1.1 Special Terrain Types
1.1.1 Special Structures
Should you use the Aspern-Essling 1809 map, not the DTTB map.
The church in Aspern and the Granary in Essling are special terrain features.
1.1.2 Towns
The following hexes are designated as towns: Aspern, Essling, Stadt Groß Enzersdorf, and Deutsch-Wagram.
All other hexes which contain buildings are considered Villages.
Any single hex by itself is considered a Hamlet.
1.1.3 Austrians in Towns and Villages
The Austrian Army was effective at digging into and fortifying strong points.
- Austrian or Hungarian Linie Infanterie (not Grenadiers, Grenz or Jägers): Austrian or Hungarian, Linie infantry plus two to the dice roll for any morale check.
- Austrian or Hungarian, Linie infantry printed fire values are multiplied by 1.5 during defensive fire when in towns and villages but not Feldlagers.
- Austrian Freiwilliger, Landwehr and Karl's Legion add two to their printed morale value when in a town. No change for village or hamlet. They are much easier to control in the open rather than dispersed in a town.
1.1.4 Bridges & Fords
- Cavalry may not charge across a bridge.
- Bridges and fords are ignored for the purposes of melee, i.e. treat them as if they did not exist.
1.1.5 Swamps
- Only infantry formations in Tirailleur (skirmish) order may enter swamp hexes.
- Units may not melee out of the swamp.
- Melee values attacking into or defending in the swamp are x .25 of printed.
1.1.6 Slopes
For this engagement, slope hexsides do not block line of sight. The elevation changes are very slight in this area.
1.1.7 Russbach Feldlager
There were almost six weeks between the battles of Aspern-Essling and Wagram. The Archduke Charles, victor of Aspern-Essling, was keeping a close eye on the French army on Lobau Island, as he waited out Napoleon for his next encounter. Charles had placed his large Austrian army in a circle on the vast Marchfeld plain surrounding the French fortifications on Lobau. There, the Austrians sat for many weeks before the next battle. The large Austrian battalions settled down into semi-formal camps. There, the days and nights passed on in the bivouacs, which were starting to take on the permanent air of settlements.
These encampments would take on some semblance of defensive positions on the otherwise open Marchfeld during the Battle of Wagram, which, for the Austrians, was otherwise largely barren of natural or man-made defences. These encampments are symbolized on the maps with their special hex markings. Here is how the Feldlager hexes are considered for play in Wagram:
- Any infantry formation in a Feldlager is considered to be in general order or skirmish.
- Cavalry is not permitted in a Feldlager nor is cavalry permitted to attack into a Feldlager.
- Artillery is either limbered or unlimbered.
- Austrian Infanterie (battalions), Karl's Legion and skirmishers are plus two to the dice roll for any morale check while in the Feldlager.
- Austrian infantry firing out of a Feldlager do so at one point per increment.
- Austrian battalions may be in one or two hexes of the Feldlager.
- Austrian battalions may be accompanied by one artillery battery which may be place in one or two hexes to reflect the Austrian infantry composition in the Feldlager.
- The Austrians do not have to perform a pre-melee defensive moral check if in the Feldlager.
- The French receive no additional morale, defence or offensive advantage for being in the Feldlager.
- Feldlagers block line-of-sight.
- Feldlagers have front and rear hexsides. When attacked by fire or melee through the rear hexside, treat the Feldlager as clear terrain. The Feldlager are two hexes and the rear has doted lines.
1.1.8 Russbach Stream (defined by a black outline with the blue stream)
While not wide, the steep banks of this stream prohibit artillery crossing except at fords and bridges.
- Infantry forced to retreat across the stream is disordered and may incur additional increment losses. The losses depend on the attacker's die roll.
- For each retreated infantry battalion (not in skirmish order):
- If the attacker's roll is even – one additional loss.
- If the attacker's roll is odd – two additional loses.
- Cavalry retreated by combat across the Russbach is routed.
- Fords and bridges across the Russbach only facilitate movement. For any combat or retreat, proceed as if the ford or bridge did not exist.
- Consult the INFANTRY MELEE MORALE MODIFIERS table for effects on combat.
1.2 Special Unit Types and Formations
Each of the national armies fighting in this campaign has a unique quality and tactical doctrine which is revealed in the rules and will necessarily change the perspective and play of the contestants.
1.2.1 Elite Infantry Troops
A well trained and experienced infantry formation was able to refrain from firing until the command was given, at close range. The discipline of elite troops and their ability to hold fire to the critical moment of an assault despite loses, made them the ultimate reserve.
Elite infantry troops are defined as those with a printed morale, without modification, of 11 through 16. When an elite unit fires defensively against any attacking hex and the attacker suffers a loss, the pre-melee morale check of all units participating in that attack, are impacted.
The effect is that all the attacking units in this case suffer a negative adjustment to the pre-melee morale check. The exact adjustment depends based on the morale of the defending unit with the lower the defender's morale number, the higher the negative adjustment. A 15 or 16 morale is minus 6; a 13 or 14 minus 9: an 11 or 12 is a minus 12. These minus values are applied as modifiers to the attacker's morale for each increment the attacker lost due to the Defensive Fire Attack.
When an elite unit attacks, the opposite is true. If the attacker inflicts a loss the pre-melee morale check of all the defending units are impacted utilizing the relationship identified above. The attacking units must however have stacking points in a relationship of at least 1 to 1 of the defender.
If an elite unit is the attacker against an elite unit, this rule does not apply. In the event of an elite vs. an elite, the attacker has the standard modifier of minus 3 for each fire increment loss.
1.2.2 Cavalry Recovery of Readiness
Cavalry may not recover a level of readiness if it is in an enemy zone of influence or is under fire as a target of an offensive or defensive attack (feu).
1.2.3 Austrian Freiwilliger, Landwehr and Karl's Legion Troops
After the Battle of Aspern-Essling, Erzherzog Karl looked to replace losses and increase the size of his army. In many cases he used part time troops to bolster regiments and add battalions. The value of these troops varied from expert marksmen clubs to groups that drilled once per month. None were full time, professional soldiers. Due to the soldier's late mobilization and limited training, these Austrian troops are restricted to specific formations which they may adopt.
Freiwilliger and Karl's Legion may only be in Column, General Order, Skirmish, Carre, Masse or Marche Order. These troops do not have the option of forming into line.
Only the Freiwilliger or Karl's Legion battalions that have a range factor of two, on the specific side of their counters, may enter Skirmish formation.
The Freiwilliger may not make any type of voluntary formation change during an enemy phase, i.e. they may not form Carre during an enemy charge sequence. They must stand in their formation using the morale check procedure. Carre may be formed in the Freiwilliger's movement phase. Landwehr may not form Carre, Masse or Line at any time.
1.2.4 Austrian Tactical Formations
It is very important for the Austrian player to understand and use these formations. In accordance with the Instructionspunkte für die kk Armee zur Campagne des Jahres 1794, the doctrine is for Austrian and Hungarian infantry to attack and defend while in line formation. Many reforms were implemented but their use was sporadic. Freiwilliger infantry had only received the most elemental training. Grenadiers were well trained troops.
The basic line formation regulations apply to all Austrian Infantry and Grenadiers at the battle. These include fire defence, movement and fire multiplier.
- When charged by enemy cavalry Austrian Infantry and Grenadiers may not attempt to form Carre from either column or battalion masse or divisional masse. They may freely form Carre from line when charged or during their own movement phase, by paying for the formation change.
- In compliance with the standard Premier ME rules all Austrian or Hungarian Infantry and Grenadiers in Line formation are minus two from their printed movement value.
- Austrian or Hungarian Infantry, in line, subtract three from the printed (column) morale values.
- Austrian or Hungarian Grenadiers do not have any morale modifiers for being in column or line.
- Infantry battalions in line may occupy three hexes if they have at least four increments in each hex. The result (morale, melee) of any individual hex affects the entire battalion.
1.2.5 Austrian or Hungarian (Linie or Grenadier) Battalion Masse
Based on the Tactical Reforms of Archduke Charles, as detailed in the 1807 Exercier-Reglement, the Battalion Masse has the following characteristics;
- Only battalions may use this formation, and only in clear terrain. One battalion in a hex.
- The Battalion Masse faces a hexside. Use an informational counter to designate, when the battalion is in Masse.
- A Battalion Masse has 3 front and 2 flank and 1 rear hex sides.
- The Battalion Masse will exert a zone of influence into the three hexes adjacent to their front.
- Battalion Masse moves at minus two from the printed value; fires as a column; and has a fire defence of 5 from all orientations.
- Battalion Masse may only form Carre, during the friendly movement phase.
- Only Austrian or Hungarian Linie Infantry may form Battalion Masse.
- When an enemy cavalry combat formation charges a Battalion Masse, the infantry must check morale in an attempt to stand in its current formation, and when doing so adds 3 to the die roll. All other charge modifiers apply.
- Cavalry does not receive the doubling bonus for having charged in a straight line for the last three hexes, when attacking an Austrian Battalion Masse formation from the front hexsides.
- Cavalry which melees a Battalion Masse has the cavalry melee value x.5 after adjustment for losses.
- Lancer rules effect a Battalion Masse.
- The melee multipliers for flank and rear still apply in combination with the x.5.
- Artillery may not stack with units in Battalion Masse.
1.2.6 Austrian or Hungarian (Line or Grenadier) Divisional Masse
- Only battalions may use this formation and only in clear terrain. One battalion to a hex.
- The Divisional Masse faces a hex vertex. Use an informational counter to designate, when the battalion is in Masse.
- A Divisional Masse has 4 front and 2 rear hex sides.
- The Divisional Masse will not exert a zone of influence into hexes adjacent to their front.
- Divisional Masse moves at plus one to the printed value; fires as a column; and has a fire defence of 6 from all orientations.
- Divisional Masse may only form Carre during the friendly movement phase.
- When an enemy cavalry combat formation charges a Divisional Masse, the infantry must check morale in an attempt to stand in its current formation and when doing so adds two to the die roll. All other charge modifiers apply.
- Like with a Carre, charging or moving cavalry may move adjacent, then on top of and then adjacent to the Divisional Masse depending on movement points. The Divisional Masse fires defensively at each forward location or when cavalry is in the same hex.
- The Divisional Masse fires x 1.5 column value of the increments in the hex when cavalry is in the same hex. Cavalry treats the Divisional Masse Formation as an enemy Carre for all purposes except as outlined herein. In real terms the cavalry rides through the formation the same as a Carre.
- Cavalry does not receive the doubling bonus for having charged in a straight line for the last three hexes when attacking an Austrian Divisional Masse formation.
- Cavalry which melees a Divisional Masse has the cavalry melee value X.75 after adjustment for losses.
- Lancer rules effect a Division Masse.
- The melee multipliers for flank and rear still apply in combination with the X.75.
- The Divisional Masse cannot voluntarily enter a zone of influence.
- Artillery may not stack with units in Divisional Masse.
1.2.7 Old Guard (Regs XXX)
For the purposes of the Regs XXX the following formations are considered Vieux Guard:
- 1re & 2e Grenadier à Pied
- 1re & 2e Chasseurs à Pied
1.2.8 Austrian Artillery Organization
Austrian Artillery is not centralized as with some other armies of the day.
Austrian artillery from different Korps may stack together in the same hex and but not all fire at a one target (a least one hex away), unless Generaladjutanten Grunne or Major Perl are in the stack. As members of Karl's staff either my direct the stack of artillery at one target. Grunne or Pearl must remain in the hex for the combination to continue. If either leaves only units from the same Korps may fire at a single target. If the artillery is all different, than only one battery could fire at a single target. If the target is adjacent, all batteries in a hex may fire.
1.2.9 Artillery Leaders of Special Ability
Adjacent batteries may fire upon the same target hex only if there is a leader in one of the firing hexes, and the leader has an artillery bonus. If three hexes of artillery are to fire at the same target, then a leader of special ability must be present and adjacent to all three firing hexes. Artillery in different hexes may, however, always combine their fire if the target hex is adjacent to them both.
All batteries which wish to limber must roll one die to do so. Leaders with an artillery bonus number add one to this roll. Leaders of special ability add three.
French Artillery Leaders of Special Ability: Napoleon, Sorbier, Duroc, Lauriston, Lariboisiere.
There are no Austrian Artillery Leaders of Special Ability.
1.2.10 Artillery Ricochet (Regs XXX)
Artillery fire that targets the following hexes terminates in them. Ricochet fire may bounce into, but not through, the following hexes:
- Hamlet / Village / Town
- Granary / Church
- Swamp
- Woods
- Garten
- Slope Up
- Feldlager
- Redoub
1.2.11 Cavalry Skirmish (Regs XXXX)
Cavalry Skirmishers must be deployed in clear terrain.
1.2.12 Cavalry Commanders of Special Ability (Regs XXX)
- French: Maréchal d'Empire Bessieres
- Austrian: None
1.2.13 Austrian Carneville Freikorps (FK)
This is a special units which have been locally raised and contains both Infanterie & Kavallerie in their battalion sized formation. Fire combat, Melee combat and all morale checks are as a normal infantry unit. They function and move as infantry for all purposes, with the following minor exceptions. Their formation is a carryover from the Seven Years War.
- The Freikorps may not Charge or Reaction Charge or Opportunity Charge enemy units.
- They may freely retreat before melee from all infantry types including skirmishers.
- They may not attempt a voluntary formation change in an enemy phase.
- They do not form any type of Masse.
- They may not enter towns because of concerns due to their history of looting.
1.2.14 Rheinbund / Saxon Infantry
The infantry of Hesse, Baden and Saxony are still rooted in the linear tactics of warfare. Therefore when in line, subtract two from their morale value. In response to an enemy charge they can only form Carre if already in line.
Bavarian troops have the flexibility of the French for all formations and changes.
1.2.15 Morale Levels
Consult the Morale Levels Summary. The chart sets a threshold, at the hour, to check the condition of the organization based on the number of battalions PGD or eliminated. Cavalry and Artillery don't count against this total and are not affected.
- The French Guard is by Division.
- The Regular French Army is by Corps.
- The Austrians are by Korps / Nordmann AG / Grenadier Reserve (2 divisions) / Johann (IÖ).
1.2.16 Austrian Tactical Considerations
The Austrian Army had only recently developed a Corps (Korps) system of organization. They had made progress but lacked the experienced staff officers of the French. Karl was committed to using the Korps structure. After Aspern-Essling this new structure was finalized.
For the elite troops like the Grenadiers, being on level one does not really present a problem. They are designed for shock combat, as a reserve and not to man a line.
The line regiments have large battalions and are oriented for sustained combat. However their organization is somewhat brittle. Grinding down battalions to the last increment is the quickest was to reach a morale level. Don't be afraid to pull the depleted back and place them in any type of terrain. Investigate using the larger Austrian battalions in the three hex lines with a brigade battery to increase their firepower and frontage.
The Austrian player must be careful to watch the morale levels of each corps. When one reaches level one it is best to pull it from the line, if possible and rotate with a fresh troops. This may include screening the corps with cavalry.
If an Austrian Korps gets to level two, it is in danger of rapidly reaching level three. This is because the morale modifiers are cumulative. A 32 morale becomes a 42 as a base. If the battalion is routed it may be a 52. If a Korps gets to level three, it rarely returns to level one. In essence it is finished for the rest of the day.
Morale management is a key consideration for the vast Austrian Army.
Experiment with all of the different Austrian formations especially Masse. Discover when these provide a better attack or defence opportunity against what you know of from the French.
1.2.17 Other Notable Troops
Italienne are represented by the Tirailleur Corses & du Po in II Corps d'Armée, and the Italien Garde in Le Armée d'Italie.
1re Chevauléger-lancier Polonaise de la Vieille Garde. The Polish Lancers may not use their lance bonus until they defeat (DD, DR, DS) the Schwarzenberg Uhlans. See Scenario Information.
1.2.18 The July 5 scenarios may be used to define the July 6 Historical Battle
Scenarios One, Two and Three feature key areas of the battlefield on July 5, 1809. After playing each of these early small scenarios, use the finishing locations as the start of the July 6 battle. There is also a structure to define loses that carry over from the night of July 5 until the morning of July 6. Individual pdf maps are included.
1.2.19 Maréchal Masséna
Marshal Masséna was injured touring Lobau Island with Napoleon, several days before the battle. He conducted his command of the IV Corps from his carriage during the Battle of Wagram and that requires some special considerations.
Marshal Masséna is represented by two unique counters; his personal à pied counter that has a movement of two and his carriage dans un chariot counter which has a movement of seven.
- Marshal Masséna à pied: This Masséna moves as an infantry unit but may always move one hex. In all other aspects it is treated as a leader counter.
- Marshal Masséna dans un chariot: This counter moves with all the restrictions of horse artillery. The carriage has a fire defence of 10 and has 3 "increments" available before it is destroyed. When destroyed (3 increments lost), Marshal Masséna's dans un chariot counter is removed and the à pied counter is used. Of course there is a possibility of a leader casualty when the carriage is fired upon. The carriage does not have a melee defence value. The carriage counter may be stacked with any other unit and does not count against stacking or additions to the die roll for fire combat. The carriage retreats with the unit it is stacked with, as any other leader counter. The carriage is the last to lose "increments" in a stack, in combat à la feu or melee. The carriage may be repaired (back to 3 increments again) by losing one increment from any French or Allied horse battery or captured (surrendered) Austrian battery. Once repaired, the Marshal may climb into the carriage again.
1.2.20 Armee von Innerösterreich
Wagram – Use with the Largely Historical Scenario 7 or 8.
Austrian Reinforcements – July 6, 1809.
Armee von Innerösterreich – Erzherzog Johann von Habsburg.
Knowing a major battle was about to begin, Erzherzog Karl summoned all available reinforcements. He counted on Johann to reinforce the left flank of the Austrian position. Unfortunately Johann was slow to mobilize and march from Pressburg to the battle field through Ober Siebenbrunn. A glance at the map indicates the entry of Johann at this position would conflict with Grouchy and Montbrun's attempt to turn the Austrian position on the Russbach Heights. This was a major concern of Napoleon.
Archduke John's army has the potential to start arriving at 10:00 am, based on this arrival table. Roll one hour before each potential appearance hour. (Roll at 10:00 for the 11:00 turn. If he does not arrive for the 11:00 turn, you would roll again at the next hour, for the 12:00 turn.) If Johann is successful then the Austrian Player would announce it one turn (twenty minutes before they arrive). These troops enter within four hexes of Ober Siebenbrunn. The roll should be seen by both sides.
Arrival Table (Use two dice)
- 10:00 – roll of 11, 12 or 13
- 11:00 – roll of 11, 12, 13 or 14
- 12:00 – roll of 11, 12, 13, 14 or 15
- 13:00 – roll of 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 or 16
- 14:00 – roll of 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 or 21
- 15:00 – roll of 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 21 or 22
- 16:00 – roll of 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, 23, 24 or 25
The French provided cavalry units to watch for the approach of Johann's Army. When it did not appear, these units were released.
- Grouchy's Cavalry Division starts in the Unter Siebenbrunn strategic box at the 7:00 turn.
- Montbrun's Cavalry Division starts in the Unter Siebenbrunn strategic box at the 7:00 turn.
- Option – Placing the Guard Cavalry (Lt. Cav.) Division in the Unter Siebenbrunn strategic box would add two to the die roll, for every hourly roll.
Any of these French Cavalry formations may be removed from the Unter Siebenbrunn strategic box but only at the hour, in the French phase. To do so Napoleon must send an Imperial Aide to the Ober Siebenbrunn to give the order for each hour, if removing one formation at a time.
- If Grouchy or Montbrun leave the strategic box before 12:00, subtract two from the die roll.
- If both Grouchy and Montbrun leave the strategic box before 12:00, subtract six from the die roll.
The French cavalry that is removed from the Unter Siebenbrunn strategic box is placed on the DW map with within three hexes of Ober Siebenbrunn and may not move the turn they are placed at this location. Once removed from the Unter Siebenbrunn strategic box, French cavalry may not be placed back into the Unter Siebenbrunn strategic box. The Imperial Aide may leave with any French cavalry.
Possible French Defeat? If French cavalry is in the Unter Siebenbrunn strategic box and Johann's roll is successful, meaning the Austrians will arrive on the map, the French cavalry has been defeated.
- The French Cavalry would enter, be placed on the map the turn before the Austrians arrive (on the map within 3 hexes of Ober Siebenbrunn and may not move the turn they are placed on the map).
- The French cavalry suffer loses. Roll one dice for each cavalry regiment. The number rolled is the number of increments lost by each regiment. They do check morale for these losses at that time.
Archduke's Johann's Army's morale is improved by 2 points for the entire game, due to this Austrian victory.
Archduke Johann's Army arrives on the eastern edge within 4 hexes of Ober Siebenbrunn and is free to move up to one half their movement.

- If units PGD and rout off of the playing are, and remain for one hour they are considered eliminated for this scenario. For Victory, Morale Levels are counted at the conclusion of the scenario.

Napoleon was very worried that Johann would appear with the Army of Inner Austria and support Karl's left flank against Davout. In this scenario Grouchy's and Montbrun's Cavalry try to stop the Austrians until help arrives. The Guard Light Cavalry and Horse Artillery are sent as reinforcements.

10. Scenario Seven: Historical Battle with DTTB Map
10.1 Summary
This is the historical battle on a more manageable scale. Use the 6 D-W Maps and the DTTB 11"x17" The DTTB map is on a different scale and thus moves are twice hourly and units are represented by divisions and some Austrian Cav. Brigades. Please consult the Drive to the Bridges 1809 document for detail.
- Date: July 6, 1809
- Start: 07:00
- End: 16:00
- Maps: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
- Boundary: See Scenario Map
Special Notes: The Austrian may choose one of two strategies:
- Freiherr v. Wimpffen (FW) – concentration of their forces on the Russbach through to Süssenbrunn, or
- Erzherzog Karl (EK) – the actual attack with Kleanu making an end run to the Lobau bridges.
In addition to the complexity of this decision, there is the possible arrival of Erzherzog Johann! All of this should keep the French guessing about Austrian intentions. The Austrian does not declare what strategy is being used. It is written down for future reference. This is revealed at the beginning of the last hour of the game.
1. Strategy Freiherr v. Wimpffen (FW): Klenau starts in the area designated on the NW map. Roll to activate each division:
- 1,2 Enter on time
- 3,4 20 minutes late
- 5,6 40 minutes late
The Grenadier Divisions and Schwarzenberg's Cavalry Division may also start the game:
- Located 10 hexes or greater, north of any Austrian Corps.
- They may also be off the North edge of the map. They could enter with one hour's notice to the French.
2. Strategy Erzherzog Karl (EK): The forces of Kleanu enter historically. Kleanu enters on the road to Hirschstadten – DTTB Map.
General Note: Start the game with the DTTB map and instructions.
10.2 Command
- The French receive one CP from Oudinot off-map.
- The Coalition receives one CP from Hohenzollern, and second from Karl when on-map.
- Baumersdorf is a local defence zone.
- DTTB bridge command rules apply on the DTTB map.

11. Scenario Eight: Historical Battle with Aspern-Essling Maps
11.1 Summary
This is the historical battle on a manageable scale. Use the 6 D-W Maps and the 4 AE Maps.
- Date: July 6, 1809
- Start: 07:00
- End: 16:00
- Maps: D-W 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, A-E 7, 8, 9 & 10
The reveal this at the beginning of the last hour of the game.
Kleanu enters on the road to Hirschstadten.
11.2 Command
- The French receive one CP from Oudinot off-map.
- The Coalition receives one CP from Hohenzollern, and second from Karl when on-map.
- Baumersdorf is a local defence zone.

12. Scenario Nine: Drive to the Bridges II
12.1 Summary
During the Battle of Wagram, the Austrian 6. Korps attacked and drove deep into the rear of the French Army and almost captured the vital Brücke zur Insel Lobau, Danube and then Wien. Before reaching this vital objective they were slowed by Marshal Masséna and driven back by the guns of Lobau Island. This action by Klenau represents the Austrian's offensive action and could have been a turning point. This scenario allows you to just play this important part of the battle as a standalone game. See the "Drive to the Bridge 1809" supplement for additional rules.

12.6 The Playing Pieces
Heading as printed: "BATAILLE EN ZONE DANS DTTB MAP (SCENARIO SEVEN)"
Both cavalry and infantry generic division, and cavalry brigade counters are provided without specific markings. A DTTB Organizational Muster is provided to identify what each division and brigade represents. Divisions may not be divided when moving to or on the DTTB map.
Place the actual troops and leader representing this formation. When a divisional counter is used, it represents the whole of a leader's command. The divisional leader may not leave his command unless incapacitated on the battle field.
Due to the large Austrian cav. regiments within an infantry division, these will be considered as separate brigades. (Schwarenberg Uhlans – Kolowrath, Liechtenstein, and Kienmayer Husaren – Klenau). No leaders are provided. To use this cavalry, the respective Korps & Division commander must be present within the area represented on the DTTB Map.
A divisional leader that is incapacitated must be replaced by a staff officer of that corps (Chief or Aide) or an Imperial aide. The Corps commander could also take over the division, when he moves to that area. The new commander would be moved into the area of the incapacitated leader. Place the incapacitated leader counter on the Organizational Muster. Without an active leader, the division can stand still, retreat on its line of communication and/or defend. It may not more forward in an enemy area or attack.
In order to use more than one division in an area for attack, a corps commander or higher must be present. He may attack with as many divisions as are in his corps that are present in an area, subject to concentration limitations.
12.7 Troop Concentrations in an Area
Each side may only place the equivalent of one corps or three unrelated divisions, stacked in a single area. The combat results will affect all the enemy / friendly units in that area.
One cavalry division or cav. brigade does not count for stacking in an area. The Gd Art. Counts as one division.
Taking over command of a corps (France): An incapacitated Corps commander may be only be replaced by Reille or Mouton from the Imperial Staff. These leaders would have to move into the area. They may bring other troops with them. They would appear at Esslinger Hof.
Unless the corps leader is incapacitated, Reille or Mouton could not take over command of a Corps (use of a stack of units in an area).
Taking over command of a Korps (Austria): Austrian Staff (ADC or Staff) from that Korps may be sent to an area to replace a divisional leader that has been incapacitated.
Archduke Charles is the only Austrian leader that may assume command of a Korps of multiple / different divisions in an area (Use of all the units in an area for attack). Should Archduke Charles move to the DTTB then he would not be available in other areas. This is important in Scenarios Seven and Eight.
12.8 Game Map and Tables
The Drive to the Bridges 1809 A3 DTTB map is provided in the game package.
The, Organization Muster for both sides are provided at the cloud site. Representative counters are provided in the counter mix. Lobau Island has an intrinsic defence value of 5 at the bridge. This represents the guns and battalions stationed there. If the Austrians capture the bridge (no French in this area) the Austrians have entered Lobau Island, a major blow to the French.
The DTTB map contains village / town areas and various types of road areas.
- Village / Town area count for one hour of movement.
- Red (primary) Roads take one (eine Stunde) or two hours (zwei Stunden) as labelled.
- Blue Dotted (secondary) roads represent journey overland. A roll of two through six with a six sided die allows the units to progress like a primary road. A roll of one means the units were not able to progress. With Corps / Korps leader in the stack, no roll for movement is necessary.
- Two hour roads have a dotted dividing line designated progress by the hour.
- Roads or villages / towns containing enemy units must be contested before moving to the next area. The moving player would progress units into the same road / village area as the enemy. The moving player may elect to stand or attack once in the same area as the enemy. If the moving player elects to stand, the non-moving player could elect to execute an opportunity attack. In this case the non-phasing player becomes the attacker for combat.
- There is no movement allowed in any areas but roads, villages and the Brücke zur Insel Lobau.
12.9 Brücke zur Insel Lobau
The Lobau bridge has the same rules as a village except is has its own inherent defence which may be added to any friendly troop values. If Austrian unit(s) enter the Lobau Bridge, the inherent defence is permanently eliminated.
12.10 Sequence of Play
At the beginning of each hour the DTTB is played before any French or Austrian 20 minute turns in the Deutsch – Wagram (DW) Game. This is due to the fact that troops may be moving from the DW map to the DTTB map or vice versa.
The French move first. They may move one area per hour. This could be into a village, a one hour road or half of a two hour road.
The France may move all, some or none of the voluntary movement (excludes PGD). Players may move into unoccupied or occupied areas. They may not move through enemy units. Friendly troops may move into any road area of friendly and enemy troops from an adjacent area. The French could move into a village from several uncontested road areas, for instance.
Then the Austrians move one area per hour. They may move all, some or none of the voluntary movement (excludes PGD). They may move into unoccupied area. They may not move through enemy units. Friendly troops may move into any road area of friendly and enemy troops from an adjacent area. The Austrians could assault a village from several uncontested road areas.
At the conclusion of all combat, any formations (troops) that are PGD from the previous hour check their morale. If they do not pass morale they retreat one area (toward their line of communication). See Morale – below. After this sequence is completed, the beginning of the hour starts on the DW board with the La Bataille sequence of play.
12.11 Combat
Combat for both sides is determined by the La Premier Melee Matrix. The results have the following definitions:
- AD: Attacker retreat one area and lose three increments.
- DD: Defender retreat one area and lose three increments.
- DR: Defender retreat one area, lose 5 increments and is PGD.
- DS: Defender retreat one area, lose 10 increments and is PGD.
- Blank: no result.
- x/y: triple the casualties listed but no retreat for either attacker or defender.
- *: Do not check morale.
There is no provision for disorder in DTTB.
Units that do not have a friendly or unoccupied area to retreat to must attack one of the blocking forces. If the attack does not lead to the retreat of a blocking force, the defender is eliminated (mort).
If a moving player enters an occupied space and does not attack the enemy unit, the non-moving player may execute an opportunity attack in the moving player's combat. Opportunity attacks use the same combat procedure.
Combat Odds are based on the value of the units in an area:
- Wrede's Bavarian Div. is worth 2.
- Each Saxon Division is worth 2; however, since the divisions of Dupas and Polenz start the game (PGD) each is worth ½. If any of this corps moves to the DW map, they are considered to be on morale level one.
- Each French and Austrian Division is worth 3.
- Each Aus. Grenadier and GD 1re Divisions are worth 4.
- GD 2e. is worth 5.
- Each Cavalry brigade is worth 1.
- Each Cavalry Division is worth 2.
- Austrian Advance Guard is worth 2.
- PGD Divisions / Brigades have a value of ½.
Example: Masséna's IV Corps has four infantry divisions (4x3 = 12) and two cavalry divisions (2x2 = 4). In one area this would be a strength of sixteen.
Combine all the eligible (stacking and leadership consideration) attacking forces in an area and compare this number to the total of the defending units in that area to establish an odds ratio.
The combat is further modified by the comparison of the cavalry superiority or French Gd. Artillery.
- The side with the most cavalry (based on worth) in a road area has an advantage of 3 to the die roll. Plus three to the attacker or minus three to the defender, depending on who has the superiority. The use of the cavalry advantage is optional.
- No cavalry advantage is calculated when units are in a village.
- Stacking Lauriston and the GD Art in any attack, adds three to the combat die roll of the French.
If cavalry or Garde Artillerie is used for this modification, at least one step of any loss would come from that a cavalry or Garde Artillerie unit. The increments lost by this cavalry or artillery would be subtracted from any regiment(s) or batteries at the owning player's discretion.
12.12 Morale
Units may become PGD only as a result of combat.
Morale recovery is based largely on the leader's morale value. Any one leader who commands the unit in the area may be used. The owning player has to roll under or equal to their leader's printed morale value. A roll of one will allow any unit to recovery even if the leader has no value or a negative number.
12.13 Combat Losses
Losses stay with the formation (Division / Brigade) no matter what map they are located on.
For every 9 increments lost, the division worth is reduced by 1 on the DTTB map.
The DW map works primarily at the regimental and battalion level. The DTTB map operates primarily at the divisional / cav. brigade level.
When operating on the DTTB map, any loses should be recorded by placing an increment loss counter on the Organizational Muster Chart.
If a division enters the DW map from the DTTB map, then the increment losses would be removed from the division's battalions, at the owning player's discretion.
Likewise if a division moves from the DW map to the DTTB map, the division must retain its increment losses, if any.
12.14 Map Interface and Movement
The DTTB map connects to the DW map at towns and roads, specifically at:
- Road to Breitenlee
- Road to Rassdorf
- Road to Glinzendorf
- Road to Kagran
- Esslinger Hof (adjacent to the map edge directly south of Neu Wirthaus)
When a unit is placed at one of these locations on the DTTB map as such a "connection", it would be at the beginning of the hour. At the 40 minute turn of that hour, the units on the DTTB map would be eligible to enter the DW map at regular movement. The division / leaders / brigade enters anywhere within 2 hexes of that point unless the connection is blocked by enemy units and/or zones of influence.
Divisions / Leaders / Cav. Brigades from the DW map may also enter the DTTB map at these same locations as detailed above. Those units must have a commanding leader and would be placed at a "connection" at the 40 minute mark.
Divisions are moved with their leader or replacement leader as an intact force. Divisions moving with less than 2/3 of their total force (increments) up to ½ are only worth ½ for combat, on the DTTB map. Below ½ their combat value is zero.
Then at the next hour they could move onto the DTTB map. If that path is blocked by enemy troops onto the DTTB map, then the DTTB map combat sequence would be used. The units moving from the DW map could only enter the DTTB map if the "blocking" enemy units were forced to retreat. The troops moving from the DW map would then enter the area. Otherwise they may not.
12.15 Involuntary Movement To and From the DTTB Map
It is possible that French units would rout (PGD) off of the DW map and onto the DTTB map.
Units should rout in the direction of:
- Maps 1, 2, 4 or 5 – to Rassdorf.
- Rassdorf to the Brücke zur Insel Lobau.
- Maps 3, 6 to Glinzendorf then to Esslinger Hof.
- Esslinger Hof to the Brücke zur Insel Lobau.
- Neu Wirthaus, then to Groß Enzersdorf.
- Groß Enzersdorf to the Brücke zur Insel Lobau.
Routed (PGD) French divisions / brigades on the DTTB map would move toward the Brücke zur Insel Lobau at one area per hour. Once the units reach the Brücke zur Insel Lobau they are eliminated from play.
Austrian divisions and brigades could rout (PGD) from the DTTB map to the DW map.
Units should rout back along their line of communication; the way they entered the DTTB map:
- Back to Kagran.
Austrian units on the DW map rout toward their line of communications. Where possible to the northern edge. Secondarily to the western edge. Units that rout off of the western or northern edge are eliminated.
Movement on the DTTB map is by the hour, therefore all morale checks on this map would be hourly, at the end of each hour the PDG units would move, after other movement and combat.
Individual battalions and regiments that rout to the DTTB map have no combat value, whether routed or in good order, until they return to the DW map or are combined with ½ of their division on the DTTB map. If they are attacked by enemy divisions / brigades, these singular battalions, regiments are eliminated.
Routing battalions / regiments may occupy the same area as other friendly troops with no adverse effects to their morale. This is because of the size of the area.
Units in good order may move through friendly PGD units in an area with no adverse effects to morale, stacking or movement.
Once battalions / regiments recover they are allowed to move back to the DW map subject to the same movement restrictions. They have no combat value while on the DTTB map.
12.16 Morale Effects on the French Army
If the following villages / towns are captured for one complete hour, the French Imperial Army's morale is worsened until the village or bridge is retaken (cleared of Austrian Units). The effect is felt at the beginning of the next hour from the time it was held by the Austrians. Thus all French units on the D-W map would be affected.
- Aspern: plus one to all French unit's morale.
- Essling: plus three to all French unit's morale.
- Groß Enzersdorf: plus 6 to all French unit's morale.
- If the Austrians capture the Lobau Bridge area, there is plus 12 to all French units morale.
Capture means your units with no enemy units in the area for a complete turn. If you push someone out in combat they will have one more hour turn to retake the area.
