Components
- 1 bell
- 110 Qualifier cards
- 1 bag
- 1 rulebook
Setup
Deal 5 cards to each player.
Goal
The goal of the game is to find qualifiers that match the object chosen by the speaker.
The first player who has only ONE card left wins the round.
Gameplay
A first player, chosen at random, names an object.
All players who think they have a card that matches tap the bell as quickly as possible.
Then the fastest player proposes their qualifier.
- If the qualifier is accepted, the player discards their card. They become the new speaker and propose a new object.
- If a player challenges the qualifier, a show-of-hands vote takes place.
- If there is a majority of "Against" votes, the player who proposed the qualifier discards their card and draws 2 new cards.
- If there is a majority or a tie of "For" votes, the player who called the vote takes 2 penalty cards.
Then the next player who taps the bell proposes their qualifier.
If no one wants to or is able to propose a qualifier, the speaker discards a card and proposes a new object.
Clarifications:
- The speaker cannot play one of their own cards!
- Players are entitled to only one qualifier proposal per object.
- A speaker who gives an object that has already been named during this round or a previous round takes 2 penalty cards.
- Instead of proposing a qualifier, a player may discard a card that is too difficult for them, in order to take 2 cards in replacement.
- If a speaker cannot find an object to propose, they may look at the side of the box.
Following Rounds and End of the Game
A game of Kalifiko is played over 3 rounds. The player who won the round (with only one card in hand) chooses the variant for the next round.
The player who wins the most rounds wins the game. In case of a tie, the winner of the last round wins the game.
Clarifications:
- At the end of a round, players are free to keep all or part of their hand.
- Then, they draw cards until they have 5.
Variants
Kalifiko Plus
The rules are identical, but the object proposed by the speaker must always match the previous winning qualifier.
For the first round, draw a card from the deck at random.
For example, if the previous qualifier was "Flies", the player must propose an object that flies as the new object: an airplane, a hot-air balloon, etc.
Kalifiko Minus
The rules are identical, but the object proposed by the speaker may in no case match the previous winning qualifier.
For the first round, draw a card from the deck at random.
For example, if the previous qualifier was "Costs more than 10,000 €", the player must therefore propose an object that does not cost more than 10,000 €: an iron, a board game, etc.
Objecto
In this variant, players no longer look for qualifiers but for objects! The round begins with no cards.
The goal is to win 4 cards.
The speaker draws two Qualifier cards and reads them. The first player who taps the bell and gives an object that matches both qualifiers wins 1 of the 2 cards and becomes the new speaker.
For example, the qualifiers are "Made of metal" and "Used every day"; one could for instance propose a car, a knife...
Clarifications:
- Players are entitled to only one proposal.
- The speaker may not propose an object!
- A player who gives an object that has already been named loses 2 cards from their hand.
Objecto Plus and Minus
The rule is identical to the Objecto variant, except that the first qualifier is reversed. The first player who taps the bell and gives an object that does not match the first qualifier, but does match the second, wins 1 of the 2 cards and becomes the new speaker.
For example, the qualifiers are "Contains fabric" and "Noisy". The object must therefore not contain fabric, but make noise. A trumpet, a drum kit, a car horn are all correct.
Objecto for Young Children
The speaker draws and reads a single Qualifier card. The first player who taps the bell and gives an object that matches the card wins it and becomes the new speaker.
For example, if the qualifier is "Rechargeable", the answers a mobile phone or a laptop computer are correct.
Tournament Scoring System
At the end of each round, each player scores one point per card remaining in hand.
Attention: for the Objecto variants, one point is deducted per card won.
The player with the fewest points at the end of the game wins the game.
