Game Overview

Welcome to the messiest race in history! In Kitchen Rally, champions line up to prove who's the fastest racer in the Kitchen Realm.

Race through stages, out-scribble and out-roll your rivals, and claim the crown of Kitchen Rally!

Experience a Real Race

Everyone races simultaneously and in real time.

Navigate through all checkpoints, avoid dangerous terrain or take risks, find shortcuts and use special locations to gain an advantage.

Finish first and immediately start rolling additional time penalties for your opponents until they finish too.

Tally the Chaos!

Review your race route, check damage on your kart and then compare who made the best navigational decision and was fastest through the race.

After 4 races sum your time. Whoever has the fastest time across all races wins the championship. Unless you've exploded.

Are you the one?

Can you steer through grease puddles and mold fields taking the smoothest path? Or will you speed for the first-place finish and cackle as your rivals skid, crash, and crumble behind you? Grab your pen and get ready.

This kitchen race is about to get messy!

What's in the Box?

  • 18 Double-sided Erasable Maps
  • 6 Erasable Character Boards
  • 6 Erasable Markers
  • 16 Location Tokens
  • 12 Event Cards
  • 1 Race Board
  • 1 Bag
  • 1 Penalty Die
  • 1 Damage Die
  • 2 Appendix Sheets
  • 1 Rulebook

Setup

  1. Choose a Map where the Championship will take place and give each player a copy of that Map.

Each Map has its own special rules and increases in difficulty, from 1 (easy) to 6 (difficult). If it is your first time playing, we recommend starting with Map Number 1 (see Appendix A).

  2. Shuffle the Character Boards and let each player select a character at random. They all follow the same rules.

  3. Take your Character Board and 1 Erasable Marker.

  4. Place all the Location Tokens in the Bag and Place the Bag in the centre of the table.

  5. Place the Race Board in the centre of the table.

  6. Place both dice beside the Race Board.

  7. Shuffle the deck of Event Cards and put it face down in the centre of the table. (First time playing? Ignore the Event Cards.)

How to Play

In Kitchen Rally, you compete in a Championship that lasts 4 Races. Each Race has the same 3 phases:

  • Race Setup
  • Race
  • Time-Check

You win the Championship if you have the fastest time after completing all 4 Races.

Race Setup

  1. Reveal an Event.

    • Draw the top card of the Event Deck.
    • Place it face-up next to the Race Board.
    • Read aloud an Event Card rule from the Appendix B Sheet.

First time playing? Ignore the Event Cards.

  2. Reveal the Checkpoints.

    • Draw 3 Location Tokens from the bag.
    • Place them all on the Race Board, one in each section:
      • A. The Starting Point
      • B. The Checkpoint
      • C. The Finishing Point
    • Each player marks the checkpoints on their Map.

Race

As soon as all players are ready, count down: 3... 2... 1... Race!

Race Start

Everyone races simultaneously and in real time:

  • Take your Marker and start drawing a line on your map.
  • Your goal is to draw a line from the Start through the Checkpoint to the Finish (in this order).

Navigation Rules

You must follow the Navigation Rules below or suffer a penalty to your race time (see Navigation Error in Time Check, step 1):

  • You cannot draw through Terrain squares diagonally. Only horizontal or vertical lines are allowed.
  • You cannot retrace over a line that already exists but you can cross over an existing line.
  • You cannot pass through the Impassible [sic] Terrain squares (unless modified by an Event Card — A Soap Spill).
  • You must pass through the Checkpoints in the correct order. (Start, then Checkpoint, then Finish. Going Start to Finish and then to the Checkpoint breaks this rule.)
  • You must not skip any Checkpoints. (Going from Start straight to Finish breaks this rule.)

Finishing the Race

If you are first to complete the Race:

  1. Immediately grab the Penalty Die at the centre of the table and start rolling it as fast as you can.
  2. Add the results aloud to calculate the Penalty Time.
  3. Continue rolling to increase the Penalty Time until everyone has completed the race.

Other players who finish later:

  1. Declare they've finished!
  2. Then note their Penalty Time (the last number they heard the dice roller shout before they reached the Finishing Point).

Time Check

When the race ends, follow the steps below to determine the winner:

  1. Check for Navigation Errors.
  2. Calculate Terrain Changes.
  3. Determine who gets the Speed Bonus.
  4. Resolve Event effect (if you played with Events).
  5. Sum the Total Race Time.
  6. Resolve Damage taken on your route.

Anatomy of a Time Tracker

Each race is recorded on the Time Tracker on your Character Board. From top to bottom, the Time Tracker has:

  • Race number
  • Penalty Time
  • Terrain Change
  • Speed Bonus
  • Total time for race

1. Navigation Errors

If you broke any of the Navigation Rules (see Race, Navigation Rules), you got desperately lost on the route!

Do not calculate your Race Time. Instead, your Total Race Time will be the time of the slowest player increased by +20 Seconds.

2. Calculate Terrain Changes

Each time your path switches from one background Terrain Texture to another, it counts as +1 Second. See all Terrain Types on the Appendix A Sheet.

  • Add up all the Terrain Changes.
  • Record this time on your Time Tracker on your Character Board.

3. Determine Speed Bonus

The player (or players) with the lowest number of Terrain Changes gets the Speed Bonus.

  • Circle the Bonus on your Time Tracker.
  • Everyone else crosses out the Bonus on their Time Tracker.

The Speed Bonus is -2 seconds. The example shows that two players have the lowest number of Terrain Changes (16) and are both awarded the Speed Bonus, while a third player with 20 Terrain Changes crosses it out.

4. Resolve Event Effect

Each Event has a unique [sic] effect. They are explained on the Appendix B sheet — Event Cards.

  • Add any applicable Time Penalty and/or Damage to your Character Board.
  • Record the event time penalty and/or damage on your Time Tracker and Damage Tracker.

First time playing? Ignore the Event Cards.

5. Sum the Total Race Time

  • Add all the times together on your Time Tracker for this Race.
  • Record the total at the bottom of your Time Tracker.

The example shows a Penalty Time of +4, an Event time penalty of +6, Terrain Changes of +16 and a Speed Bonus of -2, for a Total Race Time of 24.

6. Resolve Damage taken on your route

Every Map is full of Dangerous Obstacles. Crossing them might open a promising shortcut, but they might also damage your Champion's kart.

  • Roll the Damage Die for each Dangerous Obstacle you trampled over.
  • For each Damage Symbol rolled, tick one box in your Damage Tracker on your Character Board.

The Damage Die shows 0 damage, 1 damage, or 2 damage per roll. The example shows 6 Dangerous Obstacles on the player's route, and they rolled the Damage Die six times, resulting in 5 damage.

Damage Penalties increase your time! At the end of the championship, your total time increases by +5 seconds for each Red Box ticked on your Damage Tracker.

If your Damage Tracker is completely filled in and you have ticked the "Retire the Car" box, your Champion's kart retires from the race. You are out of the game and cannot win!

Preparation for another Race

Get ready for the next Race:

  1. Erase your drawn route from the Map.
  2. Set aside the current Event Card and Location tokens. (you can't use them in Championship anymore).
  3. Put the Penalty Die back in the center of the table.
  4. Start the next Race (see Race Setup).

If you already played four races, proceed to the End of the Game instead.

End of the Game

All four races are finished and it's time to see who has won the Championship:

  1. Sum up the Total Time for all four Races.
  2. Add +5 Seconds for each ticked Red Damage Penalty slot.
  3. The player with the lowest Total Time is the winner and becomes the new Ruler of the Kitchen Realm!

In the event of a tie, the player with the least damage wins. If there is still a tie, the victory is shared.

The example shows the player has 98 seconds across all four races and 10 seconds for crossing 2 Red Damage Penalties. The total time for their championship is 108 seconds.
