- Gorilla cards: 27 cards
- Banana cards: 27 cards
Setup
- Form a deck of 36 cards composed of both Gorilla and Banana cards. For your first play, we recommend 16 Gorilla cards and 20 Banana cards.
- Shuffle the deck and place it face down next to you.
- Draw 7 cards from the deck. This constitutes your hand.
- You're ready to start the game.
Winning Condition
- If at the end of a turn, you have lined up at least 7 Gorillas on the Ground you win.
- If at the end of a turn you have no Gorilla on the Ground, you lose.
- During the 'Eating Phase', if you don't have enough Banana for all the Gorillas the group breaks apart and you lose.
- If you cannot draw a card when you need to because the deck has run out of cards, you lose.
Play Area
You will be arranging face up Gorilla cards and Banana cards in a pyramidal fashion. We will refer to the bottom most row as the Ground.
- You can only put Gorilla cards on the Ground. (If you're not on the Ground, you can put either a Gorilla card or a Banana card.)
Flow of the Game
The game plays in phases in the following order. Those 6 phases together form a turn, and you will repeat rounds until the end of the game.
| # | Phase name | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Awakening | Put back straight all sleeping Gorillas. |
| 2 | Draw | Draw one card and add it to your hand. On your first turn, don't draw. |
| 3 | Action | You can execute actions with the Gorillas placed on the area. Once a Gorilla has executed an action, it goes to sleep (rotate it on its side). Also, you can play from your hand 1 (only) Gorilla card in between actions whenever you want. |
| 4 | Eating | Eat as many Bananas as the number of Gorillas in the area. For this, you can either throw Banana cards from your hand, or eat collected imaginary Bananas. |
| 5 | Hand maintenance | Throw as many cards as required to get to a maximum of 7 cards. |
| 6 | End of Turn | If you have 7 Gorillas on the Ground, you can declare victory. If you do so, you win. |
Playing a Gorilla Card
Whenever you want during the 'Action Phase', you can 'play' a Gorilla card on the area. 'Play' refers to one of these actions:
- At first you can only place a Gorilla on the Ground.
- If there is already a Gorilla on the Ground, you can place another Gorilla on its right, next to it. (You cannot place a Gorilla on its left.) *1
- If there are two cards (Gorilla or Banana) you can place another card above. *2
- Gorillas are placed 'awake'.
Level
- The Gorillas on the Ground are Level 1.
- For each row above the Ground the Level of the Gorilla is increased by 1.
- The higher the Level of a Gorilla the more action he can take.
Actions
During the 'Action Phase' you can execute any action possible.
- Each action has a cost, represented for instance by (1) or (2)(1). In order to execute the action, you need to put to sleep Gorillas of at least this level.
- For instance, if the cost of an action is (3)(2), you need to put to sleep:
- one Level 3 Gorilla
- one Level 2 Gorilla
- There are also special costs, such as:
- Sacrifice n: Remove the most left Gorilla on the Ground, and resolve moving the cards in the upper rows as described below. Repeat n times.
- Combustion n: Remove from the game n cards from the discard pile.
Resolution of Collapse
When one of the basis cards for a card gets moved or removed from the game, resolve the cards as follows.
- When a card loses one of its basis cards, move it as if it was falling down to the empty space.
- If a Banana falls on the Ground, it is no good anymore and discarded.
Action List
| Name | Cost | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Walking | (1) | Declare either 'Gorilla' or 'Banana' and reveal the top card of the deck. If you guessed correctly, add the card to your hand. Otherwise, discard the card. |
| Exploration | (2) | +1 Draw * |
| Scapulimancy 1 | (1) | Look up the top card of the deck and place it back at the top or at the bottom of the deck. |
| Scapulimancy 3 | (3) | Look up the top 3 cards of the deck and place them back in any order at the top or at the bottom of the deck. |
| Invitation 1 | (2)(1) | +1 Gorilla * |
| Invitation 2 | (3)(2) | +2 Gorilla * |
| Cooking 2 | (2) | Discard 1 Banana card from your hand. Get +2 Bananas. * |
* Effect key:
- +n Draw: Draw n cards from the deck and add them to your hand.
- +n Gorilla: Play from your hand n Gorilla cards. Resolve immediately, you cannot postpone resolution.
- +n Banana: Get n imaginary bananas. You can eat the imaginary bananas, but they disappear at the end of the current turn.
Plant: A Banana card on the area who has for left or right neighbour a Gorilla card is a Plant. During the 'Eating Phase', you get +1 Banana per Plant.
Score Attack
When you win, the number of Gorillas on the Ground becomes your score.
Extra / Bonus Stage
You can also use the following 'Extreme Arts'. Let's do a great score!
| Name | Cost | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Wandering | (1) | Discard X cards from your hand. +X Draws. |
| Fleeing | (1) (1) (1) | Move 1 Gorilla to the next lower row where possible. |
| Swap | (4) | Swap the location of 1 Banana card and 1 Level 2+ Gorilla card. |
| Homesickness | (4) Sacrifice 2 Combustion 2 | Look up the top 3 cards of the deck and place them back in any order at the top or at the bottom of the deck. |
| Gorilla 5 | (5) | If you have in your hand 5 Gorilla or more, +5 Gorilla, +5 Banana. Remove all discarded cards from the game. (The source prints "+5 Gorilla _5 Banana"; read here as "+5 Gorilla, +5 Banana".) |
| Banastasia | (5) | End the Action Phase. If you win this turn, if there are 12 Banana cards or more among your hand, the area, and the discard pile, add the number of extra cards to your score. Example: If there are 18 Banana cards, you add 6 to your score. |
Clarification
- Even the Gorilla card you just played this turn can take action.
- To pay the cost of an action, the order is as follows: make a Gorilla sleep -> Sacrifice => Combustion.
- +n Gorilla: you only add as many Gorilla cards as you have up to n cards, ignore the extra if you don't have enough Gorilla cards.
- When using Scapulimancy 1 and Scapulimancy 3 and you don't have enough cards left in the deck, only resolve as many cards as you can. You don't lose from this.
