost hiding places you place the fished ghosts. If one of your Glupsch ghost hiding places is full, you nevertheless continue with two starfish.
5. Pass the Die
The die passes to the next player in the direction of the arrow, and a new round begins.
End of the Game
The first player to completely fill their Glupsch ghost hiding place (with 9 Glupsch ghosts) wins! The round is still played to the end. If several players then have a full Glupsch ghost hiding place, they win together.
With 2 players: The winner is the player who first completely fills both of their Glupsch ghost hiding places (with 9 Glupsch ghosts each).
Variant: Mean Kraken Ghost (Gemeiner Krakengeist)
When setting up, also distribute the three Kraken ghost tiles on the large disc with the fish. During play, the Kraken ghost blocks the sea holes in which it surfaces.
That means you may not fish for Glupsch ghosts from sea holes in which the Kraken ghost can be seen. Glupsch ghosts that you fish from the sea hole you first place on the table in front of you. If you pull a Kraken ghost out from under the sea hole while fishing, you must return all Glupsch ghosts you have fished in the current round to the sea hole. The Kraken ghost tile also stays in the sea hole. If you end fishing voluntarily, without having caught a Kraken ghost, you may place all caught Glupsch ghosts in your Glupsch ghost hiding place.
Tip for families: If adults and children play together, the rules of the variant apply only to the adults.
Safety Note
ATTENTION! Never leave the sea lids (magnifying lenses) lying in the sun unattended, because of their focusing effect there is a risk of fire! After playing, put the sea lids back into the box. This also protects them from scratches. Never look directly at the sun, neither through the sea lids nor with the naked eye. There is a risk of blindness!
