Components
- 98 guess cards (numbered 1–14 per color*)
- 7 player boards
- 164 task cards (including 10 blank cards for your own tasks**)
- 8 number cards (front: 1–8; back: 9–14*)
- 48 point chips (values 1, 3, 5, 10, and 20)
- 64 letter tiles (22 vowels, 42 consonants)
* For this game you only need the guess and number cards numbered 1–8. You can also combine this set with the "Family Edition" set and play with up to 14 players. To do that, you'll also need the guess and number cards numbered 9–14. More details on this can be found from page 17.
** You can write your own tasks on the 10 blank cards and shuffle them in with the rest. If you want to play without them at first, just put them back in the box.
Setup
Each of you receives, in the color of your choice:
- the guess cards (exact number as described below);
- the board, which everyone places face up in front of themselves.
Lay out the number cards in the middle of the table as follows:
| Players | Number cards | Guess cards per player |
|---|---|---|
| 3–5 | 1–6 | 1–6 |
| 6 | 1–7 | 1–7 |
| 7 | 1–8 | 1–8 |
Lay out the task cards as a well-shuffled, face-down deck in the middle of the table.
Spread all 64 letter tiles face down in the middle of the table.
Place all point chips next to it, within easy reach for everyone.
Gameplay
The game runs over 6 rounds. Every round proceeds the same way. At the start, determine a first starting player, for example the player with the most vowels in their first and last name. The role of starting player then passes clockwise from round to round.
-
The starting player first shuffles the letter tiles in the middle of the table. Then, going around the table, they give every player (including themselves) one task card from the face-down deck. Watch out! Every player may only look at their own card!
-
Everyone takes 9 face-down letter tiles from the middle of the table: exactly 6 consonants (darker back) and 3 vowels (lighter back). Place your 9 letters face up next to your board.
-
Using these letters, form a word on your board that does not really exist, but that should fit your task as well as possible.
Example: If your task is "Figure from Greek mythology," you could play "ÄTOS" or "GLIA," but not "EROS" or "GAIA" or …
More rules for forming words can be found from page 13.
-
Once you're done, turn your board 180°, so your fellow players can better read the word. Watch out! Until the evaluation (step 9), you may not read your own word aloud or give any other hints about it, because doing so might give away too much! You may already return your unused letters, face down, to the middle of the table.
-
Give your task card, still face down, back to the starting player. Once they have received all the cards back, they add one or more task cards face down from the draw pile:
- With 3 to 5 players, enough that they have 6 cards in total;
- with 6 or 7 players, exactly 1 more card, so that they have 7 or 8 cards in total.
End of the Game
The game ends after 6 rounds. Whoever now has the most points is the winner. In case of a tie, there are multiple winners.
Tips for Forming Words
-
To form your word you may use as many of your 9 letters as you like — so just one, a few, or even all of them. You may also form multiple words, by leaving small gaps between the corresponding letters.
-
The word(s) you form must not exist in the German language. Likewise, any kind of near-copy, abbreviation, or translation of your own task is not allowed.
Example 1: If your task is "Fine perfume," you may not play "ÄDEL" or "PAVUN" (= near-copies of the task), nor anything like "VRAKRONS" (= translation of the task). However, things like "DOOFD X" or "XANEL" or "O TOLÄD" … would be allowed.
Example 2: If your task is "French wine variety," you may not play "PHRANS" or "VAIN" or "WÄ"; things like "SABLY" or "BUKNDÄ" … would be allowed.
-
When forming words, always remember that in "Krazy Wordz" it's first and foremost about creativity, imagination, and above all fun. And only secondarily about victory points and competition. So feel free to "cheat a little," but don't form overly uncreative, humorless words!
-
Always remember that before the evaluation you may not give any hints at all about your own word, in particular not by pronouncing it aloud.
-
When placing your guess cards, try not to think out loud. A sentence like "Does 'GROGUX' sound like a programming language, or more like a toilet cleaner?" shows your fellow players that neither of those is your current task.
Combining with the Family Edition
You can also play both versions together, for up to 14 players! To do this, during setup you only need to pay attention to the following things:
-
Always lay out exactly as many number cards as you have players (so with 8 players, cards 1–8, or with 12 players, cards 1–12, etc.). The numbers higher than 8 are printed on the back of the number cards.
-
Use the guess cards that correspond to the number cards in play.
-
Always set out all 128 letter tiles. When taking your letters, you only need to make sure you always take either 9 blue or 9 purple tiles — otherwise you might end up with too many of the same letter.
-
Shuffle all the task cards together and set them out as a deck. (Later you can sort the cards back apart again by their different card fronts.)
-
Use all the point chips and set them out in a few piles on the table. (Later you can sort the chips back apart again by their different number colors.)
-
Watch out! There is a point limit! If you play with more than 7 players, you should limit the maximum number of points a player can win with their word to 6.
Example: If you did your job well and your word is correctly guessed by nine fellow players, you don't receive 9, but "only" 6 victory points! But that's still a lot …
All other rules remain the same as in the game with up to 7 players.
