Components

  • 1 Game Board
  • 1 Rulebook
  • 2 Shaman's Drums (in case you lose one)
  • 25 İye Tiles:
    • 1 İye of Owls
    • 3 İyes of Water
    • 5 İyes of Tree
    • 7 İyes of Horses
    • 9 İyes of Sun

Setup

Turn the İye tiles face-down and shuffle them. Place them randomly on the 25 empty spaces of the game board and turn them face-up. Every game will have a different arrangement of İye tiles.

Assemble the Shaman's drum. Place the drum on the centre tile of the game board.

After completing the setup, place the rule book next to the game board with the back page facing up. On this back page is a list of rules that explain how the İyes' abilities work.

Game Goal

This game of İye is made up of cycles. Whoever manages to win 2 cycles wins the game and gains the right to become the next Shaman. There are two ways to win a game cycle: You win if your opponent has no legal moves, or if you have the most points when there is but a single İye Tile left on the board.

At the end of each cycle, whichever player has the most İye Tiles of a particular İye type, receives a number of points equal to the number of the İye Tiles that the game has of that type. See the Scoring a Cycle section for an example.

Game Structure and Rules

The first player is the one who is most interested in Shamanism. You can also use any other method to determine the first player.

On their turn, a player chooses to perform a "Natural Movement" or an "İye Tile Movement" to move the Shaman's drum. Whichever İye Tile the drum moves onto is given to the opponent along with the turn.

When there is but a single İye Tile left on the game board, the cycle ends and scoring begins.

ATTENTION: Whichever İye Tile the drum moves onto is given to the opponent, regardless of the movement type. A player cannot, under any circumstance, take the İye Tile for themselves after completing a movement on their turn.

Natural Movement: The players can move the Shaman's drum for 1 or 2 spaces on a vertical or horizontal axis. The drum cannot be moved diagonally through a Natural Movement, only vertically or horizontally. The drum cannot be placed on an empty tile, but it can move over them. Moving over an empty tile still counts as moving 2 spaces.

Game Strategy: Give your opponent the İye Tiles that are least likely to be of use to them, and maintain a majority in tile count by the end of the game.

If a "Natural Movement" is impossible to perform, that is to say if there are no İye Tiles within 2 vertical or horizontal spaces for the drum to move onto, the player must perform an "İye Tile Movement". Players cannot pass their turns. On their turn, a player can opt to perform an "İye Tile Movement" even if they could have performed a "Natural Movement".

İye Tile Movement: The İye Tiles that have been gathered on previous turns can be utilised by the players to move the Shaman's drum beyond what is naturally possible. In such an instance, whichever İye Tile the drum lands on is still given to the opponent. An İye Tile that has been utilised thusly is spent and "discarded" next to the game board. It will not be included in scoring. The number and types of discarded İye Tiles must always be visible to both players.

The Premature End of a Cycle

If a player is unable to execute any legal moves during their turn, the cycle ends then and there. The player who was last able to execute a movement, becomes the winner. This can only occur if a player has no possible "Natural Movement" to execute and no applicable İye Tiles that can be used for an "İye Tile Movement".

İye Tiles

İye of Sun

The İye of Sun represents the protective mother. There are 9 of them in the game. The Shaman candidate can utilise an İye of Sun to place the drum on one of the four corners of the game board. The İye of Sun cannot be utilised if all four corners are empty.

İye of Horses

The İye of Horses represents the connection between life and death. There are 7 of them in the game. The Shaman candidate can utilise an İye of Horses to move the drum in an "L" pattern. This is the same "L" movement that a Knight makes in chess. So, the drum is moved 2 spaces in one axis and 1 space on the other.

İye of Tree

The İye of Tree represents the ladder between livelihood and nature. There are 5 of them in the game. The Shaman candidate can utilise an İye of Tree to move the drum one space diagonally.

İye of Water

The İye of Water represents abundance and fertility. There are 3 of them in the game. The Shaman candidate can utilise an İye of Water to move the drum any number of spaces vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. This is the same movement pattern that a Queen has in chess.

İye of Owls

The İye of Owls represents the spirit of freedom and protection. There is a single İye of Owls in the game. The Shaman candidate can utilise the İye of Owls to move the drum to any tile on the game board. The İye of Owls is truly without restriction in its movement.

Scoring a Cycle

There are two ways for a cycle to end:

  • There are no legal moves for the current player
  • There is a single İye Tile left on the game board

If a cycle ends because a player was not able to move, the player who played the last move wins the cycle. In this case, there is no need for scoring.

If a cycle ends because there is a single İye Tile left on the game board, scoring ensues. Each type of İye is scored separately. Whoever holds the greatest count of a particular type of İye, receives all the points for that type. If both players hold an equal number of tiles regarding a type of İye, neither player wins any points. Moreover, any İye Tile that was used for an "İye Tile Movement" is not counted during scoring; it has been spent and "discarded".

Scoring Example

OwlsWaterTreeHorsesSunTotal Score
Player One1 (1 point)2 (3 points)23 (7 points)311 (1+3+7)
Player Two1224 (9 points)9 (9)

After every single type of İye has been scored, the player with the greater amount of points wins the cycle. The player who lost the cycle chooses the next cycle's first player.

If the scores are tied, the cycle has no winners. In that case, the second player of the cycle becomes the first player of the next cycle.
