26 Letter Cards

1 Hourglass

1 Rulebook

The Goal of the Game

Your goal is to find as many things in the picture starting with the current letter as you can, before time runs out!

Game Preparation

Assemble the cardboard easels and give one to each player. If there are more than 4 players, split up into groups of 2 or 3 players facing each easel.

Split the 20 Picture boards into four groups of five boards, with pictures numbered 1 to 10. Put one group on each easel.

Shuffle the Letter cards and place them face down in the middle of the table next to the hourglass.

Give each player a pencil and a sheet of paper.

Playing the Game

  1. Each turn begins with the players, as a group, choosing one picture to use, and placing their copy of that picture on their easels so it can be seen clearly.
  2. Then, the top Letter card and the hourglass are both turned over simultaneously. As soon as the card is turned over, the players try to find as many items as possible in the picture that begin with the letter on the Letter card before the hourglass runs out.
  3. Secretly write down the words for the items you find. Do not look at the other players' notes! The turn ends as soon as the hourglass runs out.
  4. At the end of the turn, each player reads aloud all the words they have written down and compares them to those found by the other players:
  • You score 3 points for each acceptable word that you were the only player to write down.
  • You score 1 point for each acceptable word that you and at least one other player wrote down.

One of the players is responsible for keeping track of each player's points on a separate sheet of paper.

After the scores are added up, set the picture you used aside and choose a new picture for the next turn. Then, start the next turn by turning over a new Letter card and the hourglass. Continue playing this way until the tenth and final turn, changing the picture and Letter card every turn.

Acceptable Words

By "acceptable words", we mean anything that is clearly identifiable in the picture. This can include specific words and generalizations. For example, a "car" could be seen as a particular type of vehicle (4x4, convertible, station wagon…). A "bridal veil" could be described by one of its components (fabric, lace…).

If an opponent asks, you must be able to show exactly where in the picture the contested word can be found.

Each word can only be used once: no repetitions are allowed (no singular and plural version, either). If the same word can identify several objects in the same picture, such as "Earth" the planet and "earth" meaning the ground, it can be written down more than once while still respecting the rule forbidding repetition.

Copying words from the texts or inscriptions on the pictures is not permitted.

Any ambiguous word can be accepted if the majority of players agree. In case of a tie, the word in question is considered invalid.

Winning the Game

The player with the most points at the end of the last turn wins the game!

Team Version

If you play with 4 to 12 players, you can form teams (from 2 teams of 2 players to 4 teams of 3 players). The scores of the players on the same team are added together at the end of each turn.

Authors' Suggestions

The length of the game can be modified by deciding on a different number of turns before starting.

For your first few games, you could agree to turn the hourglass over again to give the players more time. You can also remove the most difficult Letter cards.
