Game Goal

The goal of this cooperative game is for all of you together, using both Speedy's fluff ball and the special abilities of his friends, to gather the ingredients for the hedgehog's legendary cake as quickly as possible and bring them home before the fox reaches the house.

Components

  • 1 hedgehog (fluff ball)
  • 1 adhesive hedgehog face
  • 1 fox
  • 1 hedgehog (game piece)
  • 8 double-sided board pieces:
    • 1 starting board with the hedgehog
    • 1 board with the house
    • 1 board with the fox
    • 5 board pieces with paths
  • 18 adhesive ingredient pieces
  • 5 adhesive friends
  • 2 die-cut owls (the owl twins)
  • 1 bear catapult
  • 1 elk slide
  • 1 sliding wild boar

Note from the rulebook: not suitable for children under 36 months. Contains small parts that can be swallowed. Choking hazard. Keep the address.

Setup

  • Before the first game, carefully push all the cardboard parts out of the punch sheets. Then assemble the elk slide carefully as shown.
  • Lay out the path on the board pieces according to the chosen variant (see Beginner Setup and Advanced Setup below).
  • Place the hedgehog on the hedgehog space on the starting board. Together you move the hedgehog along the path home. Place the fox on the fox space on the corresponding board piece. He hurries to reach the hedgehog's house before Speedy does!
  • Place the lid of the box next to the board pieces so that you can all reach it easily. Put the adhesive friends into the box lid with the adhesive side facing up, so that the animals cannot be seen.
  • Mix the 18 adhesive ingredient pieces and place them with the adhesive side facing up in the middle of the table.
  • Also place the fluff ball, the owls, the bear catapult, the elk slide and the wild boar ready.
  • The youngest of you begins and takes the fluff ball. Afterwards you play clockwise.

Note: anyone who is already an expert can follow the special rules under "For Even More Fun" (on the last page of the rules) for an extra challenge.

Beginner Setup

For your first game, lay out the board pieces as shown in the diagram: board pieces 1, 2, 3 and 4, the board with the house, and the side of the fox board that shows 12 spaces.

  • The path always starts on the starting board with the hedgehog and ends on the board with the house. The board with the fox forms the closing piece and connects to the board with the house.
  • The paths on the board pieces must always match up.
  • In later games you can lay out the path pieces freely (see "For Even More Fun", The Hedgehog Path).

Advanced Setup

Once you have mastered the beginner version, you can try the advanced setup. For your first game with it, lay out the board pieces as shown in the diagram: board pieces 1*, 2*, 3*, 4*, the board with the house*, and the side of the fox board that shows 10 spaces.

  • The board pieces for advanced players have shortcuts drawn on them (see "Shortcuts").
  • The path must still match up at every connection, as in the beginner setup.

Playing the Game

Whoever is currently taking their turn carries out the following actions one after another. Turns pass clockwise.

Choose a Friend!

Use the fluff ball to collect a friend who will support you this round. Proceed as follows:

  • Throw the ball into the box lid so that it first bounces off the table.
  • You have as many attempts as you need until at least one friend sticks to the fluff ball or is turned over onto its other side by the throw.
  • Once a friend has stuck to the fluff ball or has been turned onto its front side, you may not throw any further to get another friend.
  • If several friends have stuck to the ball or been turned onto the front side, you may choose which friend will help you with his or her special abilities this round, and keep the matching accessory ready.
  • Then put all the friends back into the box lid with the adhesive side facing up, and mix them well.

Speedy looks for the ingredients for his cake and asks his friends for help. Use the special abilities of the friends described below to collect the ingredient pieces. You may collect all ingredient pieces that stick to the fluff ball or are turned over onto their front side. Place the collected ingredients in front of you.

The source prints no heading for this step; the friend abilities below belong to it.

Owl Twins

Seen from above you see more! With the help of your flying friends you can see the ingredient pieces much better!

Take the two die-cut owls, one in each hand, and hold the fluff ball between them. Support yourself with your elbows on the table, hold the ball above the ingredients, and then let it go to collect the ingredients. If you lost the ball before your elbows were on the table, the collection is invalid and you must try again.

Squirrel

The little squirrel is nimble and skilful, and can also collect ingredients that are further up!

Take any 4 ingredients and let them drop one after another onto the fluff ball from a height of 10-15 cm, so that they stick to it. Pieces that do not stick but land on the table may not be used for your turn and go back to the other laid-out pieces.

Bear

The bear is strong and heavy! He can effortlessly throw Speedy into the air!

Place the bear catapult about 10-15 cm away from the ingredient pieces on the table. Place the fluff ball on the lower side of the catapult and aim it towards the ingredient pieces. Now strike the empty side of the catapult and fling the fluff ball at the ingredient pieces to collect them. If you do not succeed right away, you may try again for as long as you like until you have collected ingredient pieces.

Elk

It is great fun to climb up the elk's antlers and slide down its back towards the ingredients!

Place the elk slide about 10-15 cm away from the ingredient pieces on the table. Take the fluff ball and let it roll down the slide to collect the ingredients.

Wild Boar

The wild boar gives you time and knocks the fox off the path!

Roll the fluff ball by hand over the ingredient pieces. If you collected at least 1 hazelnut, you may use the wild boar's help. If you could not collect any hazelnut, your turn is over, and you may move neither the wild boar nor the hedgehog.

All collected hazelnut pieces go back, adhesive side up, to the other laid-out pieces. If you collected grain or strawberries as well as hazelnuts, you may keep those pieces for your turn.

Now take the wild boar, place it on the house on the corresponding board, and note which space the fox is standing on. Then flick the wild boar with your finger towards the fox, to knock him off the space he is standing on, or hit him so that he falls over. If you succeed, the fox must move back one space. In addition, the fox may not move forward at all in this round.

If you missed the fox, or only touched him lightly so that he still touches the space he was on, nothing happens, and the fox may move one space forward as usual at the end of your turn (see "Move the Fox!").

Example 1: The fox was successfully knocked off the space (12) he was standing on, so he must move back one space (11). The fox may not move forward in this round.

Example 2: Oops, the fox was not hit by the wild boar! He may stay on his current space (11) and, at the end of the round, move one space forward as usual (12).

Move the Hedgehog!

For each ingredient piece you collected, you may move the hedgehog one space forward onto an adjacent space that shows the matching ingredient.

Note: remember that if the wild boar is your friend, you must first give it all the hazelnuts before you may move the hedgehog with the other ingredients.

You may not move the hedgehog if:

  • you collected 5 or more ingredient pieces with the fluff ball, OR
  • you did not collect a matching ingredient to move the hedgehog, OR
  • you could not collect any ingredient pieces, OR
  • you have decided not to move the hedgehog this turn, because you would rather wait for the next turn to collect ingredient pieces that you need for a shortcut (see "Shortcuts").

You must always follow the path, and you may not skip spaces if you have not collected the matching ingredient. You may use all of the collected ingredient pieces, or only some of them as needed, in your turn. Each ingredient piece may be used only once. Ingredient pieces you did not use may not be saved for your next turn.

Place the collected ingredient pieces, picture side up, in front of you.

Move the Fox!

The fox was not invited to the party. So he plans to break into Speedy's house and ruin the party while Speedy and his friends are looking for the ingredients for the cake. Once your turn with the hedgehog is finished, you move the fox one space forward towards the house, every time.

Note: if the fox was knocked off his space by the wild boar, he may not move forward in this turn.

Set the Ingredient Pieces Aside!

All collected ingredient pieces are set aside, picture side up. As soon as 4 or more pieces show the same ingredient, all ingredient pieces are shuffled again and placed, adhesive side up, in the middle of the table.

Ending the Game

As soon as you have brought the hedgehog back home into the house together, you have won!

If the fox is faster and reaches the house before the hedgehog, unfortunately the fox has won.

Note: Speedy's house may be entered with any ingredient piece.

Shortcuts

Some forest animals are willing to show Speedy shortcuts, but not without a return favour! For their help they want to be rewarded with their favourite food.

On the board pieces for advanced players, shortcuts are drawn in, which let Speedy move forward faster along the path. If you land with the hedgehog on a space that shows the possibility of a shortcut, you may choose whether to use the shortcut with the help of the forest animals, or to move forward normally along the path with the ingredient pieces. To have a forest animal help you and be allowed to use the shortcut, you must give it exactly the amount and kind of ingredient pieces that it asks for.

Example: the hedgehog stands on the space with the hazelnut. In your turn you collected 2 grain, 1 hazelnut and 1 strawberry. You now have two ways to move the hedgehog:

  1. You use the strawberry, the hazelnut and one grain, and move the hedgehog along the normal path onto the space with the grain. Then set all the ingredient pieces aside (together with the unused grain piece).
  2. You accept the help of the mole: for the two grain you may use the shortcut and move the hedgehog to the other side of the board piece. Then set all the ingredient pieces aside (including the unused ones).

Note: the source does not name the mole among the friend pieces in the component list; it appears only in this example.

For Even More Fun

Once you have a lot of practice, you may enjoy variants that make the game even more challenging and exciting. Try the following adjustments:

The Hedgehog Path

Lay more path board pieces together to make the route longer for Speedy. You may also combine the sides of the board pieces: leave some on the beginner side and turn others over to the advanced side. The longer the path you lay out for Speedy, the greater the challenge of getting the house back in time before the fox.

Quick Fox

Let the fox start from any space on the board with the fox. The closer to the house the fox starts, the more challenging it is for Speedy to reach the house before the fox.
