Object of the Game

On an 8x7 board, players alternate turns. On your turn you must either move one of your pieces or pass your ball. The object is to get your ball to your opponent's back line.

Move Notation

Moves are written as <from>-<to>, where the squares are given as file and rank coordinates. Files run from a to g and ranks run from 1 to 8. Passing the ball is written in the same way, possibly with additional -<to> squares added at the end.

Initial Layout

The board has files A to G (left to right) and ranks 1 to 8 (bottom to top).

  • The Ohs player (O) has four pieces on B1, C1, E1 and F1, and her ball (O) on D1. She attempts to move the ball to row 8.
  • The Eks player (X) has four pieces on B8, C8, E8 and F8, and his ball (X) on D8. He attempts to move the ball to row 1.
  • Squares A1, G1, A8 and G8 are empty, and the rest of the board is empty.

Ineligible receivers are marked on the diagrams as ~o~ and ~x~.

Movement

Moves and passes must satisfy the following:

  • Pieces move like chess knights to any empty square.
  • The piece with the ball may not move.
  • The ball may be passed in a straight, unobstructed line to any of your pieces. The ball may be passed horizontally, vertically or diagonally.
  • You may pass the ball as many times as you like on a given turn so long as no piece touches the ball more than once.
  • When a piece passes the ball, it becomes an ineligible receiver and may not receive further passes (on later turns). An ineligible receiver becomes eligible to receive passes after it moves.
  • If your opponent's previous move results in one of her pieces being adjacent to your ball, you must pass if you can. If you cannot pass, then you are free to move a piece. If one of your opponent's pieces is next to your ball, but it did not just move there, then it does not force you to pass.
  • You may not move so as to recreate an earlier board position.

Sample Game Opening

The printed sample is shown as a sequence of diagrams. The moves are given below in order, with the Eks player's move in the left column and the Ohs player's move in the right column.

TurnEks (X)Ohs (O)
1c8-b6e1-f3
2d8-b6d1-f1-f3
  • Turn 1: Eks moves the knight from C8 to B6. Ohs moves the knight from E1 to F3.
  • Turn 2: Eks passes the ball from D8 to the piece on B6 (a diagonal pass through C7). Ohs passes the ball from D1 to the piece on F1 (horizontally, through E1), then passes it again from F1 to the piece on F3 (vertically, through F2). The ball then sits with the Ohs player's piece on F3.
