Case File Construction System

This deck of cards gives players all they need to create randomly generated Case Files, providing an almost unlimited variety of scenarios to play through.

The deck is made up of seven Elements, each consisting of one title card and a number of Element cards. The Elements are:

  1. Environment
  2. Investigation
  3. Threat
  4. Objective
  5. Twists
  6. Showdown
  7. Confrontation

The back of this card details the steps for constructing a Case File deck from these Elements.

Other expansions will add additional Element cards that allow their Enemies, cards and room tiles to be used with the Case File construction system. These can simply be shuffled into the appropriate Element set.

Element 1: Environment

All cards in this Element are marked with the icon shown above.

The front of each Environment card shows its approximate duration. Players should decide how long they want the Case to take and pick a card at random from those with their chosen duration. Do not look at the back of the card. This card forms the top of your Case File deck.

Element 2: Investigation

All cards in this Element are marked with the icon shown above.

The front of each Investigation card shows its approximate Challenge Rating. Pick a Challenge rating and put its card under the card that you chose for Element 1.

Element 3: Threat

All cards in this Element are marked with the icon shown above.

This Element contains a number of different Minion groups, each on a separate card. Each group is thematically consistent - all Frog Monsters, for example. There is also one card labelled "Abnormal Threat", which lets you face an entirely random selection of Minions.

If you would like to use the Abnormal Threat card, put this one at the bottom of the Case File deck (which should currently [...] of two cards).

Otherwise, remove it from the Element and shuffle the other cards together. Take one at random, without looking at it, and put it at the bottom of the Case File deck.

Element 4: Objective

All cards in this Element are marked with the icon shown above.

Shuffle the Objective cards. Then draw the bottom Objective card and place it on the bottom of the Case File deck, without looking.

Element 5: Twists

All cards in this Element are marked with the icon shown above.

The number of Twist cards that are used depends on the duration of the Case File (as shown on the Environment card in the in-play area):

  • Short: One Twist
  • Medium: Two Twists
  • Long: Three Twists

Shuffle the Twists cards. Then, without looking at them, draw that many cards from the bottom and place them on the bottom of the Case File deck.

Element 6: Showdown

Each Showdown card is tied to one of the Objective cards. Flick through your Case File deck, looking at the bottom-right corners, and find the card with the green "A" icon - this will have a number next to it.

Find the Showdown card with the matching number and put it on the bottom of the Case File deck.

Element 7: Confrontation

All cards in this Element are marked with the icon shown above.

Shuffle the Confrontation cards. Then draw the bottom one, without looking at it, and place it on the bottom of the Case File deck. This completes the Case File deck for this Case.
