  • 500 cards (100 of each category)
  • Felt Bag
  • Hourglass (30 Seconds)
  • Scorepad

Set Up!

  1. Split up into two teams. Sit in a circle, alternating between players from each team. Pick a team name and write it on the scorepad.
  2. Put 4 (or 5) cards from any category in the bag for each player in the game. For example, if you have 10 players then you would play with 40 (or 50) cards.

Start Playing!

This is a team game. Winning will rely on how well you can guess your teammate's clues. Pay attention to who is on your team to give the most appropriate clues.

It's In The Bag! is played over three rounds, and the same cards are reshuffled and reused each round. The rounds end once all of the cards from the bag have been guessed, and after the third round the game ends!

Round 1 | Free for All

Anything goes (well almost anything). You can describe your card in any way you want without saying any of the words on the card. In addition, you cannot describe the word itself, meaning you may not say how it is spelled, what it rhymes with, etc.

Round 2 | One Word Clues

Now you're only allowed to give one word clues to describe your card. Once the clue is given, you cannot say anything else.

Round 3 | Act it Out

No words allowed. No sounds allowed either, unless your group votes to allow it.

How to Play

  1. Give the youngest player the bag to start the game.
  2. Flip over the hourglass to begin the turn.
  3. Take out 1 card from the bag and start describing it to your team according to the rules of the round you are in.
  4. As soon as someone from your team guesses the card, place it on the table in front of you. Continue this process until either the hourglass runs out or all of the cards from the bag have been guessed correctly.
  5. If the hourglass runs out, pass the bag to the next player clockwise around the table. They will flip the timer and follow the same steps.
  6. If all of the cards from the bag have been guessed, the round ends. Turn the hourglass on its side.

End of Round

  • Tally Up Points: Each card that was guessed is one point for your team.
  • Put Cards Back In Bag: Shuffle the cards that were just used and put them back into the bag.
  • Start The Next Round: The player who finished the previous round can use any remaining time they had to start the next round. Flip the timer back upright to begin!

Other Rules/Tips

  • Tally Up Points: If a player breaks the round's rule (or any other rule), they must place the card in the back of the bag and draw another card. DO NOT say what the card was, as it will still be used.
  • Skipping: Skipping a word is allowed 1 time per turn. Just put the card in the back of the bag and take a new one out.
  • Strategy Tip: If you don't know the words on your card, try breaking them apart and describing the words separately. (Example on the rulebook page: the card "Butterfly" is illustrated as "butter" + "fly".)

End of Game

After all three rounds are finished, add up the round totals for each team. The team with the most points WINS!
