Aim of the game

Try to find all the right ingredients in the enchanted forest as fast as you can and use them to cook up three magic potions.

Setting up the enchanted forest

The numbers 1 to 7 in the steps below refer to the numbered markers on the component illustrations in the instructions.

  1. Slide the tree trunk 1 into the tree trunk 2, forming a cross. This is the main tree. Place it at the centre of the bottom half of the game box 3.
  2. Slide the forest floor 4 over the main tree, so that the pine cones are pointing up. Place the tree top 5 on top of the main tree. Make sure that the pine cones shown on the forest floor and on the tree top are aligned in the same position.
  3. Slide the trees 6 through the slits on the tree top and stick them into the slots on the forest floor 7. That’s all.

Your enchanted forest is finished!

Getting started

Spread out all the ingredients at random and evenly throughout the forest. Make sure that the ingredients do not land outside of the rotatable forest floor.

In each corner of the enchanted forest there is an indentation. These serve as your baskets, where you can store your collected ingredients. Pick out a basket and sit at the table in front of it and make sure that the enchanted forest is well within everybody’s reach. Take the five magic tiles that match the colour of your basket, and one magic rake.

Recipe cards

Shuffle the recipe cards and give each player three cards each. Lay them face up next to one another in front of you. Any magic rakes, recipe cards or magic tiles that you don’t need are set aside.

Let the search begin!

The youngest player starts. Then, take turns in a clockwise direction. First, examine your recipe cards, so you know which ingredients you need for your magic potions. Each player has a different recipe, and each recipe requires exactly seven ingredients.

Important: You may only collect the ingredients for one recipe card! Start with the leftmost recipe card lying in front of you. On your turn, you are the master magician for the round.

Selecting magic tiles

As the master magician, choose one of your magic tiles and read the number on the card aloud. This number indicates how many ingredients you’re allowed to collect in this round (2, 3 or 4). At the beginning, you can choose from two, three or four ingredients. The magic tiles that you have selected are then discarded from the game, so that you have fewer and fewer magic tiles throughout the course of the game.

Tip: Choose your magic tiles wisely. As long as you’re collecting ingredients, the other players can collect as many ingredients from the enchanted forest as they want. And some players may be faster, while other players may be slower than you.

Turning the enchanted forest

After reading the number on the magic tile, turn the forest floor in a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction as many ants as shown on the magic tile. By turning the forest floor, the position of the enchanted forest, and thus the location of the ingredients, change.

When turning the forest floor, hold the centre of the main tree.

Tip: Using the magic tiles, try to turn the enchanted forest as far as you need to, so that you are nearer to the ingredients that you need for your recipe.

Example: Julie is the master magician. For her magic potion, she needs one red, one yellow, and one green ingredient, as well as two orange and two black ingredients. First, she looks at the enchanted forest to see where the ingredients are, and then chooses a magic tile with the number three on it. She turns the forest floor in a clockwise direction three ants further. The position of the enchanted forest has changed and she is now closer to the ingredients that she needs.

Collecting ingredients

Now, everyone plays at the same time! Pick up your magic rakes. The master magician gives the start signal by calling out “search!” Everyone collects the ingredients they need for their respective recipe cards and puts them in their baskets, one after the other, until the master magician has finished his search and calls out “end your search!” Then, everyone immediately lays down their magic rakes.

Important: As the master magician, you can only call an end to the search once you have exactly the same number of ingredients in your basket that you previously called out. It doesn’t matter yet if the collected ingredients are right or not.

Example: Julie, as the master magician, can only call out “end your search”, once she has exactly three ingredients in her basket.

Tip: Always keep in mind that you should collect your ingredients as fast as you can, because until you call out “end your search!”, all the other players may collect as many ingredients from the enchanted forest as they want.

Special case: If you have collected less ingredients than the number given on the magic tile, because you don’t need so many more ingredients for your third magic potion, your search is still valid. You don’t have to return any ingredients.

If you think you already have the required ingredients to make the magic potion from the recipe card before the search has ended, you can collect further ingredients for the next recipe card until the master magician has ended the search. But be careful! If one of the ingredients of the recipe card you just completed is not correct and you therefore don’t have all the ingredients on the recipe card, you have to put all the ingredients that you collected for the next recipe card back into the enchanted forest.

Example: The game is now into a later round. Linus is the master magician for this round. He only needs one yellow and one blue ingredient to complete his first magic potion. Since he doesn’t have any magic tiles left with the number two, he selects the magic tile with the number four and wants to collect two white ingredients for his second recipe card. Linus turns the forest floor four ants further in a counter-clockwise direction. Then he calls out “search!” and collects exactly one yellow, and one blue ingredient for his first recipe card, and two white ingredients for his second recipe card. Then he calls out “end your search!” and all players immediately stop collecting ingredients. Now, everyone checks if Linus does in fact have the right ingredients.

Tip: Before you begin your next round, make sure that your baskets are completely empty!

The player left of the master magician is the new master magician for the next round.

Rules for collecting

  • Stay seated while collecting your ingredients! Standing up and moving your chair is not allowed.
  • You are also not allowed to pull or move the playing board.
  • You are not allowed to put any ingredients into other players’ baskets.
  • If one or more ingredients falls outside of the box, they stay where they are until the end of the round. When the round is over, place them back in the enchanted forest at random.
  • If there is one or more false ingredients in your basket, they stay where they are until the end of the round. You may not put them back into the enchanted forest before the round is over.

Emptying the baskets

Once the master magician has ended the search, everyone takes out the ingredients from their basket and checks if they have collected the right ingredients. Beginning with the master magician’s basket. Afterwards, check your own baskets one after the other.

Correct: If the collected ingredients match your recipe card, you get to lay the ingredients on your recipe card. You must always complete your leftmost recipe card first. Then, if you have any ingredients left that match your next recipe card, you can lay these down, too.

Incorrect: Every ingredient that doesn’t match your recipe card must be put back into the enchanted forest. And as a penalty, for each incorrect ingredient, you have to put an additional ingredient back into the enchanted forest that you have just correctly collected. However, you don’t have to return more ingredients than what you collected in this round.

Note: If the master magician has collected fewer ingredients than his magic tile indicates, he has to return one ingredient that he has just correctly collected for every missing ingredient.

A magic potion is finished

If you have a full recipe card, your magic potion is finished. Take all your ingredients from the recipe card and return them to the enchanted forest. Then, turn over the recipe card.

End of game

There are two ways to end the game:

  • As soon as a player has finished his third magic potion and has called out “stop!” If he has collected all the right ingredients, he has won the game.
  • As soon as everyone has used all their magic tiles exactly one time. The player with the most completed magic potions wins. In the event of a tie, the player with the most ingredients on his recipe card wins. If the game is still tied, multiple winners are possible.
