Game Idea

Players bring their horses back from the paddock to the stables. Different items need to be collected on the way back.

Whoever's turn it is, rolls both dice before deciding which one to use. He can either move his horse towards the stables or collect an item and piece it into his puzzle board. Only when the puzzle board is full can he move his horse into a stall. The aim of the game is be the first to bring one's horse back to a stall in the stable.

Game Setup

Before starting to play for the first time carefully punch the puzzle pieces out of the puzzle boards.

Unfold the game board and place it in the center of the table. Each player takes a puzzle board and places it in front of him, he then chooses a horse and places it in the pasture (= starting squares). Get both dice and the puzzle pieces ready.

(Board labels: the four target squares; pasture squares; starting point.)

How to Play

Play in a clockwise direction. Whoever has stroked a horse most recently starts and rolls both dice.

The red die indicates how may squares you can move your horse. The blue die indicates which puzzle piece you can take and puzzle into your puzzle board.

For example, if a horseshoe appears on the blue die you can puzzle one horsehoe into your board. The star means you can take any one of the puzzle pieces that you want.

Now you have to decide which of the dice actions you will choose.

  • Will you move your horse the number of spaces indicated on the red die?
  • or take a puzzling piece according to the blue die and place it on your puzzle board?

Then it's the turn of the next player to roll the dice.

Watch out: You are only allowed to take your horse into a stall after you have filled your puzzle board with all seven puzzling pieces. So make sure you collect all the pieces in time.

End of the Game

Whoever fills his puzzle board and brings his horse into a stall first, wins the game. He has taken really good care of his horse, forgetting nothing.

Variations

Simple variation

The game is easier if you follow the instructions of both dice. When it's your turn and there is no free space left in the puzzle board for the piece on the red die, you can't puzzle anything into the board. [Sic: as printed, "red die"; the puzzle-piece die is the blue die.]

The following two variations are played according to the rules of the basic game, except for the following changes:

Hurdle race

Before starting to play, place one or both hurdles in the middle of any two stable-path squares. The horses may not step on the squares with hurdles, they have to jump over these squares. Example: If a player rolls two dots and his horse stands two squares in front of a hurdle, the horse may not be moved.

Solo die

Whoever's turn it is to roll the dice has to choose only one of the two dice and then roll it.
