Components
- 1 Hero Card
- 2 Equipment Cards
- 15 Level Cards
Level Cards show: (A) Button(s) at the top-left corner, (B) Combo Start Cost, (C) Combo Continue Cost, (D) Enemy Cost, and (E) Ability.
Setup
- Choose a difficulty:
| Difficulty | Level Cards in the level |
|---|---|
| Tutorial | 9 cards |
| Standard | 10 cards |
| Hard | 11 cards |
| Expert | 12 cards |
- Shuffle the 15 Level Cards, then create a row of face-down Level Cards based on the chosen difficulty. Cards in this row are "in the level."
- From the remaining Level Cards, deal 3 face-up cards to your hand. Set aside any unused Level Cards; they will not be used in this game.
- Add the 2 Equipment Cards face up to your hand.
- Place the Hero Card above the leftmost card in the level, with the number 1 at the bottom. The card under your hero is your "current Level Card."
- Flip your current Level Card face up.
Gameplay
Over the course of 4 runs, attempt to pass each card in the level from left to right. A run ends if you are unable to pass your current Level Card, or you pass the final card and win the game.
All cards in the level start face down, but the cards you flip remain face up to help you plan future runs.
Passing Level Cards
To beat the level and win the game, you must pass each Level Card from left to right.
Each Level Card has 2 enemies, but you only have to defeat 1 to pass the card. To defeat an enemy, you must play buttons matching its cost (see Paying Costs). When you pass your current Level Card, move your hero above the Level Card to the right, flip it face up, and attempt to pass it as well.
Paying Costs
Pay costs by playing buttons that match the icons in the cost. Star (*) icons may be paid using any button. Buttons are located at the top-left corner of each Level and Equipment Card, and may be played in 2 ways:
- Discard: Discard a face-up card from your hand into the discard pile to use its button(s).
- Press: Choose a face-up card in the level that you have passed during this run, and shift it down to use its button (do not discard it).
If you discard an Equipment Card to pay a cost but only use one of its buttons, you lose the other button.
Abilities
You may use your current Level Card's ability (if any) before attempting to pass it. To do so, flip a face-up card in your hand, or discard a face-down card from your hand (keeping that card face down in the discard pile). Your hand may have up to 1 face-down card. If you use an ability and already have 1 face-down card in your hand, you must discard it.
Resolve the ability immediately on use. You may use your current Level Card's ability at most once (before moving on to the next card, or swapping out your current Level Card).
Combos
Combos are colored lines that may connect across multiple Level Cards. To start a combo, pay the start cost (two matching buttons) on your current Level Card and pass it. Then, as long as the next card's combo line connects, you can pay the continue cost (one button) to pass that card.
A combo ends if any of the following occur:
- Your current Level Card does not connect to the combo line of the previous card.
- You do not pay the continue cost.
- You use an ability during the combo.
Example: A combo was started by paying the start cost (two buttons) on the first card, and then the continue cost (one button) was paid to pass the second card. The combo line on the third card didn't connect, ending the combo. Defeating the enemy with a two-icon cost would start a new combo.
End of Run
Your run ends if you cannot pass your current Level Card. If this is your 4th run, and you haven't passed the final card, you lose the game. Otherwise, prepare for the next run as follows:
- Return all discarded cards to your hand.
- Add the leftmost card from the level to your hand (increasing your starting hand size by 1).
- Flip any face-down cards in your hand face-up.
- Reset all pressed cards in the level by shifting them back up. (Face-up Level Cards remain face up.)
- Rotate the Hero Card to its next higher number and place it above the new leftmost Level Card. Flip your current Level Card face up if it isn't already, then begin the next run.
Winning the Game
Pass the final Level Card to win the game!
Clarifications
- A swapped card retains its face-up/face-down state.
- A swapped card inherits the pressed/unpressed state of the card it swapped with (if you swap out a pressed card, the new card enters pressed).
