Gold Hunting Rulebook

Table of Contents
Components
- 1 rulebook / 1 screen (가림막)
- 8 single gold pieces (1-piece gold)
- 8 double gold pieces (2-piece gold)
- 4 triple gold pieces (3-piece gold)
- 3 Goldrush markers
Note: the 3 Goldrush markers are each marked with one of the numbers 1, 2, and 3.
Setup
-
Shuffle the 3 Goldrush markers face-down and deal one to each player. Check the number on the front side so that your opponent cannot see it, then place the marker in front of you face-down.
-
Each player takes the following gold pieces: 4 single gold pieces, 4 double gold pieces, and 2 triple gold pieces.
-
Sit facing each other and place the screen between the two players. Without letting your opponent see, divide your gold pieces into 4 piles as you wish and stack them. These piles are called "gold veins" (금맥). Place the gold veins about 2 cm apart.

-
Once both players have finished, move the screen to one side.
Game Play
-
Decide the starting player by any method you like. Starting with the starting player, players take turns in alternation, one turn each.
-
On your turn, declare one of "3", "2", or "1", then choose one of your opponent's gold veins and lift the top gold piece from it.
You must lift the top piece of the vein!
- Success: If the number you declared matches the number of gold pieces you lifted, you succeed in mining. Take the lifted gold pieces and place them in front of you, keeping them separate from your own gold vein.
- Failure: If the number you declared differs from the number of gold pieces you lifted, you fail. The lifted gold pieces are removed from the game and returned to the box.
-
If you succeed, you may keep trying to mine gold. Stack all gold you have mined so far into a single pile.
Diagram captions: "Success!" "2" (declared 2, lifted 2).
-
Careful not to "go bankrupt": Once you have 2 or more gold pieces, you are at risk of going "bankrupt." If you fail at mining and the number of gold pieces you lifted is less than the number of gold pieces you have already collected, you lose all gold pieces you have collected so far (they are returned to the box). Instead, you may take the gold pieces you lifted this turn.
Diagram captions: "Failure!" "All gold pieces collected so far (5) are returned to the box." "Instead, take the gold pieces lifted this turn."
Example: You have collected 5 gold pieces so far and declare "3" on this turn. However, the gold pieces you lifted this turn are a 2-piece, so you fail to mine. All 5 gold pieces you have collected so far are returned to the box. However, you may take the 2-piece gold you lifted this turn.
Goldrush
-
Each player may attempt a Goldrush once during the game.
-
At the start of your turn, reveal the number on your Goldrush marker and declare that number. Then lift gold pieces from your opponent's gold vein.
-
If you succeed: place your Goldrush marker face-up in front of you. A face-up Goldrush marker counts as a 2-piece gold at the end of the game.
-
If you fail: return the Goldrush marker to the box together with the gold pieces you lifted.
-
Regardless of success or failure, the turn ends as is.

Storing Gold ("보관")
- Instead of a Goldrush, you may choose to store your gold (금 보관).
- At the start of your turn, declare "store" (보관). Return your Goldrush marker to the game box, and set aside all gold pieces you have collected so far to one side.
- Gold set aside this way is in the "stored state" (보관 상태). It is not lost until the end of the game. However, stored gold scores only half points (rounding down).
- When you declare "store," proceed with the turn in the same way. If you succeed at mining, the gold piece you mined forms a new pile.
Additional Rules
- If the composition of your gold vein is revealed because of your opponent's mistake, immediately stop the game, take the screen back and place it again, then recreate your gold vein with the gold pieces that remain.
Game End
- The game ends if no gold pieces remain in the gold veins of both players.
Scoring
- Count each gold piece you collected as 1 point per piece (e.g., a 2-piece plus a 3-piece = 5 points).
- Stored gold pieces score only half points (e.g., 5 stored gold pieces = 2 points).
- If you succeeded at a Goldrush, add 2 points for the Goldrush.
- Calculate each player's total score. The player with the higher score wins.
Tie-Breakers
- If the scores are tied, the player who collected more 3-piece gold wins.
- If still tied, the player who collected more 2-piece gold wins.
- If still tied, the game is a draw.
