Goal

Grendizer XperienZ is a cooperative game in which players must thwart waves of invading Vega Forces. With the help of the Eagle Patrol and piloting Grendizer, destroy the MiniFOs and Saucer Beasts* that stand in your way before it's too late, and prevent Great King Vega from invading Earth!

*Saucer Beasts and Anteraks are combat vehicles used by Vega. Saucer Beasts are remotely controlled, while Anteraks are piloted by Vega fighters. They are collectively referred to as Saucer Beasts.

Description of Game Elements

Actions cards (x50) These cards allow players to perform actions such as moving Grendizer, attacking Vega Forces, or triggering positive Events.

Grendizer token (x1 or x2) Grendizer is represented by a token or a silhouette. It's up to you to choose which one you want to use.

Marqueur (x1) This token represents the Threat that increases over time. Danger side: (the grey Danger face of the token)

Saucer Beasts cards (x12) They describe the special powers of the Saucer Beasts that players will have to face. When a Saucer Beast enters the game, you must place a Hit Point (HP) marker in the leftmost space of the Saucer Beast's life bar.

Hit Points counters (x4) They are placed on the Saucer Beasts' cards and are used to count their Hit Points.

Event cards (x12) They are picked when the Threat marker reaches a space showing the Danger icon.

Saucer Beast tokens (x4) These counters represent Saucer Beasts. The zone symbol on each token corresponds to the Airspace zone through which they arrive (see INVASION PHASE, p.11).

MiniFO tokens (x36) These tokens represent the MiniFOs coming out of the Motherburn. The zone symbol on each token corresponds to the Airspace zone through which they arrive (see INVASION PHASE).

The game board (x1) and the Threat track (x1)

  1. Strategic Location, Makiba Ranch
  2. Strategic Location, Space Science Laboratory
  3. Strategic Location, Tokyo
  4. Strategic Location, Military Harbour
  5. Locations where Saucer Beasts cards are placed when they enter play.
  6. Boxes where Vega Forces appear when they enter play.
  7. The boxes above the arrows constitute the Airspace zone for each Strategic Location.
  8. The squares below the arrows constitute the Battlefield zone for each Strategic Location. A Strategic Location is also part of its Battlefield zone.
  9. The Threat track determines the difficulty of the game.
    • Easy: Threat side with 3 boxes.
    • Difficult: Threat side with 5 boxes.

Setup

End of the Game

The game ends when the fourth Saucer Beast is destroyed or when the Threat marker reaches the GAME OVER space on the Threat track.

In the first case, Earth is saved and Great King Vega is defeated! Until his next attack...

In the second case, the Eagle Patrol has failed... Earth is invaded!

Setup Steps

  1. Place the game board and the Threat track in the center of the table as shown in the image below.
  2. Place the Threat marker face up on its non-Danger side (the coloured face) in the bottom space of the Threat track (9).
  3. If you are playing with 3 or 4 players, place a MiniFO in the highest space (6) of each Airspace zone.
  4. For each Strategic Location, shuffle and place the Saucer Beast token and the remaining MiniFO tokens face up.
  5. Place Grendizer in the Space Science Laboratory (2) Strategic Location.
  6. Shuffle the Actions cards and form a deck, then:
    • with 1 or 2 players, each player draws 4 cards;
    • with 3 or 4 players, each player draws 3 cards.
  7. Shuffle the Saucer Beasts cards and form a deck.
  8. Shuffle the Events cards and form a deck.
  9. If one of the players comes from the planet Euphor, they play first. Otherwise, randomly determine who will be the first player.

Setup Example

Set up for 4 players, difficulty: Easy. The illustration shows the four MiniFO reserves (one per colour), the Saucer Beasts cards, the Events cards and the Actions cards decks, the Threat track and marker, the Grendizer token, the starting MiniFOs on the board (labelled "Starting MiniFOs, 3-4 players only"), and the starting hands for players #1 to #4.

Game Turn

Each player takes turns performing the following actions in this order:

Draw

  • The player draws an Actions card and places it face up next to the deck.

Invasion Phase

  • Depending on the Actions card revealed, the player moves Vega Forces, then draws MiniFO tokens and places them on the game board.

Threat Phase

  • The player moves the Threat marker up one space for each Saucer Beast and each group of MiniFOs present in a Strategic Location.
  • If the Threat marker is on its Danger side, the player draws an Event card, flips the Threat marker back to its non-Danger side, and then applies the effect of the Event card.

Action Phase

  • The player takes the revealed Actions card and adds it to their hand.

Moving Grendizer

  • If the player wishes, they may move Grendizer to any Airspace or Battlefield zone adjacent to the one where it is currently located. This is also when they may play a Grendizer Movement card to move it to any zone.

Invasion Phase

During the Invasion Phase, the player must perform the following actions in this order:

  • Move all Vega Forces in the Airspace and Strategic Location zones indicated by the zone symbols on the drawn card one space down.
  • They then draw one MiniFO of each colour from the zone symbols on the drawn card, reveal them, and place them in the first spaces (6) of the two Airspace zones.
  • If they reveal a Saucer Beast token, they draw a Saucer Beast card and place it in the designated space (5) after returning any MiniFOs found there to the Reserve (see p.13 THE THREAT). Finally, they place 1 Hit Point marker in the leftmost space of the Saucer Beast's life bar.
  • If both symbols are the no-entry symbol (the grey icon), this means that all Vega Forces move one space down and no MiniFOs enter the game.

The printed page shows two example annotations of these symbol combinations:

  • Move all Vega Forces present in the two indicated Airspace zones (marked by the zone symbols) and then place a MiniFO in the first space of each indicated Airspace zone.
  • Move all Vega Forces in Airspace zones one space down. No MiniFO enters play.

Additional rules for the Invasion Phase:

  • The presence of Grendizer in a zone does not prevent Vega Forces from moving there.
  • If there are no more MiniFOs in the Reserve because they are all in play, the player does not bring in any new ones.
  • There is no limit to the number of Vega Forces tokens that can be present in a space.

The Threat

The player moves the Threat marker up one space for each Golgoth and each group of Shuttles (regardless of the number of Shuttles in the group) present in a Strategic Location.

  • Saucer Beasts remain in the Strategic Locations where they are located.
  • MiniFOs are placed in their Reserve or in the space reserved for the Saucer Beasts card if it has not yet entered play.
  • As soon as the Threat marker reaches a Danger-icon space, it is turned over to its Danger side.

Then, if the Threat marker is on its Danger side, the player draws an Event card, turns the Threat marker back to its non-Danger side, and applies the effect of the Event card.

  • Some Event cards may cause the player to move the Threat marker again. If it reaches a Danger-icon space, it is turned back to its Danger side and a new Event card is drawn.

As soon as the Threat marker reaches the top space of the Threat track (GAME OVER), the players immediately lose the game.

Actions Cards

The Actions cards are used to attack Vega Forces, to move Grendizer or to trigger positive Events. The printed page shows the following example cards:

  • Positive event: Dr. Genzo Umon. "The Threat is reduced by 1. The Threat cannot fall below 1."
  • Attack of the Eagle Patrol: Double Spazer. "This attack causes a Saucer Beast to lose 1 HP OR destroys 3 MiniFOs, starting with the one closest to the Military Harbour."
  • Attack on the Earth Defense: Earth Defense. "This attack can be performed in any Battlefield zone. It causes a Saucer Beast to lose 1 HP OR destroys 2 MiniFOs."
  • Grendizer movement: Marine Spazer Go! "During the Grendizer Movement phase, you may play this card. Place Grendizer in any zone."
  • Attack of Grendizer: Screw Crusher. "This attack is made in the zone where Grendizer is located. This attack causes a Saucer Beast to lose 2 HPs OR destroys 1 MiniFO."

Two further example cards appear in the Invasion Phase illustrations:

  • Anti-Gravity Storm (Attack of Grendizer). "This attack is made in the zone where Grendizer is located. This attack causes a Saucer Beast to lose 1 HP AND pushes it one space upward."
  • Earth Defense. "This attack can be performed in any Battlefield zone. It causes a Saucer Beast to lose 1 HP OR destroys 2 MiniFOs."

Rules for Actions cards:

  • Eagle Patrol Attack cards only affect Vega Forces present in the Airspace and Battlefield zones indicated by the text and colour of the card.
  • Grendizer Attack cards only affect Vega Forces present in the same zone as him.
  • Earth Defense Attack cards only affect Vega Forces present in the Battlefield zones.
  • When there are no more Actions cards in the deck, shuffle the discard pile and form a new deck.

Apply Attack Damage

  • When a MiniFO is destroyed, it is placed in its Reserve or in the space reserved for the Saucer Beast card if it has not yet entered play.
  • When a Saucer Beast loses one or more HP, move the HP marker the same number of spaces to the right.
  • When the HP marker reaches the destruction symbol (the explosion), the Saucer Beast is destroyed, its token is removed from the game, and its card is turned over.
  • If the destruction symbol is associated with -1, the Threat marker is moved down one space. Do not turn it over onto its Danger face if it reaches a Danger-icon square.
  • Vega Forces cannot be pushed back beyond the first space (6) of the Airspace zone.

Moving Grendizer

Moving Grendizer is optional:

  • you can move Grendizer to an adjacent zone without using a card, or
  • you can move Grendizer to any zone using a Grendizer Movement card.

When a player moves Grendizer without the help of a Grendizer Movement card, they can move it to an adjacent zone. When a player plays a Grendizer Movement card, they can place Grendizer in any Airspace or Battlefield zone.

Notes on This Transcription

  • The PDF is watermarked "WIP" on every page. The text above is transcribed as printed.
  • The board labels on the printed page read "Strategique location" (a French spelling); they are written here as Strategic Location, the term used throughout the rules.
  • The Marqueur token label is printed in French; it is kept as printed.
  • The Threat section (p.11) refers to "each Golgoth" and "each group of Shuttles", while the Game Turn section (p.9) and the reference sheet refer to Saucer Beasts and MiniFOs. Both are transcribed as printed.
  • Cross-references are transcribed as printed: the Saucer Beast token entry points to INVASION PHASE on p.11 and the Invasion Phase entry points to THE THREAT on p.13, although those sections are on pp.10 and 11 respectively.
  • The Action Phase on p.9 says the player takes the revealed Actions card and adds it to their hand; the reference sheet also says the player may play an Actions card of their choice. Both are transcribed as printed.
  • Grendizer movement wording differs slightly: p.9 and the reference sheet say Airspace or Battlefield zones, while p.13 says any zone when a Grendizer Movement card is used. All are transcribed as printed.
  • The zone symbols and card-face icons on the component and card illustrations overlap and are partly illegible in the PDF; they are described above by function rather than reproduced glyph by glyph. Event and Saucer Beast card powers are printed on the cards themselves and are not part of the rulebook text.
  • The credits and designer pages were omitted.
