Goal

Be the most acceptably human monster by avoiding traits deemed too "monstrous."

How to Win

The player with the fewest points at the end of 4 turns wins unless one or more player scores 10 or more points, in which case the player with the highest score wins, by redefining what it means to be human!

The Deck

Make a deck of the following 15 cards: 3 each of Stink, Eyes, Slime, Claws, and Scales.

A look at the cards: each card shows a Name, a Monster image, and two different abilities, with Good advice printed on the card face. The example Claws card in the rulebook has the abilities "Name a card. Each Monster after you who reveals the named card scores 1 point." and "Target monster guesses a card, if it's in your hand they gain 1 point."

Turn Order

  1. Deal

The oldest player shuffles and deals each player a hand of three cards, then deals one card face-up into the middle of the table. This card is called the Middle card. The rest of the cards form the "deck."

  2. Choose Down Cards

Each player chooses one of their 3 cards and places it face down in front of them. This card is called the player's "Down Card." During the game, Down Cards will be revealed at which point they become (wait for it...) "Up Cards." The remaining 2 cards form a player's "hand." Players' hands should be held so that the other players can't see them.

  3. Reveal Down Cards (Turning them into Up Cards)

After all cards are placed, the dealer reveals his/her Down Card by flipping it over. After revealing the card, the dealer chooses ONE of the two abilities to use and follows what that ability says. If one ability isn't usable, then the player MUST choose the other ability.

After the dealer's ability has resolved, the next player clockwise reveals their Down Card and picks which ability they want to use. This continues until all players have taken their turn revealing their Down Cards and using an ability.

  4. Score Monster Points (Scoring points is bad)

Players score 1 Point for every Up Card OTHER THAN THEIR OWN that matches a card in their hand. Players score 2 points for each card in their hand that matches the Middle card.

Note: We suggest using paper, pennies, or whatever to track points.

  5. Change Dealer and play another turn.

Collect up all the cards and hand them to the player to the left of the dealer. This player shuffles them up and becomes the new dealer. Repeat steps 1-5 until you have had 4 rounds. The player with the fewest points at the end of 4 rounds wins unless any player gets 10 or more points – if that happens, the player with the MOST points wins instead.

Scoring Example

Example #1: Ali scores 3 points from the Slime card in her hand – 2 points for matching the Middle card and 1 more point for matching one of the other player's Up Cards. She also scores 1 more point because the Scales card in her hand matches one of the other player's Up Cards (she does NOT score for matching her own Up Card). Ali's hand scores 4 points in total.

Example #2: Rob scores 2 points – one for each Slime card in his hand that matches the Slime Up Card.

Note: if the one Slime card was the Middle card, he would have scored 4 points!

Rules for 5-8 Players

Additional Rules for 5-8 players:

The Deck

In a 5 or 6 player game includes 24 total cards: 4 each of the following: Claws, Stink, Scales, Eyes, Slime, and Teeth.

In a 7 or 8 player game includes 30 total cards: 5 each of the following: Claws, Stink, Scales, Eyes, Slime, and Teeth.

Playing Ahead

The first 4 players choose and play Down Cards before the Dealer reveals and executes an ability.

  • After dealing, only the Dealer and the next three players play Down Cards. After the Dealer reveals his Down Card and does their ability, the 5th player plays their Down Card. This continues with the player to the left of the dealer revealing their Down Card and doing the ability followed by the 6th player playing their Down Card etc... This gives later players more information before they choose their Down Cards. Once the first 4 players have revealed their Down Cards, the 5th player reveals their Down Card, followed by the 6th player and so on until all remaining players have revealed their Down Card.
  • Players who have yet to play their Down Card can NOT be targeted with abilities!

Winning with High Points

  • In a 5-6 player game, instead of 10 or more points causing the highest total to win, it takes 11 or more.
  • In a 7-8 player game, instead of 10 or more points causing the highest total to win, it takes 12 or more.

Card Abilities

The rulebook does not print a complete list of the card abilities. The abilities are printed on each card face; the rulebook's card art is not legibly attributed to individual card names, so no per-card list is transcribed here.
