Preparation

  1. Place the resources and Terraforming tiles in the center of the playing area to form a common pool. Terraforming tiles are not supposed to run out, but if they do, use any suitable component as a replacement.
  2. Collectively decide whether you want to play with the A- or B-side of the Starting Province cards. Then, deal a number of random Starting Province cards to the center of the playing area with the chosen side face up. Give one Scoring Summary card and Player Aid card face up to each player.
  3. Shuffle the Map cards and deal 6 cards face down to each player as their starting hand. Do not show these to the other players. Place the remaining Map cards in the center of the playing area, forming a draw pile.
  4. The player who most recently bathed is the first player.
  5. See page 7 for optional rules.

You're now ready to play the game.

Resources, production squares and factories

  • Resources: blue, brown, grey and purple.
  • Production symbols: a blue, brown, grey or purple symbol, each matching one resource color.
  • Factory symbols: a blue, brown, grey or purple symbol, each matching one resource color.
  • Production square and Factory square: the two square types printed on Map cards.

Starting Province Selection

Starting with the player to the right of the first player and going counterclockwise, each player:

  • Chooses one of the Starting Province cards in the center of the playing area and places it in front of them. This is the first card in their map.
  • Places a matching resource on each Production square on their chosen Starting Province card.
  • Chooses a Map card from their hand and places it in front of them, above their map. This card is in their pick box.

Playing the Game

The game is played over 12 rounds. Each round consists of a Selection Phase and a Map Phase.

Selection Phase (3-5 Players)

In the Selection Phase, starting with the first player and going clockwise, each player takes a Map card from a player's pick box by choosing one of the following four options:

  • Discard a resource from your map. Take a card from any player's pick box and replace it with any Map card from your hand.
  • Take the card from the pick box of the player on your left and replace it with a Map card from your hand with a higher number than the Map card you took.
  • Take the card from your own pick box and replace it with any Map card from your hand.
  • Take the card from the pick box of the player on your right and replace it with a Map card from your hand with a lower number than the Map card you took.

Place the Map card you took next to your map. You will add the card to your map in the Map phase.

Once each player has taken a Map card and placed it next to their map, this phase ends.

Exception: In the final round, each player must choose the card in their own pick box. They do not replace it with a Map card in their hand as their hand will be empty.

Selection Phase for 2 Players

At the start of the first Selection phase, take the top two Map cards from the draw pile and place each card face up between the two players, one to the right of the first player and one to the left.

The Map card placed to the right of the first player is treated as being in the pick box of a player on their right (and on the other player's left).

The Map card placed to the left of the first player is treated as being in the pick box of a player on their left (and on the other player's right).

In a 2-player game, the only way a player may take the Map card from their opponent's pick box is by choosing the option where they must discard a resource.

Otherwise follow the selection phase rules for 3-5 players.

Selection Phase Variants

If you are familiar with Honshu, Hokkaido or Shikoku, you may choose to replace the Selection Phase in Kyushu with the Trick-Taking Phase from Honshu or with Drafting Phase from Hokkaido. Or you could also use the Shikoku Selection Phase. You can use different Phases no matter what game you play.

Map Phase

In the Map Phase, players simultaneously expand their maps by placing the card they selected in the previous Selection Phase.

Each player must place their Map card in their respective map in such a way that at least one square of the new card is either on top of or hidden under a previously placed Map card, and at least one square of the new card remains visible. Cards may be placed horizontally or vertically. Four or more Map cards may be arranged in such a way that there is a "hole" created between them.

Production Squares

A single matching resource is placed on each Production square of the newly placed Map card. If a player places a card on top of a Production square which still has a resource, that resource is discarded to the common pool.

Terraforming

At any time during each Map phase, you may terraform one Fallow square (see page 6) on your map. This may be done before or after your new Map card has been placed. To do so you must discard 2 resources from your map. Then, choose one of the two discarded resources and depending on its color:

  • If it is blue, place a lake Terraforming tile on the Fallow.
  • If it is brown, place a town Terraforming tile on the Fallow.
  • If it is gray, place a forest Terraforming tile on the Fallow.
  • If it is purple, place a hot spring Terraforming tile on the Fallow.

For the remainder of the game, the Terraforming tile counts as the corresponding square for all placement and scoring purposes. Town, forest and hot spring Terraforming tiles may be covered up during future Map Phases, in which case return the tile back to the common pool.

Lake Squares

Lake squares must always be visible and may never be under other cards.

Consecutive Rounds

After all players have completed the Map Phase, begin the next round with a new Selection Phase.

At the end of the sixth round, deal six Map cards from the draw pile face down to each player as their new hand.

After 12 rounds the game ends and the final scoring takes place.

Consecutive Rounds (2 Players)

At the end of the sixth round, discard the Map cards in the middle pick boxes and replace them with the top two Map cards from the draw pile. Otherwise follow the rules for 3-5 players.

Summary of Terrain Squares

Each square on a Map card is one of the following types:

  • Production squares: During the Map Phase, each new Production square receives a resource of the same color from the common pool. These resources may be used for terraforming during the map phase, or may be placed on matching factories during the final scoring.
  • Factory: During final scoring, each Factory square may have a resource of the same color from your map placed on it. Factories in Kyushu are split into two squares:
    • For a single square factory the resource is worth 2 points.
    • For a Factory square that is part of a dual square factory of two different colors the resource is worth 3 points.
    • For a Factory square that is part of a dual square factory of the same color the resource is worth 4 points.
  • Forest: In the final scoring, each visible Forest square is worth 2 points.
  • Fallow: Fallows may be terraformed during the Map phase, but otherwise have no effect during the game. In the case of a tie in the final scoring, the player with the most non-terraformed Fallows visible on their map wins.
  • Lake: Lake squares must always remain visible and may never be covered by other Map cards. During final scoring, each contiguous orthogonally-adjacent area of Lake squares is scored: In each such area, the first Lake square is worth 0 points, and each consecutive Lake square is worth 3 points.
  • Hot Spring: Each Hot Spring is worth 1 point for each Forest square orthogonally or diagonally adjacent to it. The same Forest square may score for several Hot Springs.
  • Town: During final scoring, each Town square in your largest contiguous orthogonally-adjacent area of Town squares is worth 1 point.

Optional Rule: Most/Fewest Scoring Cards

During setup, add the following new step:

Shuffle the Most/Fewest Scoring cards and, for each player, place a random card with a random side face up between that player and the player to their left. Each player competes for two scoring cards (the card to their left and the card to their right).

After you have performed all other scoring at the end of the game, score each Most/Fewest scoring card:

  • Of the two players adjacent to the card, the player who has the Most/Fewest of the criteria shown on the card scores 3 points.
  • If both players are tied for Most/Fewest, each of them scores 1 point. For Most Scoring cards, the two players must have at least one of the criteria shown in order to score.

The Most/Fewest criteria, as printed on the cards:

  1. Most/Fewest Single Forest squares
  2. Most Lakes of at least 2 squares / Fewest Lake squares
  3. Most Fallow squares in your largest contiguous orthogonally-adjacent area of Fallow squares / Fewest single Fallow squares
  4. Most Towns of at least 2 squares / Fewest single Town squares
  5. Most Production squares in your largest contiguous orthogonally-adjacent area of production squares / Fewest single Production squares
  6. Most Factory squares in your largest contiguous orthogonally-adjacent area of Factory squares / Fewest single Factory squares
  7. Most terraforming tiles / Smallest difference between the max height and max width of the map.
  8. Most Factory squares with a resource on them / Fewest Production squares with a resource on them.

Optional Rule: Traveler

During setup each player receives two travelers.

After the 6th round, starting with the player on the right of the first player and going counterclockwise, each player may place one of their travelers along with a resource from their map onto a Hot Spring of either or both of the players either side of them. In final scoring each traveler is worth 1 point for each Forest surrounding that Hot Spring. A resource on a Hot Spring square may be used as if it were on a Production square: to pay for terraforming, or during final scoring on a Factory square.

Traveler (2 Players)

During setup each player receives one traveler instead of two which may be placed along with a resource onto a Hot Spring on their opponent's map after the 6th round. Otherwise follow the rules for 3-5 players.

Final Scoring

Players score their maps based on their visible Hot Springs, Forests, Towns, Lakes, and Factories.

  • Each Hot Spring is worth 1 point for each Forest square orthogonally or diagonally adjacent to it. The same Forest square may score for several Hot Springs.
  • For each Forest square, the players score 2 points.
  • Each Town square in your largest contiguous orthogonally-adjacent area of Town squares is worth 1 point.
  • The first Lake square of each lake area is worth 0 points and each consecutive square is worth 3 points.
  • For each Factory square that can be given a resource from a matching Production square, the players score 2 - 4 points. See page 6.
  • See page 7 for optional rules.

Example Score

Hot Springs: 3 (3 x 1 point) Forest: 18 (9 x 2 points) Towns: 3 (3 x 1 point) Lakes: 0 (0 x 3 points) Factories: 12 (2 x 4 points + 2 x 2 points)

Total: 36 points.

The largest contiguous orthogonally-adjacent area of Town squares is marked on the example map.
