Components

  • 70 cards (front and back; sort them by their backs, see Setup)
  • 1 Coin Bonus card
  • 12 characters

Setup

  1. Sort the cards by their backs and arrange them into separate stacks.

  2. Shuffle each stack, then place them face down on the table next to each other. The number printed on the back of each stack shows how many cards it contains.

  3. Depending on the number of players, each player chooses a set number of characters:

    • 2 players: 4 characters
    • 3–4 players: 3 characters
    • 5 players: 2 characters

Place your chosen characters face up on the table in front of you. The choice of character has no impact on gameplay.

  4. Find the Coin Bonus card and set it aside. It is only used in the Advanced Variant rules described at the end of the manual.

Example 4-player setup.

Objective

Players compete to collect the most valuable items over the course of the game. Each item is worth a certain number of ducats. The player with the highest total of ducats at the end of the game wins.

How to Play

The youngest player takes the first turn. Play then continues clockwise.

On their turn, a player must perform one of two actions:

  1. Take Part in an Adventure OR
  2. Send Items to your Keep.

Action 1: Take Part in an Adventure

The player reveals the top card from any pile of their choice and resolves the effect shown on that card.

Items. When a player reveals an item card, they place it face up on the table in front of them, visible to all other players. The item's value in ducats is shown at the bottom of the card.

Items are not safe until the player sends them to your Keep (see: Send Items to your Keep).

Coin in Hand. Coin in Hand is treated as a regular item worth 1 ducat in the base game (see Advanced Variant, page 4).

The Underhanded Chamberlain. When a player reveals the Underhanded Chamberlain card, they must return their most valuable item on the table to the box. If multiple items share the highest value, the player chooses which one to discard. If the player has no items in front of them, nothing happens. After resolving the effect, return the card to the box.

Bandits. When a player reveals a Bandits card, they place it in front of them. A single Bandits card has no effect. However, if a player reveals a second Bandits card, they must return all items in front of them to the box. After resolving the effect, both Bandits cards are returned to the box. Bandits are dangerous in numbers!

The Thugs of Jomsborg. When a player reveals the Thugs of Jomsborg card, one of the following applies:

  1. If the player has no Bandits card in front of them: All items in front of that player are returned to the box. If the player has no items, nothing happens and the Thugs of Jomsborg card is then returned to the box.
  2. If the player already has a Bandits card in front of them: The thugs and bandits fight each other instead of robbing the player. Both cards are returned to the box and the player loses nothing.

Action 2: Send Items to your Keep

Instead of revealing a new card, a player may send all items currently in front of them to their Keep.

To do so, they place all their items onto one of their characters.

  • These cards must be placed face down in a stack on that character. No player may look at them for the rest of the game.
  • Important: Items can only be placed on a character who does not already have cards on them. Example: In a 3-player game each player has 3 characters, meaning they can send items to their keep up to 3 times throughout the game.
  • Once items have been placed on a character, they are safe and cannot be taken by any means.
  • Note: If a player sends items to their Keep while they have a Bandit card in front of them, the Bandit card is returned to the box. The bandits retreat to their camp, grumbling, with nothing left to steal.

End of the Game

Once a player has items on all of their characters, they are out of the game. The remaining players continue playing.

The game ends when one of the following occurs:

  1. Every player has items on all of their characters OR
  2. All cards in each stack have been revealed.

Note: If the game ends by condition 2, players who still have items in front of them may send them to their Keep before final scoring.

Each player adds up the ducat value on all the face down cards on their characters. The player with the most ducats wins. In the event of a tie, the tied player who sent the most items to the Keep wins. If still tied, the players share the victory.

Example: A player sent 5 items to their Keep worth a total of 22 ducats (10 + 5 + 5 + 1 + 1).

Hint

Each stack contains one of each of the following: a Thugs of Jomsborg card, a Bandits card, a Underhanded Chamberlain card, a Coin in Hand card, and an item worth 10 ducats. The remaining cards are coins and items worth 5 ducats. Keep track of which cards have already been revealed. Choose stacks where you can avoid threats and maximize your chances of finding valuable items.

Advanced Variant

The base game can be expanded with the following additional rules. Recommended for players already familiar with the base game.

Coin Bonus

At the end of the game, the player with the most coins wins the Coin Bonus card worth 10 ducats.

Coin in Hand

Coin in Hand cards have an additional effect: When a player reveals the Coin in Hand card, they choose any other player and take all coins in front of that player (including any Coin in Hand cards). In return, they place the card they just revealed in front of that player. If the chosen player has no coins in front of them, the revealing player instead takes one of their items worth 5 ducats. If the chosen player has no items worth 5, an item worth 10 is taken instead. If the chosen player has no items at all, the revealing player gains nothing but must still give the revealed card to that player.

Example: A player reveals a Coin in Hand card and chooses a player who has three items in front of them: two coins and a magic cherries card. They take the two coin cards and replace them with the revealed Coin in Hand card.
