Object of the game

Whoever casts the highest-scoring combinations with the 5 animal dice in the course of the game is the winner.

Preparing for the game

At the outset each player is given a sheet from the Kniffel® notepad and takes a pencil. Put the dice and dice cup on the table and then you can get going!

How to play

The game is played in a clockwise direction. The youngest player starts.

Rules for casting the dice

  • You can cast the dice up to three times on each turn.
  • The first time you cast them you use all five dice.
  • The second and third time you cast them, you can decide how many you want to cast. The die or dice you wish to keep you put on one side and continue casting with the rest of the dice.
  • Prior to each time you cast the dice you may pick up the dice you have set aside and cast them again.
  • Of course, you can stop casting the dice after the first or second cast if you have already cast the right combination of animals.

How to write the scores

In the course of the game each player writes down his scores. One sheet is sufficient for 5 games of Kniffel® (5 columns). Younger children who are not yet able to add up and write very well must be helped by one of the older players.

  • At the latest when the dice have been cast for the third time you must enter your score in the appropriate box on the Kniffel® notepad. The rules for this are as follows: You do not have to fill in the boxes from the top to the bottom. If possible, you enter the combination that will give you the highest score.
  • During a game you may only write something in each box once.
  • If you have cast a combination of animals, which you cannot enter into any of the boxes, you must write 0 points in any of the boxes that are still free.

Combinations of animals

1. Counting animals of a kind

The first six boxes on the Kniffel® notepad require you to get as many animals of a kind as possible.

Example: [dice illustration]

With this result from casting the dice you can enter 3 points in the 'Duck' line.

Caution: The same applies for the 'Lion', 'Mouse', 'Cat', 'Dog' and 'Elephant' lines.

2. Three of a kind

If you have cast three animals of a kind (no matter which kind of animal), you can write down 2 points.

Example: [dice illustration]

3. Two pairs

If you have cast two pairs of animals of a kind (no matter which kind of animal), you can write down 3 points.

Example: [dice illustration]

4. A triplet and a pair

If you have cast three animals of a kind (no matter which kind of animal) and one pair of animals (no matter which animal), you can write down 4 points.

Example: [dice illustration]

5. Five different kinds of animals

If you have cast five different kinds of animal, you can write down 5 points.

Example: [dice illustration]

6. Animal Kniffel®: Five animals of a kind

If you manage to cast five animals of a kind (no matter which kind of animal), you can write down 10 points for the Animal Kniffel®.

Example: [dice illustration]

End of game

The game ends when all players have filled in the 11 boxes in a column, i.e. when everybody has had eleven turns. Now everybody counts up their points. The player with the highest score wins.
