The Anatomy of a Dinosaur

Each card shows: Ferocity (top left), Type (the dinosaur's name and sex symbol), Unique Effect (card text, e.g. "A T-Rex will not pack with another T-Rex. May only pack with Eggs."), Score Value, and the number of that card type in the deck.

Setup

  1. Give one player the Fossil deck and give the other player the Footprint deck.
  2. Each player shuffles their own deck and places it face down in front of them.
  3. Make sure each player has space for a discard pile off to one side of their deck and a score pile off to the other side.
  4. Each player draws a hand of 5 cards from their deck.

Gameplay

The game is played in a series of rounds, until one player has no more cards in either their hand or their deck. Each round consists of 3 phases, performed in order: 1) Face Off! > 2) Fight! > 3) Finale!

1. Face Off!

During this phase, both players select one or more cards from their hand and play them face down in front of themselves. The player who won the previous round must play their cards first. If the previous round ended in a double knockout, the player who played first in the round before that must play first again.

Note: During the first round, the player with the Footprint deck always plays first.

If a player plays more than one card (known as a "pack"), all cards in the pack must be compatible. For cards to be compatible, they must usually be dinosaurs of the same species. The only exceptions are certain cards with effects that specifically state otherwise (e.g., "May pack with any dinosaur").

2. Fight!

After both players have played their cards face down, it's time to fight! Both players simultaneously reveal the cards they played. Once all played cards have been revealed, apply any effects the cards have. Each player then adds up the total Ferocity from the cards they played, taking into account any Ferocity bonuses. The player with the higher total Ferocity wins the round! If both players are tied, there is a dramatic double knockout!

3. Finale!

In this phase, the player who won the round takes all cards their rival played this round and adds them face up to their own score pile. Then, the player who won the round takes all of their own cards they played this round and adds them face up to their discard pile.

Note: Eggs are an exception! Any Eggs played by the player who won the round are added to their score pile instead of their discard pile.

Once the player who won the round has placed cards in their score and discard piles, the player who lost the round draws cards from their own deck until their hand is back up to 5 cards. If the player who won the round has no cards left in their hand at this point, they get to draw one card from their deck.

Double Knockout!

If there is a double knockout, all cards played this round are added to their respective player's discard pile (except Eggs, which are added to their respective player's score pile). Neither player draws any cards, unless they have no cards left in hand, in which case they get to draw one card from their deck. For the purpose of card effects, a double knockout is treated as if both players win that round.

End of the Game

Players will continue playing rounds as above until at least one player has no more cards in either their hand or their deck at the end of a round. When that happens, the game ends immediately. Both players then add up the point values of all the cards in their respective score piles. The player with more points wins! In the event of a tie, the player with more cards in their score pile wins!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do the blinding effects of multiple Dilophosauruses stack? A: No! If a player plays 2 or 3 Dilophosauruses in a single pack, their rival will still only be blinded for the next round!

Q: When should I discard due to a Velociraptor? A: For every Velociraptor added to a player's score pile during the "Finale!" phase, the player who won the round must discard one card from their hand and shuffle it back into their deck. The player who lost the round is never affected by their rival's Velociraptors.

Q: How do I calculate Ferocity for the Compys? A: Compys get stronger the more of them there are in a pack. A single Compy's Ferocity will always be equal to the total number of Compys in that pack. For example, if a player has 3 Compys in their pack, each Compy will have 3 Ferocity, for a total Ferocity of 9...enough to tie with a female T-Rex!
