Setup
The elephant slide is assembled and placed at the edge of the sandbox. The assembly steps are shown in the diagrams on the sheet.
Place the toys in front of the slide, in the sandbox.
With 2 players, we recommend using 6–8 toys. Children who do not yet lose well should play with 6 or 8 toys, because that makes a tie more likely.
If a single winner is to be found, we recommend playing with 7 toys. With 3 or 4 players, we recommend 8–12 toys (here too, a tie is made more likely by choosing a number of toys divisible by the number of players).
The more toys there are, the longer the game lasts. As a parent, you can thus adjust the length of the game to your child.
Each player takes one game piece (one Pliplom).
Rules
Toddler Variant, Ages 3–4
The youngest player begins by rolling the dice. This variant uses the pip die (Augenwürfel). The number rolled may be used to climb the slide with your Pliplom: one step per pip. Each player rolls only once per round. The slide has 6 steps. Whoever rolls past the 6th step may slide down and take one toy from the sandbox (surplus pips are lost). After that, the player begins climbing the slide again.
If a player's roll lands on a step that is already occupied, that player knocks the other Pliplom off the slide, and the other player may begin climbing again.
The game ends when there are no toys left in the sandbox. Whoever collects the most toys wins.
Variant for Older Children
The rules are almost the same, but the game is played with all 20 toys and both dice. First, roll the number die (Zahlenwürfel).
- If the player rolls a zero, they may not move, and so may not climb further up the slide.
- If the player rolls the arrow symbol, they swap the position of their Pliplom with that of another Pliplom.
The biggest changes compared with the variant for younger children come next. When a Pliplom is allowed to slide down and has reached the sandbox, it rolls the pip die and may then take as many toys as it rolled.
There are two ways to end the game:
- If a player manages to collect 5 toys of the same colour, that player wins immediately.
- If there are fewer than 5 toys of the same colour, play continues until no toys remain in the sandbox. In this case, the player with the most toys wins.
