Setup
-
Choose which matching Loyalty cards and Score Pile cards to use based on the number playing; use enough for the number of players plus one. Except:
- If playing with two, use four sets of Loyalty & Score cards. There will be 2 dummy piles.
- If playing with eight, use all eight sets. In this case there will be no dummy pile.
Set aside any extra Score Pile and Loyalty cards.
-
Randomly put the Score Pile cards face up, in a circle, so that they are accessible to all but not aligned to specific players.
-
Shuffle the Loyalty cards. Deal one facedown to each player. Return the extra card to the box unseen.
- Look at your Loyalty card but do not share it with other players. The Score card that matches is your secret score pile.
-
Shuffle all the Granny Wars cards and deal 10 facedown to each player. These are your hand cards.
- In games with two players, deal 15 cards each.
- With 7 or 8 players, deal everyone 8 cards.
Playing
The oldest player starts. On your turn, play any card from your hand onto any Score pile. Some Gold cards allow you to play two cards in one turn.
Play then passes clockwise until all players run out of cards.
Tit for Tat Bouncing
If the card you play covers up one with a number that is equal and opposite e.g. -2 on 2, or 4 on -4, then you must 'bounce' (move) the card you are covering to a different score pile of your choice.
There can be no more than one bounce per card played; so a bounced card cannot trigger a second bounce.
(The rulebook illustrates this with a "Lost" Glasses card showing -2 being covered by a New Glasses card showing 2, and the covered card being moved to another pile.)
Game Ends
When all hand cards are played out...
Players reveal their Loyalty and claim their score piles. The player with the highest score is the winner. There is no need to score the dummy pile(s). It is possible to win with a negative score. In the event of a tie, the player with the fewest cards is the winner.
Gold Cards
Gold cards can bounce or be bounced, according to their point value.
- Facedown cards can be affected by other cards but can not be revealed until scoring.
- New Hip & New Wheels: both players decide which card to swap. The second player can look at the card they are getting before deciding which one to trade.
- If your Sweet Old Lady steals a Gold card you must add it to a pile immediately, without using its powers.
- The extra card Nana Nap and Senior Moment allow you to play can be played on the same or different piles.
Scoring
(The printed Scoring section contains only a worked example, shown as an illustration with no written rules text. It reads: "You collected Positive cards totalling 14 and Negative cards totalling 13. Your score is 1.")
