Components

  • 1 camera: lets you take a photo when you discover a treasure chamber.
  • 5 photographs: they show what is in the treasure chamber that has been revealed.
  • 20 lamps: light up the corridors so you can move faster.
  • 4 player cards: here you keep your treasures.
  • 4 archaeologist figures: the archaeologist explores pyramid tiles and carries treasures away with him.
  • 4 helpers: the helper carries lamps and can rotate pyramid tiles.
  • 30 pyramid tiles: these are the corridors of the pyramid.
  • 5 treasure chamber tiles: here you find treasures and possibly the mummy and the curse.
  • 1 start tile: the entrance to the pyramid.
  • 8 treasure tokens: if you carry one to a safe place, you score points.
  • 1 figure of Tutankhamun's death mask: the most valuable treasure; if it is lifted, it causes the pyramid to collapse.

Setup

  • Turn all pyramid tiles face down and shuffle them. Place the start tile and arrange the pyramid tiles in a 6 x 6 square. The start tile is the entrance to the pyramid.
  • Each player chooses a colour and places one helper and one archaeologist on the start tile. Each player also takes lamps and the player card of his colour and places them in front of him.
  • Shuffle the photographs and put them into the camera. Place the camera next to the pyramid.
  • Shuffle the treasures and stack them face down next to the death mask. Place this whole stack next to the game board. [Dutch text layer: the death mask is always the last treasure brought into play.]

Beginning of the Game

The youngest player begins. Play then passes to the left.

Turn

On your turn you may perform a total of three actions, or pass. But be careful: the archaeologist and the helper can do different things. You may divide your three actions between the two figures.

The actions are:

ArchaeologistHelper
Move 1 tile through the pyramidMove 1 tile through the pyramid
Discover 1 tile of the pyramidRotate 1 pyramid tile
Place 1 lamp in a corridor
Pick up 1 lamp

The Archaeologist

[Dutch text layer] The actions you can perform with the archaeologist are described in more detail here. In addition, the archaeologist can also do some things that do not count as actions, such as carrying or stealing treasures.

The archaeologist can:

  1. Move to an adjacent opened pyramid tile that has a passage to it. This costs 1 action.
  2. Open a new pyramid tile if it is connected to the archaeologist's tile by a passage. This costs 1 action.

[Dutch text layer] Moving through the pyramid: you may walk over opened pyramid tiles, following the corridor. A normal tile has a corridor (light colour) and one or more walls (dark colour). You may not walk through a wall into an adjacent tile. Each tile you walk onto counts as 1 step (1 action).

[Dutch text layer] Discovering a pyramid tile (1 action): the move must end on the closed tile. So there may be no wall between the tile the archaeologist stands on and the closed tile. Once you have turned the tile over, you may place it however you like. If you discover a secret burial chamber, you take a photo: take one photograph of your choice from the camera. For what happens next, see "If a Treasure Chamber Is Found" below.

Carrying Treasure

[Dutch text layer] Carrying a treasure is not an action. Go with your archaeologist into a burial chamber where treasures lie, then try to bring the treasure to the start tile. If you succeed, you place the treasure, face down, on your own player card. It is now in your collection and can no longer be stolen by another player. You carry a treasure by moving it together with your archaeologist.

[Dutch text layer breaks off here: "A treasure can also be left behind on..." The rest of the sentence is not present in the PDF text, so no rule is given for leaving a treasure on a tile.]

The rules as printed in the Russian layer:

  • If a treasure chamber is found, only the archaeologist can carry the treasures found in it out. This does not require any additional actions. Place the treasure token under the archaeologist's figure to show that he carries it.
  • If the archaeologist manages to bring the treasure to the start area, the player places it on his player card. At the end of the game each treasure brings its owner 2 or 3 points.
  • Any other archaeologist who finds himself on a tile together with an archaeologist carrying a treasure may steal it. Move the treasure under the figure of his own archaeologist to show that he now carries it.

The Helper

[Dutch text layer] The actions you can perform with the helper are described in more detail here. The helper can walk, rotate walls, and place or pick up lamps.

The helper can:

  1. Move to an adjacent opened pyramid tile that has a passage to it. This costs 1 action.
  2. Rotate a pyramid tile if the helper stands on it, or if the adjacent tile is connected to it by a passage. This costs 1 action.
  3. Place or take back a lamp in a corridor. This costs 1 action.

[Dutch text layer] On rotation, the Dutch text says the helper must be on or next to the tile; the Russian layer gives the condition as the helper standing on the tile, or the adjacent tile being connected by a passage. The Russian wording above is transcribed, and the Dutch sentence breaks off in the PDF text.

[Dutch text layer] A lamp may be placed on an opened tile where your helper stands, in the corridor. A lamp of your own colour may be picked up again while your helper stands on that tile (1 action). A picked-up lamp returns to your supply. Lamps of several players may be placed on the same tile.

Lamps

Lamps let you move faster through the pyramid corridors. Only lamps of your own colour count for your archaeologist and helper. Normally, moving onto an adjacent pyramid tile counts as one action; but if the tiles carry lamps of your colour, you move between cells connected by lamps in one action, as if those tiles were adjacent.

If a Treasure Chamber Is Found

When a treasure chamber is found, take one photograph from the camera and carry out the actions shown on it:

  • A) Gain 1 point.
  • B) Place on the treasure chamber tile the number of treasure tokens shown, face down. The Russian layer says face down; the Dutch text layer says these treasures are placed face up with their points visible. This transcription follows the Russian layer as printed.
  • C) Resolve the mummy effect.
  • D) Resolve the curse effect.

[Dutch text layer] Treasures: take as many treasures as are shown in the photograph and place them in the newly discovered burial chamber, with the points visible. Each treasure shows how many points it is worth. The death mask is always the last treasure brought into play.

Mummy Effect

If there is a mummy in the photograph, it awakens and runs out of the pyramid by the shortest route from the burial chamber to the entrance of the pyramid. If there are player figures on its path, they are frightened and flee the pyramid. Place all of these figures outside the pyramid on the start tile. If two or more routes are equally short, the effect applies to all of them.

[Dutch text layer] The mummy in the burial chamber awakens from the dead and runs out of the pyramid. Everyone in the pyramid is frightened and runs for their lives. As soon as the mummy comes outside the pyramid, it instantly crumbles to dust. All figures [that is, of all players] standing on the shortest route from the burial chamber to the start tile are frightened and flee the pyramid. Place all these figures outside the pyramid on the start tile. If there is no continuous open connection between the burial chamber and the start tile, the mummy does not awaken and nothing happens.

[Dutch text layer] The turn of the player whose turn it was ends immediately. If that player has not yet made all 3 actions, that player is unlucky.

Curse Effect

The curse effect works like the mummy effect, except that the lamps of the players are removed instead of the figures.

[Dutch text layer] By opening the burial chamber you unleash an age-old Egyptian curse. The curse makes its way outward and blows out all lamps on its path. As soon as the curse reaches the start tile outside the pyramid, it vanishes into the air. The curse blows out all lamps standing on the shortest route from the burial chamber to the start tile. Remove all these lamps [that is, of all players] from the tiles and return them to their players. If two or more routes are equally short, the effect applies to both or all of them. If there is no continuous open connection between the burial chamber and the start tile, the curse is not unleashed and nothing happens.

[Russian layer] The player's turn ends immediately. If this player has not yet made all 3 actions, this player is unlucky. Lamps may be placed again during the following turns.

Adding the Photograph to Your Collection

Once all the actions shown on the photograph have been carried out, place the photograph on your player card.

Collapse of the Pyramid

If the Last Treasure Chamber of Tutankhamun Is Found

The collapse mechanism is activated immediately after the last treasure chamber is discovered. The Tutankhamun mask token is placed on the treasure chamber tile.

The pyramid collapses either when the mask is carried off the treasure chamber tile, or after 3 turns have passed since the mask was discovered.

On the first turn of the collapse, the treasure chamber tile is removed from the game. Then, at the end of the turn of the player carrying the mask, the tiles adjacent to it are removed, and so on until the whole pyramid has collapsed and only the start tile remains. Tiles are removed together with everything on them.

Be careful! If an archaeologist is removed together with its pyramid tile, that player loses 2 points; if a helper is removed, that player loses 1 point. So it is important to leave the pyramid in time.

After the third turn of the archaeologist who found Tutankhamun's mask, the pyramid starts to collapse in any case. So keep track of this, so that you do not forget to start the collapse process.

[Russian layer, hidden text, alternate wording] The collapse mechanism is activated when the mask is carried out of the burial chamber, or when the mask has remained in the burial chamber for three rounds. Removing the death mask from the burial chamber activates the collapse: the burial chamber is removed from the game as soon as the player holding the mask finishes his turn. Each time the player holding the mask finishes his turn, the next adjacent series of tiles collapses, and everything on them is removed. This continues after each turn of the player holding the mask until the whole pyramid has disappeared. Be careful: the death mask [like all other treasures] may be taken by other archaeologists. The start tile is the only safe place, and it is not removed.

[Russian layer, hidden text, alternate wording] If the mask remains in the burial chamber: after the third turn of the archaeologist who found Tutankhamun's mask, the pyramid collapses in any case. The burial chamber is removed from the game immediately after this third turn, together with everything on it. Each time the player who found the mask finishes a turn, the next adjacent series of tiles collapses, and everything on them is removed. This continues after each turn of that player until the whole pyramid has disappeared.

[Note on the conflicting wording] The visible Russian text says the collapse begins after 3 turns from the discovery of the mask; the hidden alternate wording says "three rounds". The visible wording is transcribed above as the main rule.

End of the Game

The game ends when the pyramid has completely collapsed and only the start area remains.

Winner

The player with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Count the points of all photographs and treasures in your collection. If your archaeologist or helper is still inside the pyramid when it collapses, you receive a penalty for it.

  • Each photograph is worth 1 point.
  • Treasures are worth 2 or 3 points each.
  • Tutankhamun's death mask is worth 5 points.
  • If you lose your archaeologist, you receive -2 points.
  • If you lose your helper, you receive -1 point.

If scores are tied, the player who still has both his archaeologist and his helper wins. If there is still a tie, the player who holds Tutankhamun's death mask wins.

Enjoy the game!
