Before You Start ...
Round up four to seven players and place the Topic Cards pile in the center of the play area. Give each player 1 JinxO Board and 1 Board Marker. Randomly choose a player to start the first round of the game. Now you are ready to play JinxO!
JinxO Board Overview
The JinxO Board has 9 Answer Boxes arranged in a 3x3 grid, each with a Jinx Star in the corner. Along the right side of the grid are the Score Boxes. Along the bottom edge of the grid are the Horizontal Bonus Points (claimed for completing a row) and along the right edge of the grid are the Vertical Bonus Points (claimed for completing a column).
Game Start!
1. If you are the First Player, you may start the game by taking the top card from the Topic Cards pile. Read aloud any one topic from the card.
2. All players write down exactly 3 answers for the chosen topic, each in any available answer box on their JinxO Board.
Repeat these steps until 3 topics has been chosen and all players have filled out every Answer Box, 9 answers in total.
An Answer Is Considered Valid If
A. It consists of no more than 2 words (except for proper nouns, such as Brand Name, City, etc.)
B. It is not the same as an answer already written on the board (even if it's for a different topic).
3. Starting with the first player, and continuing clockwise, players take turns saying one of their answers out loud. Answers that have been previously chosen in this round may not be selected.
There Are 3 Possible Outcomes
A. Several players have written down an answer that matches the Active Player.
All players with a matching answer may raise their hands and draw a circle around the answer.
B. Only one other player has written down an answer that matches the Active Player.
In this case, both players may shout out "Jinx!". Draw a circle around the answer and shade in the Jinx Star on the top-right corner of the corresponding answer box to mark extra points.
C. No other players have written down an answer that matches the Active Player.
In this case, the Active Player crosses out (X) their answer and doesn't score for that answer.
4. Play then continues. Repeat these steps until 1 player has run out of answers to mark. The player says "I'm done!" and immediately triggers the end of the round.
5. End the first round by counting up their total points. Jot it down in the Score Boxes to the right.
- 1 POINT for every circled answer
- 2 POINTS for every shaded Jinx Star
- 0 POINT for every crossed answer
Bonus Points Are Counted!
Along the side of the grid on the JinxO Board are bonuses that players may claim if they were able to circle every answer in a column or row.
In the example on the board, this player's score in Round 1 is 15:
- 7 POINTS for the circled answers
- 2 POINTS for the shaded Jinx Star
- 6 POINTS for the bonus points
Another Round!
The player with the lowest score of the previous round may become the first player for the next round.
Game End!
The player with the most total points after 3 rounds wins the game!
FAQ
What is considered a match?
If one answer is considered to be a more general or specific category of another answer, it is not considered a match. Example: CHEESE and CHEDDAR is not a match.
If the words are synonyms and express the same specific idea, it can be considered a match. Example: SMALL and TINY is a match.
Beyond the rigid rules, if there should be any contention on whether answers count as a match or not, other players may decide whether or not it counts as a match.
