Components
- 15 terrain tiles
- 3 river tiles
Kind of Tiles
Each tile in Hextremadura is divided in 6 terrain blocks from 3 different types: forest, river and crops. The tiles have two sides. The front shows two basic requirements and the back side shows 1 or 2 icons (acorn, stork or monument) and a final score objective. Both sides are easily distinguised in their structure.
- Front: forest terrain, crops terrain, water terrain, and the basic requirement (bubble).
- Back: the final score objective, and the flora, fauna and monument icons.
River Tiles
There are 3 tiles that do not contain any requirement or objective. When playing any of these tiles you may choose to place it on either of its two sides. Keep in mind that, as they have no requirements, they will stay on the same spot that you placed them untill the end of the game.
About This Game
The objective of the game is to finish your journey map by exploring as much terrain as possible. Learn about the nature of this land and complete the 15 objectives enclosed in this beautiful spot.
Game Preparation
- Shuffle all tiles and form one pile showing their front. This will be the pile of terrain to discover.
- Place the first tile of the pile next to it. Each turn, you may choose to play this tile or the tile at the top of the pile (available tiles).
- Leave room for an extra pile of explored terrain which you will be filling as you complete requirements during the round.
How to Play
A game of HEXTREMADURA is played along 2 or more rounds until there are no remaining tiles to be placed or collected. At that moment, the game ends and the scoring begins.
Play one of the available tiles placing it on the play area to start composing the map. The next tiles we play must be placed adjacent to one or more tiles that are already on the map. There will be always 2 available tiles (except for the last tile of the round): if you didn't play the top tile of the pile, refill the gap that the tile used has left with the first tile on the pile.
- If, while placing a tile, you meet both the basic requirements of one or more tiles, remove these completed tiles from the map and place them on the explored terrain pile.
- If you meet an advanced objective, do nothing. Those objectives will reward you points during the end game scoring.
Completing requirements
In order to complete a basic requirement (front) you must have a certain number of terrain spaces from a certain kind of terrain. They must be joined and adjacent to the side towards which the bubble points. These spaces can belong to one or many tiles.
Examples (illustrated):
- A group of 2 spaces of water terrain and a group of 6 spaces of crop terrain.
- Only 1 requirement of tiles 3 and 4 are met.
- Both requirements on tile 3 are met.
Explored terrain
At the end of the first round (when you placed all the tiles in the pile of terrain to discover, ergo, you played them all), the pile of explored terrain becomes the pile of terrain to discover.
Flip the pile so the tiles show their back, revealing the final score objectives as well as the icons for flora, fauna and monuments. Repeat steps 2 and 3 of the game preparation phase and start a new round.
If, during this round, you complete any of the basic requirements that remained from the previous round, proceed as you did before, forming a new pile of explored terrain with them.
Final score objectives
Final score objectives shown on the backs are global, that means their requirements can be met anywhere on the map. They do not have to be adjacent to the tile that shows the objective, like you did with the front ones.
If, while placing a tile, you complete one or more final score objective, keep playing. The tiles showing their back are not removed from the game even when their objectives are fulfilled.
End of the Game
The game ends when you can no longer place any more tiles, either because the pile of tiles is empty and/or there are no tiles on the land that can be picked up and placed back on the pile.
Add one point per each final score objective completed. You can match your score againt the following table to see how well you performed: scores run from 1 to 14, with marked thresholds at 9, 12 and 14, and a star for a perfect score.
Whether you have completed one or many objectives, just by reaching the end you should be proud of yourself. You have explored the lands of Hextremadura to their extention and you have discovered many beautiful landscapes.
