Components

Six boxes, 100 cards, 300 tokens, and a pad for marking answers.

Quick Rules

For more details on the rules, see the full rules below. The quick rules cover one game.

  1. Each player chooses a box (the colour of your box will be your colour for the whole game) and takes a sheet on which to note your answers. Make sure your box is closed. You cannot see what is inside it.
  2. The player whose birthday is the most recent plays first. The questions will be put to that player. We will call them Stéphane. All players write Stéphane's first name at the top of the first column of their sheet.
  3. The player seated to the right of Stéphane draws a card and asks Stéphane the first question on the card, replacing the blank space in the question with Stéphane.
  4. Stéphane writes their answer in secret on their sheet, in the column corresponding to their name. The other players write in the "Stéphane" column of their sheet the answer they think Stéphane will give.
  5. Continue until Stéphane has answered the 5 questions on the card.
  6. Now reread the first question aloud. Everyone gives their answer, and Stéphane gives their answer last.
  7. If the answer you gave matches what Stéphane answered, take two tokens and slide them into your box, into the opening whose colour is the one chosen by Stéphane at the start of the game. Stéphane takes one token and slides it into their box, into the opening corresponding to your colour.
  8. If the answer you gave does not match Stéphane's, but is the same as that of one (or several) other player(s), you win one token, because although you did not find the right answer, you are in tune with another player. Note: if your answer is correct and other players also have the correct answer, you do not get an extra point, because you gave the same answer as another player.
  9. Review the 5 questions that Stéphane answered.
  10. When all scores have been recorded, Stéphane takes the next card and asks the 5 questions on it to the player seated to their left.
  11. Continue until all players have answered a series of questions.
  12. Open your boxes and see who is the person you know best (largest number of tokens) and who is the person you should get to know better (smallest number of tokens). The player with the most tokens in total is on the same wavelength as most of their friends. That player wins the game.

Get Ready

  1. Each player takes a box and chooses the colour they want. Slide the cover so that the columns (used for counting points) are covered. You will only open them at the end of the game.
  2. Detach a sheet from the pad to note your answers and place it in front of you.
  3. Shuffle the cards and make a pile within everyone's reach.
  4. Each player takes a pencil (or shares one; this will already help create links!).
  5. Put the tokens back in the place provided in the game box. You are ready to set off to discover your friends!

Diagram labels: "Truth box" (boîtier vérité), "Sliding cover" (couvercle coulissant), "Scoring column" (colonne pour le décompte des points).

In Search of the Truth

The first question will be put to the person whose birthday is the most recent. All players write that person's name at the top of column 1. If you are seated to the right of this person, take the first card from the pile and ask them question no. 1, replacing the blank space with their first name.

For example: Stéphane had his birthday yesterday, so it is his turn to start. He is seated to your left. The first question on the card you drew is: "In a two-course menu, is _________ going to choose a starter or a dessert?" Stéphane secretly writes his answer to the question in column 1, next to the number 1. The other players and you write secretly in column 1 the answer you think Stéphane gave.

Continue asking all the questions on the card, one after the other, to Stéphane, and note the answers as you go.

Note: if you ask a question for which none of the given answers fits, note it. For example, if you ask a vegetarian how they like their steak cooked, write on your sheet that they are vegetarian.

Who Do You Really Know?

Once you have gone through the 5 questions on the card, the show begins. Re-ask the first question. The player seated to the left of Stéphane announces the answer they wrote on their sheet. Then it is the turn of the player seated to their left to announce their answer, and so on until everyone except Stéphane has answered.

Now it is Stéphane's turn to lift the veil on a part of their life by revealing their answer. Count your points (see "Scoring" below) and slide the tokens into your box. Repeat for each of the five questions.

It is then the turn of the person seated to Stéphane's left to answer questions. Stéphane takes the first card from the pile and asks them the 5 questions, while everyone writes their answer on their sheet as before. Continue until all players have answered a series of 5 questions.

Scoring

Who will you have the most affinity with? For each correct answer, or answer identical to that given by another player, you receive one or more tokens that you slide into your box. Refer to the table below to find your score.

Your answerNumber of tokens you win
Correct answer (you guessed the answer given by the player to whom the question was asked)Slide 2 tokens into the opening of your box whose colour is that of the player whose answer you guessed. (You win no other tokens.)
Wrong answer, but your answer is the same as that of one (or several) other player(s)Slide 1 token into the opening of your box whose colour is that of that player (or those players). Example: if your answer is the same as that of the player who chose a blue box, insert a token into the blue opening of your box. (Note: you do not win these tokens if your answer is correct.)
Wrong answer, and you are the only one to have given itSorry, you do not win any token. You may have better luck with the next answer.
The questions were intended for you, and your answers were guessedSlide into your box 1 token per player who guessed your answer. (Remember: 1 token in the opening corresponding to the colour of each player.)

Illustration caption: you have the red box. The player who answered the series of questions has the blue box. You guessed their answer. You therefore win two tokens, which you insert into the blue opening of your box.

In Complete Agreement

Once everyone has been thrust into the spotlight and has revealed a little of their personality by answering their series of questions, the moment of truth comes. You will be able to take stock and find out which of your friends is most in tune with you, and with whom you should get to know better.

Slide the cover of your box to the left to see how many tokens are in each of the columns. Count them up. Then, one after the other, announce the colour that obtained the largest number of tokens and the colour that obtained the fewest. They correspond respectively to the people you know the best and the least.

Illustration caption: the score scale ("échelle de score") is shown on the printed sheet as a graphic, with a magnifying-glass detail on the box columns.

Now find out who, around the table, knows the most people. Add up all the tokens in your box, using the score scale. The player with the highest score has the best perception of the different personalities who took part in the game, and has rightly earned the win.

Did you lose? It is up to you to reverse the trend by getting to know better those whose answers you found most difficult to guess. That could help you next time!

Playing for Two

The rules are the same as described above, except for the questions: you ask 3 series of five questions to your partner.

Scoring: the player who asked the question receives 1 token for each correct answer. The player who answered the question receives no tokens.

Note: replace questions about people who are "present" or "around this table" with "people you both know".

Packing Away

When you have finished playing, completely remove the cover of each box, remove the tokens it contains, and put them back in the bag.
