The Game

Lord Voldemort's followers turn into terrifying Death Eaters at night. They spread fear and terror in the wizarding community and make use of Unforgivable Curses. This can only be prevented if the wizarding community captures the Death Eaters.

In "Harry Potter: Kampf gegen die dunklen Mächte" each of you takes on a random role: there are Hogwarts students, witches and wizards with special abilities, and Death Eaters.

You win if you find out who the Death Eaters are, unless you are a Death Eater yourself. In that case you must deceive cleverly and divert suspicion onto others!

Contents

16 role cards (3 Hogwarts students, 2 Death Eaters, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, Sirius Black, Neville Longbottom, Ginny Weasley, Fred Weasley, George Weasley, Luna Lovegood, Minerva McGonagall, Albus Dumbledore), 16 round role markers.

Setup

Before the first game: Carefully punch all role cards and role markers out of the die-cut board.

Tip: If you have a smartphone, download the free app "Werwölfe Vollmondnacht" from Ravensburger. It takes over the role of the game leader and you can all concentrate fully on playing. You can also play without the app.

Before each game: Choose which role cards you want to play with. There must always be 3 more role cards in the game than there are players.* You can choose the roles freely or play one of the recommended scenarios. The different scenarios are found from page 17 of this rulebook (the scenarios are listed at the end of this document).

Tip: In the first round it is best to play the scenario "Das erste Schuljahr" (The First School Year) with 3-5 players, even if you are more than 5 players. Then you do not have to learn so many roles at once. Since a round is very short, nobody has to watch for long.

Then for each chosen role card place the matching role marker face up in the middle of the table. With the role markers you can remember which roles are in the game. Then shuffle the chosen role cards. Each player receives 1 role card face down. The remaining 3 role cards are placed face down next to each other in the middle. Make sure nobody sees the fronts of the cards.

*For better readability only, the generic masculine is used; it is meant gender-neutrally in all cases.

Now each player looks at his card and so learns his role. Then everyone puts the card back down face down in front of him. The cards must be easy to reach for all other players. Now determine a game leader or start the app. Do not forget: the game leader is also a player and also has a random role! In the separate game-leader sheet the game leader finds everything he needs to know to guide through the game.

Course of the Game

There are 2 parties in Hogwarts: the Death Eaters and the Hogwarts inhabitants. At the end, normally one of the two parties wins. A game always lasts 1 night and 1 day. At the end of the day all Hogwarts inhabitants vote on who might be a Death Eater. The role of the player with the most votes is "captured" and his party loses!

Night

At the beginning of the night everyone closes their eyes.

During the night there are various roles that wake up one after another and then use their special abilities.

From page 10 of this rulebook all roles and their special abilities are explained (the roles are listed below in this document). There you will also find tips on how you can play the roles.

Tip: For the first game it is enough to read through only the roles you are playing with. You do not have to remember when it is your turn and what you have to do. The game leader (or the app) calls you and tells you which actions to carry out.

Day

Now everyone may open their eyes again.

During the day you discuss who the Death Eaters might be. You may claim anything, but you must not show anyone your card. You also must not look at your own card again.

Tip: Here it is often important to reveal something about your role and to tell the other players what you know thanks to your special abilities. Neville Longbottom, for example, can admit that he swapped role cards.

But beware: As a Death Eater you must pretend to be a different role! Only then can you deceive your fellow players...

A good start for the discussion: simply ask the other players which role they have. You will already learn a good deal that way...

Voting

After a few minutes of discussion, a vote is held. Count to three together and then everyone points at the same time at a player of their choice. The player with the most votes is captured. In the case of a tie, all players involved in the tie are captured.

Exception: If every player receives exactly 1 vote, nobody is captured!

Tip: Time pressure in the discussion increases the tension. In the first games you can take more time. The more often you play, the shorter the discussion should be. At the beginning play with about 10 minutes of discussion time, later with 5 or even fewer minutes. If you play with the app, you can set the discussion time freely.

Now all of you turn over your role card and reveal who you are.

Swapped Role Cards

Players will often be surprised which role card lies in front of them at the end of the game: some Hogwarts inhabitants swap cards during the night. At the end, the role card that last lies in front of the player counts - even if it is a different one from the one he looked at at the beginning. The player may thereby change parties!

Beware: It is forbidden to look at your card again during the day. So sometimes you cannot be so sure who you are when you wake up again...

End of the Game - Who Has Won?

Basically:

  1. The Death Eaters win if no Death Eater is captured.
  2. The Hogwarts inhabitants win if at least one Death Eater is captured. (If, because of a tie, one or more Hogwarts inhabitants are additionally captured, the Hogwarts inhabitants still win.)

No Death Eater among you? If no player is a Death Eater because the role cards lie in the middle, you must cooperate well: the Hogwarts inhabitants only win if no Hogwarts inhabitant is voted for. Nobody is captured if every player receives exactly 1 vote in the vote.

Tip: If you believe there is no Death Eater, it is best to agree that everyone points at their left neighbour. Then nobody is captured and you all win together if there really was no Death Eater...

Not sure who has won? Then use the "Who has won" check on the back of the game-leader sheet.

Roles (Sorted Alphabetically)

Each role has the following information in its title: role name: party, actions (wake-up order), difficulty.

  • Party: All roles belong either to the Hogwarts inhabitants or to the Death Eaters. At the end, all members of a party win or none.
  • Actions: There are roles that are called during the night and wake up (night-walking, "nachtwandelnd") and roles that are not called (sleeping through, "durchschlafend").
  • Wake-up order: Each night-walking role has a number that indicates when it wakes up during the night.
  • Difficulty: The roles are of different difficulty. There are 3 difficulty levels: *, ** and ***. In the first games play only with levels * and **.

Albus Dumbledore

Hogwarts inhabitant, night-walking (5), *. Spell: "Cistem Aperio!"

Dumbledore may look at a card in the middle. If he decides to look at a card, he must exchange it with a role card - either that of a fellow player or his own. If he takes the card of a fellow player, he may not look at it, and places it at the corresponding spot in the middle.

Beware! If Dumbledore gives himself a role that wakes up later in the night, he does not wake up again. However, he is now a member of the team of his new role card.

Fred and George Weasley

Hogwarts inhabitants, night-walking (2), ***.

The twins Fred and George come into the game only together. During the night they open their eyes and look at each other. If only one of them opens his eyes, the other role card is in the middle.

Tip: The twins Fred and George are very strong, because they can give each other an alibi. Brave Death Eaters can also claim to be Fred or George. Then the real twins may be put in an awkward position. Fred and George Weasley should only come into the game from 7 players, otherwise they are too strong!

Ginny Weasley

Hogwarts inhabitant, sleeping through, **. Spell: "Immobilus!"

Ginny pulls a player with her into captivity. If Ginny is captured, the player Ginny pointed at is also captured.

Tip: Ginny can be captured and still win, by pointing at a Death Eater. Do you think your fellow players suspect the wrong person and you know better? Then try to get captured and take a Death Eater with you.

Harry Potter

Hogwarts inhabitant, night-walking (8), *. Spell: "Alohomora!"

Harry wakes up and may reveal the card of any fellow player. The card stays face up during the day phase.

Exception: If Harry discovers a Death Eater, he turns the card back over.

Hermione Granger

Hogwarts inhabitant, night-walking (3), *. Spell: "Stupefy!"

During the night Hermione may look at either the card of a fellow player or two cards from the middle.

Tip: Hermione can expose liars. She has information about fellow players or cards that lie in the middle. If a fellow player contradicts this information, she can easily convict him. As Hermione it is worth waiting a little before revealing yourself, because then a Death Eater may already have given himself away.

Hogwarts Students

Hogwarts inhabitants, sleeping through, *.

The Hogwarts students have no special ability.

Tip: The Death Eaters will often claim to be Hogwarts students. So as Hogwarts students you must take care that your fellow players do not think you are Death Eaters!

Luna Lovegood

Hogwarts inhabitant, sleeping through, *. Spell: "Protego!"

Luna cannot be captured. If she receives the most votes in the vote (or Ginny points at her), she is nevertheless not captured. Instead the person with the second most votes is captured. In the case of a tie, only the others involved in the tie are captured.

Minerva McGonagall

Hogwarts inhabitant, night-walking (9), *. Spell: "Lumos!"

Minerva wakes up last and looks at her role card again. If it has changed, she now belongs to the party of the new role card.

Tip: Use Minerva McGonagall only if Sirius Black and/or Neville Longbottom are in the game.

Neville Longbottom

Hogwarts inhabitant, night-walking (6), *. Spell: "Expelliarmus!"

Neville swaps the role cards of 2 other players. He may not look at these cards. The 2 fellow players now each belong, of course, to the party of the role that now lies in front of them.

Ron Weasley

Hogwarts inhabitant, night-walking (7), **. Spell: "Reducto!"

During the night he swaps his role card with a face-down role card from the middle. He does not look at this new role card. He slips into the role and is in the corresponding party - but he does not know in which.

Sirius Black

Hogwarts inhabitant, night-walking (4), *. Spell: "Accio!"

During the night Sirius swaps his card with the card of a fellow player. Afterwards he may look at his new role card.

Beware! Sirius may change party: if he has, for example, swapped his card with a Death Eater card, he is now in the party of the Death Eaters. He does not, however, carry out the action of his new role. The fellow player who now has Sirius in front of him now belongs to the Hogwarts inhabitants.

Death Eaters

Death Eaters, night-walking (1), *.

During the night the Death Eaters open their eyes and look around for other Death Eaters.

Lone Death Eater: If only one player is a Death Eater, because, for example, the other Death Eater lies in the middle, he may look at a card from the middle.

Tip: As a Death Eater it is very important to lure your fellow players onto the wrong track. So claim to be a different role, preferably before the other players have revealed their roles too much. Claim, for example, to be a Hogwarts student. As a lone Death Eater you can also easily claim to be the role of the card from the middle that you looked at.
