72 chips (29 x gold lumps, 16 x horses, 14 x pigs, 13 x geese), 1 four-leaf clover, 2 dice, 1 rulebook
Game Setup
Each player receives 6 lumps of gold and places them in front of themself. Sort the remaining chips according to their type. Make 4 piles and place them in this order: Lumps of gold, Horses, Pigs, Geese. Place the four-leaf clover next to the geese pile. Get the two dice ready!
(The rulebook shows a diagram captioned "Game setup for 4 players".)
How to Play
Play moves in a clockwise direction.
The player who everyone agrees is the luckiest starts by rolling both dice. This player can now exchange some of their chips. For example:
- Red dice: The red dice shows how many matching chips must be discarded. Stack these on the matching pile in the middle of the table..
- Blue dice: The blue dice shows how many chips may be taken in exchange from the next pile along.
The chips can be traded as follows:
| Discard | Take in exchange |
|---|---|
| Lumps of gold | Horses |
| Horses | Pigs |
| Pigs | Geese |
| Geese | Four-leaf clover |
Trading in the opposite direction is not allowed.
- e.g. Horses × Lumps of gold
You are not allowed to skip stages in the exchange sequence.
- e.g. Lumps of gold × Geese
Example
Moritz rolls a 3 with the red dice and a 2 with the blue dice. He has 4 horses in front of him and decides to swap: He puts 3 horses back on the horse pile and takes 2 pigs.
If you are unable or unwilling to trade, you can take two lumps of gold instead.
Then it's the next player's turn.
End of the Game
The game ends as soon as a player manages to claim the four-leaf clover. Note: When exchanging geese for the four-leaf clover, any surplus points on the blue dice can be ignored.
The player who claims the four-leaf clover wins the game. Like the hero of the Hans in Luck story, they have shed their burden and have found ultimate happiness!
