Materials
In addition to the word grids included in this document you will need:
- a smart speaker
- two game pieces for tracking score
- approximately 20 small pieces (such as pennies) to use as bonus point tokens
- pen or pencil
Set Up
- Lay out one 4x4 word grid.
- Divide players into two teams and place the game pieces on the START square of the scoring track.
- Put the bonus point tokens in a pile next to the word grid.
- Ask your smart speaker to flip a coin to decide who goes first.
Play
Teams alternate asking one question to the smart speaker.
In your question you may NOT:
- use any form or part of the word
- spell the word
- say the word in a different language
- ask for a synonym or a rhyme
If the smart speaker says the word (or any form of the word), you capture that word.
Forms of the word include plurals, other tenses of the word, and any form of the word that retains the meaning of the original.
If You CAPTURE a Word
- You score the points on the top right of the card, plus any bonus points that have been added to the word.
- Move your piece that number of squares on the scoring track.
- Add one bonus point to a card of your choice that touches the captured word on its top, bottom, left or right edge (up to a maximum of 4 bonus points per card).
- Using a pen or pencil, cross that word off of the grid and return any bonus point tokens that were on it to the pile.
If You DON'T CAPTURE a Word
- Add one bonus point token to the word you were attempting to capture (up to a maximum of 4 bonus points).
Winning
The first team to reach the end of the scoring track by scoring 16 or more points, wins.
Scoring Track
The scoring track runs from START to 16 WIN, with squares numbered 1 to 16 in order.
Clarifications
- Only one question can be asked per turn. If the speaker asks if you want it to continue, or if it asks a follow-up question, you must respond "no."
- If the speaker says any form of the word it counts as a capture. For example, if the word is "ship," then "ships," "shipping," "shipment," etc., would all count as captures. However, if the word is "car" then "carpet," "cardinal," "scar," etc., would not count as captures, as those words are not forms of the word "car."
- The speaker itself has to say the word. For example, it doesn't count if the speaker plays a song or audio file that contains the word.
- "No spelling" means that you can't use acronyms in your question that include the first letter of the target word. For example, if the word is "space," you are not allowed to use the word "NASA" in your question.
Word Grids
The print&play document contains ten 4x4 word grids (160 words in total), each word printed with its point value. Each grid is one game session. The word lists are game content and are not reproduced in this transcription.
