II. Setup
- Place the game board in the centre of the table. Keep the 4 net markers nearby.
- Randomly draw 1 score tile and place it beside the board. Place the round marker on the first space of the round track. Return unused score tiles to the box.
- Separate the shallow sea cards (zones 1–4) and deep sea cards (zones 5–10) into two face-down shuffled decks. Shallow beside zones [1–4], deep beside zones [5–10]. Align cards so the card backs match the board artwork.
- Each player takes 1 Haenyeo sheet and a pencil.
- Each player takes 3 Haenyeo pawns of one colour and 12 diving cards of that colour. Place 1 pawn beside zone 0.
- The player who most recently visited Jeju Island takes the First Player marker.
III. Game Flow
The game is played over 8 rounds. Each round has four phases:
① Select Diving Cards · ② Deploy Haenyeo · ③ Haenyeo Actions · ④ Prepare Next Round
① Select Diving Cards
Decide where to send your Haenyeo.
- Select diving cards equal to your number of Haenyeo pawns (start of game: 2 pawns = 2 cards; after gaining a 3rd pawn, select 3 cards).
- Place selected cards face-down in front of you.
- The number on the card shows which zone that Haenyeo will act in.
② Deploy Haenyeo
- When all players have selected cards, reveal all simultaneously.
- Place Haenyeo on the board in the zone matching each card number.
- Always place Haenyeo facing toward deeper sea (higher-numbered direction). Any sea creature on the Haenyeo's back goes in the zone one above.
- Sea creatures help establish the connection chain (see Phase ③).
Example: Playing a '3' card places your Haenyeo in zone 3, and the sea creature on her back (e.g. turtle) is placed in zone 2.
③ Haenyeo Actions
Haenyeo act in their deployed zone — but a Haenyeo diving too deep alone cannot act. She must be in a 'connected state', where divers help each other breathe from the surface.
The Connection Rule:
- Every zone from zone 1 down to the acting Haenyeo's zone must contain someone's Haenyeo or sea creature. It does not need to be your own.
- Zone 0 (the surface) never breaks a connection.
- If any zone is empty, that zone and all below are 'disconnected'. Haenyeo in disconnected zones cannot act.
Example: Zones 1–7 all have a Haenyeo or sea creature → all connected. Zone 8 is empty → zone 8 and below are disconnected → any Haenyeo deeper than zone 7 cannot act this round.
Action Order: Connected Haenyeo act zone by zone from zone 0 down to zone 11. Multiple players in the same zone act clockwise from the First Player. Once all Haenyeo in a zone finish, the next zone below acts.
Zone 0 — Use Turtle Eggs
Spend turtle eggs to gain a 3rd Haenyeo, or exchange for seafood or a pearl.
- Gain a 3rd Haenyeo: Spend 2 turtle eggs. Once per game only. From next round, select 3 diving cards.
Turtle egg exchange — choose one:
- Spend 1 turtle egg → gain any 1 seafood
- Spend 2 turtle eggs → gain any 2 seafood
- Spend 3 turtle eggs → gain 1 pearl
Note: Gaining a 3rd Haenyeo and exchanging turtle eggs can be done simultaneously.
Zones 1–10 — Harvest
Haenyeo harvest seafood, turtle eggs, or trash.
- Multiple Haenyeo in a zone take turns clockwise from the First Player. Each chooses a slot and harvests the 1 item shown. Place a net marker on each harvested slot. Repeat until all slots are taken or all Haenyeo have acted.
Note: If only 1 Haenyeo is in a zone, that player harvests ALL items. Note: If a slot shows 2 seafood items, collect both.
- Seafood: Mark the leftmost empty space on the matching seafood track on your Haenyeo sheet.
- Turtle egg: Draw a circle on the leftmost unmarked turtle egg space. When spending a turtle egg, mark its circle with an X to show it has been used.
- Trash: Mark the box for that trash type. If you already have that type, make no mark.
Zone 11 — Collect Pearls
Haenyeo in zone 11 collect pearls in turn order. Mark the leftmost empty space on the pearl track of your sheet.
- Bonuses on the pearl track are gained immediately: trash icon = gain 1 trash of your choice; ×2 = gain 2 seafood of your choice.
Important: Pearl points do NOT accumulate. Only the score at your rightmost marked space counts. Calculated at end of game only.
Pearl track: 15 · 30 (trash bonus) · 45 · 60 (×2 seafood) · 75 (trash bonus) · ... Pearl scoring: 5 pearls = 30 pts · 9+ pearls = 90 pts
④ Prepare Next Round
After all Haenyeo have acted:
- Retrieve your Haenyeo pawns and used diving cards.
- Remove the top card from each shallow/deep sea deck to reveal new cards for the next round.
- After rounds 3, 6, and 8: calculate scores. Different seafood scores each round — plan strategically! Record on your Haenyeo sheet.
IV. End of Game
The game ends after round 8. Calculate the following end-game bonus points:
- Turtle eggs: +1 point per unused turtle egg.
- Pearls: Score shown at your rightmost marked pearl space.
- Trash: Points based on number of different trash types collected (see score tile).
Add round 3/6/8 scores + bonus points = final score. Highest total wins. Tie: higher trash score wins. Still tied: share the victory!
Score example: Round 3: 35 + Round 6: 45 + Round 8: 78 + Turtle eggs: 2 + Trash: 55 + Pearls: 45 = 260 points
2-Player Rules
In a 2-player game, an NPC is added using one colour's 12 diving cards and 3 Haenyeo pawns.
- During Phase ② (Deploy Haenyeo), randomly draw 3 NPC diving cards and deploy NPC Haenyeo per the normal rules.
- In zones where the NPC has a Haenyeo, the NPC always acts first, harvesting from the leftmost available slot. Players then take turns.
- At the start of each new round, NPC's used cards are not reshuffled — draw 3 new cards from remaining unused NPC cards. After rounds 3 and 6, reshuffle all NPC diving cards.
Scoring Reference
Scores are calculated after rounds 3, 6, and 8. The score tile determines which seafood scores each round — check it carefully!
| Scoring Rule | Points |
|---|---|
| Conch shells collected | ×3 pts each |
| Abalone + sea urchin sets | ×6 pts per set |
| Sea mustard × abalone count | qty × qty pts |
| Most sea urchins collected | +15 pts (shared if tied) |
| Fewest conch + sea mustard sets | 15 pts (shared if tied) |
| Fewest octopus collected | 15 pts (shared if tied) |
| Sets of sea mustard + conch + abalone + octopus (1/2/3/4+) | 10/20/30/40 pts |
| Conch sets (2/4/6/8+ conch) | 5/10/15/25 pts |
Seafood: Conch · Abalone · Sea mustard · Sea urchin · Octopus.
Trash end-game score: 2 = 10 · 3 = 15 · 4 = 20 · 5 = 30 · 6 = 40 · 7 = 55 · 8 = 70 · 9+ = 90 pts
