Setup
Shuffle the Metropolis building deck and place it face down, separately, above the normal building deck.
Draw the top 3 cards from the Metropolis building deck and place them in a separate row above the row of normal buildings, directly above the building track tokens. To buy these buildings you need 3, 2 or 1 books respectively.
Translator's note: the setup gives the book costs as 3, 2, 1 "respectively" without naming the positions, while rule 2 below gives them as 1, 2, 3 by card position. The source does not resolve this, so both are transcribed as printed.
Play
Metropolis buildings work the same way as normal buildings, with these additions:
- For each Metropolis building, players must first own a normal building. For example, if a player has 1 normal building and 1 Metropolis building, they must first acquire one normal building before they can buy another Metropolis building.
- Only 3 Metropolis buildings are available in the row at any time. These buildings require books (1, 2 or 3 depending on the card's position). There are no Metropolis buildings that require no books. As usual, when a player buys a Metropolis building, shift the cards to the right and place a new Metropolis building card from the corresponding deck in the freed leftmost space, so that 3 cards are again available for purchase.
- At the end of the game, each Metropolis card is worth +1 renown, as shown to the right of the card's name.
Architect Variant with Metropolis
From the Architect variant section of the base rules (page 24 of the source). The rest of that section describes base-game changes and is not reproduced here.
If you are playing with the Metropolis expansion, players do not draft Metropolis cards. When players receive building cards, they may choose which deck to take the card from: normal buildings or Metropolis.
