Scope

This file covers only the Helblindi Mage Card and its Personal Spells. The magazine states the usage rule as follows:

"Helblindi can be used as a Mage in any game of Black Rose Wars or Black Rose Wars Rebirth."

Setup, turn order, Spells, Activation Tokens, Trophies, Quests, Power Points and every other rule are those of the Black Rose Wars base rulebook. This file does not restate them.

Helblindi Mage Card

The Mage Card is a standard Mage Card for use in a Black Rose Wars game. Its printed values, read from the photo, are:

  • Heart icon: 12
  • Fist icon: 8
  • Spark icon (framed symbol): 2
  • Figure icon: 2
  • Boot icon: 1
  • Trophy icon, inside a circle: the Trophy slot on the card

The card has two empty framed four-pointed-star slots on its artwork, one beside the other, left of the Mage's figure. The photo shows no symbols in them.

The Mage Card has no printed rules text. Its icons are read from the photo and are not labelled in the photo. Their names and meanings are those given by the Black Rose Wars base rulebook for the same icons on a standard Mage Card.

The card is labelled "ESSEN 2022 Promo Card" in the bottom-left corner.

Personal Spells ("Jotuns Vindar")

The three spell cards in the photo carry the title Jotuns Vindar in the header bar. The magazine calls them Personal Spells. The cost icons are printed in the header of each card, on the left. The photo does not show how the rules text of a Personal Spell is used; that is governed by the Black Rose Wars base rulebook, which this file does not restate.

Spell A (front card in the photo, fully legible)

  • Cost icons: a crystal orb, a fire symbol, and the number 3 in a hexagon.
  • Text: "Inflict 2 [heart] Place yourself in the target Room."

Spell B (rotated spell at the bottom of the photo, upside down, legible)

  • Text, read upside down: "[cost symbol]: Inflict 2 [heart] to the target; each time they leave a Room."
  • The cost icons are printed along the bottom of the card, upside down, and are not transcribed beyond what is shown above.

Spells C and D (two cards behind Spell A, partly covered)

  • Only the start of the second line is visible on each: "Place y..." (the rest of the line is covered by the card in front).
  • The first line of text on each is covered and is unreadable in the photo.
  • The cost icons on each are partly visible but are not transcribed.
  • The rules text of these two Spells is not transcribed because it cannot be read. It needs a clearer scan or a printed card to complete.

Gaps and Judgement Calls

  • Spell count. The magazine says 2 Personal Spells. The BGG listing says 3. In the photo, one upright spell (A) lies on top of two more upright spell headers (C and D), and a rotated spell face (B) lies at the bottom of the photo. It is not clear from the photo whether B is a separate card or the back of one of the stacked cards. This file transcribes the four spell faces that are visible and does not reconcile the count with the magazine. The count needs a card-in-hand check.
  • Unreadable text. The first line on each of the partly covered Spells is unreadable in the photo. It is not guessed.
  • Icon meanings. The Mage Card's icons are transcribed as read from the photo. Their names are not printed on the card and are not guessed here.
  • Companion sources. The magazine's product page is the only print-side source located. Nothing from it is needed for the spell text.
