  • Dry Erase Marker x1
  • Fair Folk vs. Hester Tokens x4
  • Arrow Tokens x8

Two sample card faces are printed in the components illustration:

  • Catch My Breath (Fair Folk card, cost 3): "No player can attack or infect until every other player has had 1 turn."
  • Objective (Objective card): "Play this card if there are 4 or more Nests in hexes that are exactly 1 hex away from the edge of the map."

Setup

  1. Shuffle the Objective cards and take 3 into your hand.
  2. Shuffle the Fair Folk cards and take 3 into your hand.
  3. Place the Fair Folk Faction Board faceup near you and place the Sword/Crown/Queen Token over their matching area on the Faction Board.
  4. Put all the Offer Tokens into the bag, then draw 3 out and place each one into a Nest Token.
  5. Keep all other Tokens (Arrow, Nests, X) nearby.
  6. Have one non-Fair Folk player write a 1, 2, and 3 each on different hexes on the Location Card. The 1 is where the Sword is hiding, the 2 is the Crown, and the 3 is the Queen. Have that player stick it in the standee and align it such that they can tell which hex on the Location card represents which hex on the map. The Fair Folk player can never see the front of this card.
  7. Take 1 silver cube and place it on one of the terrain hexes on your Faction Board.

Gameplay

The Fair Folk will take a turn before Protectors, Family, or Kammi takes a turn. This means in a 3 player game the order would be:

Fair Folk → Faction 1 → Fair Folk → Faction 2

In a 4 player game, Hester still plays last, and the Fair Folk will not get a turn before Hester. So the order would be:

Fair Folk → Faction 1 → Fair Folk → Faction 2 → Hester

On a turn, you can do these actions:

  • Play 1 Nest
  • Accomplish 1 Objective
  • Play cards (before or after placing a Nest)
  • Clean up

Example (page 4): In this example, the Location card is being viewed by the player controlling the Family. The Sword (1) is located on the hex on the right side with the mountain. The Crown (2) is on the yellow plains below and to the left of the Family's home hex. The Queen is on the teal wetlands hex beside the leftmost mountain.

Play 1 Nest

Take 1 of your 3 Nest Tokens that has an Offer in it and place it on any hex on the board:

  • that has no units on it
  • that has no Bonfire on it

You can place it on a hex with Townsfolk, Buildings, Doll Tokens, or Roots. If you don't have a Nest or an Offer Token in your possessions, then take them from anywhere on the map. If you need to remove a nest from the map, and it has an offer token on it, put the offer token back in your bag.

Gain a Silver cube: If you place a Nest on a hex that matches the terrain that has a silver cube on your Faction board, then add 1 silver cube from the supply to the Battleground.

Accomplish 1 Objective

If that Nest helps you accomplish an Objective, you can reveal that Objective card to the other players. To accomplish an Objective, you need to have 4 Nests on hexes matching what's indicated on the Objective card. Each Nest is valid, regardless if it has an Offer still in it or not.

Order you MUST find items: 1) Sword, 2) Crown, 3) Queen

Reveal the Objective card and show how you accomplished it (point to the Nests that prove you accomplished it).

Choose to either place an Arrow Token OR take a guess.

Place an Arrow Token: Point to any one of the Nests that still has an Offer on it that were used in completing the Objective and remove the Offer Token and put it back in your bag. Place an Arrow Token on the edge of the map that is in a straight line from the hex with the indicated Nest and point it to the left or right.

Example (page 5): In the example, the player had the Objective card where they needed 4 Nests that were in hexes adjacent to both a wetlands hex and a bog hex. They have accomplished this and can now reveal this Objective card to the players.

The other players check the Location card and if the Arrow Token is pointing in the direction of the item that you are currently looking for, then they leave the Arrow Token as placed. Otherwise they must flip the Arrow Token to point in the other direction.

Take a guess: Point to any hex and the other players tell you if that is the hex where the item you're looking for is located or not. You must find them in this order: Sword, Crown, Queen.

If you are incorrect:

Place an X token on that hex.

If you are correct:

Congratulations, you have found that item! Perform the following actions:

  • Flip an X Token and find one that matches the item you're looking for and place that on this hex. Leave this Token on the map for the rest of the game.
    • If you found the Sword, flip and slide the "1 token" on your Faction Board such that it displays the sword and covers the "?" on the board directly above it.

      • When you find the Queen's Sword, you will now get a silver cube every time a Haint dies or is Infected by Hester.

Caption (page 7): When the Sword is found, flip the '1 token' and place it on top of the '?' above it.

    • If you found the Crown, flip and slide the "2 token" on your Faction Board such that it displays the Crown and covers the "?" on the board directly above it.

      • When you find the Queen's Crown, place another silver cube from the supply onto a different terrain hex on this board.
    • If you found the Queen, flip and slide the "3 token" on your Faction board such that it displays the Queen and covers the "?" on the board directly above it.

      • When you find the Queen, you win the game! Your game is over and you will not get any more turns this round.
  • Remove all Arrow Tokens, and X Tokens and take them back into your Possessions.
  • Remove all Nests that have NO Offer Tokens in them and take them back into your Possessions.
  • Leave all Nests that still have an Offer Token in them where they are.

Example (page 8): In the below examples, if the Nest below the brambles was chosen, then you could place the Arrow token in any of these 3 locations. The Crown (2) must be in a hex in one of the red highlighted hexes.

Play Cards

Before or after (or before AND after) you play a Nest you can play as many Fair Folk cards that you can afford to play. To play a card, discard the number of silver cubes from the Battleground indicated in the top left of the Fair Folk card. Once played, discard the card.

Sample card faces (page 9):

  • Where o' where (cost 1): "Within the confined area, ask a player to place an X token on a hex that does not contain the item you're searching for."
  • Calm down (cost 2): "Remove up to 2 cubes from each opponent out of the Battleground."

Clean-up

During your clean-up if you have more than 6 cubes in the Battleground, discard down to 6. Draw until you have 3 Objective cards, 3 Fair Folk cards, and 3 Offer Tokens.

Other Players' Turns

During the cleanup of another player's turn, if they have a Unit on a hex with an Offer Token then perform the following steps:

  • A. That player takes the Offer Token out of the Nest (leave the Nest there) and adds it to their Possessions.
    1. That player can spend an Offer Token they own during any future turn as a free action. Once played it is returned to the Fair Folk's bag.
  • B. Activate the Tree (include ALL cubes in the Battleground) 2. If the Fair Folk have the same or more cubes than the player that collected the Offer, then the Fair Folk get to place an Arrow Token AND take a guess (see page 5). 3. If the player that collected the Offer has more cubes than the Fair Folk, then the Fair Folk do not get to place an Arrow Token or take a guess.

If a player has units on multiple Nests during their clean-up, then that player decides the order in which to resolve each Nest. If you find the item you're looking for and there are more offers to resolve, resolve them for the next item you need to look for.

End of Game

The game ends the same way for the other players as in previous chapters. At the end of any round if the Fair Folk have found their Queen, then they win. It is totally possible that both the Fair Folk and one of the other factions could win at the end of the same round. That's fine! They both accomplished what they set out to do, so good for them!

Fair Folk vs. Hester

You can also play a 2 player game where the Hester player follows the Solo rules, and the Fair Folk player follows rules described in this rulebook. The following are all new rules to both factions.

Setup: Setup the game according to the rules for the Solo mode for Hester (but use ALL the Solo cards), and setup the Fair Folk as described in this rule book (page 2).

Take the 4 FF vs. H Tokens and put them all in the Family bag (ensure any Ability Tokens have been removed). Each player takes a turn choosing a card to determine the location of the first Townsfolk and Building.

Gameplay: At the start of every turn, draw an FF vs H Token out of the Family bag. If an FF Token is revealed, then the Fair Folk take their complete turn. If an H Token is revealed, then Hester takes her complete turn. If the H Solo / FF Solo Token is revealed, then flip it like a coin. Whichever side lands face-up indicates who gets to activate the Solo card: Fair Folk or Hester. That player then chooses which Solo card to play, which Faction to activate, and all the other decisions while processing the Solo card. If the appropriate Units get to a hex with a Building or a Townsfolk give that faction 2 points and immediately flip a new Solo card to place a new Building or Townsfolk. When resolving the H Solo / FF Solo Token, only the activated faction can collect an Offer Token.

Keep any FF vs. H Token that has been revealed out of the bag until all 4 Tokens have been revealed.

Offers: Any Offer Token collected by the Protectors or the Family must be spent at the end of this turn by the active player. Offers collected by the Hester player (by moving an Infected Haint or Hester herself onto a hex with an Offer) are collected by the Hester player so they can be used in a future turn.

End Game: The Fair Folk win at the end of a round if they've found their Queen. Remove any Fair Folk tokens from the bag if there are any. If the Solo token is drawn after this, then Hester will resolve it instead of flipping it. Effectively, just like in the base game with the Fair Folk, once they find their Queen, their game is over. Hester wins at the end of her turn if all 6 squares on her Board are filled with Infected Haints (from making Bonfires) or Tokens from eating Legends.

If you have no more cards to place when you are required to place one, or if either the Protectors or the Family get to 7 points then a minor victory is possible. If the Fair Folk found the crown/sword, then Hester needs to have 5/3 boxes respectively filled on her board to claim a minor victory, otherwise the Fair Folk claim a minor victory.
