Object of the Game

Players use light, dark, and red marbles that they place and move on the gameboard. But because of the subsequent turning and tilting of the gameboard, the positions of the marbles can change.

The first player to have a row of four marbles in his own color after the turning of the board wins the game.

Game Materials

  • 1 square gameboard made of solid beechwood, treated with protective oils
  • 1 dark wooden bar
  • 20 marbles (8x light, 8x dark, 4x red)

Set-Up of the Game

Put the gameboard on the dark wooden bar so that one side is tilting in one direction. Place the four red marbles in the designated double spaces (see illus. 1). Because of the slope, they roll to the lowest point of the space.

Players agree on which color to take, and each player gets the marbles of his color. The player with the light marbles begins.

This Is How You Play

The players alternate taking turns.

Each game turn consists of two actions that have to be carried out in this order:

  1. Place one of your own marbles or move one of your own marbles or remove a red marble.
  2. Rotate the gameboard.

Action 1

As the active player, you choose one of the options for your turn:

Place: Place one of your marbles that is not yet on the gameboard on one of the four outer double spaces (see illus. 2 and illus. 3A), if there is an unoccupied position; if all positions of these spaces are already occupied by marbles, you may place the new marble on any unoccupied position on the gameboard.

Move: Move one of your own marbles one position ahead, parallel to the diagonals of the gameboard (see illus. 3B). In doing so, you may move the marble only onto an unoccupied position of an adjacent double space, but not within the same double space.

It is permissible that the marble, after being placed, rolls onto the other position of the same double space.

Remove a red marble: Take any red marble off the board (see illus. 3C). It is permissible that the other marble on this double space rolls onto the former position of the red marble after that. The removed red marble does not come back into play.

Illus. 3: Possible game turns for action 1.

Action 2

Take the gameboard into your hand, rotate it and put it back onto the wooden bar so that a different edge is resting on the table; the bar stays put. Now the board is tilting in a different direction, and with this, the positions of the marbles might change. It is up to you how far you rotate the board; it may not be rotated back to the side used in the just-finished turn.

Illus. 4: Rotate by one, two or three quarter turns.

End of the Game

If, after either of the two players has rotated the gameboard, the gameboard shows a continuous horizontal, vertical or diagonal row of at least four marbles in one player color, the player of this color wins the game. Rows that were formed before the rotation do not lead to victory.

If rows of both colors are lying on the gameboard, the player who just rotated the board wins.

A player loses if he can no longer carry out action 1 – i.e., he has no marble left to place, he cannot move, and there is no red marble left on the board.

Warning
